I thought I would let The List know of the status of my search for Francis Lovelock of Hungerford Newtown ( 1751 - 1834 ). My visit to Hungerford and Avington Church on Saturday 13th April was not particularly fruitful. The Local Library has a limited Local History collection and there is no evidence of any Lovelock graves or monuments at the delightful Norman Church of St Mary & St Luke in Avington. Hungerford Historical Association have sent me details on the history of Avington Manor and there is no reference to Lovelocks. Lady Howard Dewalden also has no knowledge of any Lovelock link. In Lovelocks in Berkshire on the Lovelock Web Site ( Hungerford PCC Wills ) there is reference to Francis Lovelock's father Edward and his Will dated 1780 which refers to his Freehold and Leased Property in Chipping Lambourne, Hidden ( possibly Hidden Farm ), West Shefford and Avington. Does anyone know where this Will can be seen? ( Berkshire Record Office do not appear to have a copy ). West Shefford is about 1 mile north of Lovelocks House and there is a possibility that Francis was buried here. Lovelocks House is now in Shefford Parish - the Parish Boundary changed after the M4 Motorway was built. Francis had an older sister Elizabeth ( of Avington ) and her Will dated 1785 ( again referenced under Hungerford ) refers to Francis. Avington was a Parish in its own right so it could be that Francis lived somewhere in this area. Does anyone on the Lovelock List have a copy of the Avington or Shefford Parish Registers on Microfiche? If so I would be grateful if you could check for any references to Francis - in particular his Burial. Did he marry? Were there any children from this Marriage? I am visiting Lovelocks House in June and would love to be able to explain to Major Hanbury why he has a carving in his Drawing Room dedicated to Francis Lovelock. Any assistance from Lovelock Listers would therefore be gratefully received.
