As it happened, I was able to visit the Record Office at Trowbridge late yesterday, wherein the temperature under that metal roof must have been approaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and check out a few records. I checked the Baptisms for Malmesbury (the Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul) from 7 June 1838 to 27 April 1879 and found NO LOVELOCK entries. On the off-chance that Sian's great-grandfather-in-law haled from around Malmesbury rather than in it I also checked the following for LOVELOCK Baptisms, and again found NO entries: Easton Grey : 11 Aug 1850 to 01 May 1892 Great Somerford : 27 Jan 1867 to 06 Jun 1880 Little Somerford: 31 Mar 1861 to 23 Sep 1877 Hullavington : 05 Feb 1860 to 21 Sep 1879 Westport St Mary : 06 Oct 1867 to 04 May 1873 Charlton St Peter : 07 Jan 1869 to 28 Oct 1888 Stanton St Quintin : 02 Aug 1869 to 29 Mar 1883 James - you may wish to add the above to the "No findings" part of the Wiltshire Sources Page? I wonder where to suggest Sian might look next? I cannot find any information about his birth or marriage to Eliza Jane Tillman. He ended up living in Merton Surrey at least from 1930 onwards. He died in Surbiton Surrey on 28th Dec 1943. He had 4 children the eldest Frederick William, my husbands grandfather, was born in Streatham nearby to Merton. Rumour has it that Frederick John's father was born in Malmesbury as well. He had a brother Charles who was a dairy farmer in the 1930s living in Earley outside Reading. Frederick John was a builder. Any informantion would be most appreciated.Thank you. Well done Graham!! What tenacity in that heat!! I guess the family 'rumour' re Malmesbury was not correct. But the negative searches are still a useful addition to our knowledge. I think Sian will really have to try and locate the marriage certificate of Frederick John Lovelock and Eliza Jane Tillman. Since Frederick William is the eldest, it would be logical to start looking at the GRO indexes from the date of his birth and work backwards. Hopefully they had their first born within a few years of their marriage. To save the cost of obtaining too many certificates, once she finds a likely marriage, she can check the volume and folio numbers for the same year and quarter for Elizabeth Jane Tillman. If they match, there's an excellent change that she's found the right marriage. Then she can order the certificate. That's what I'd do anyway. What do the rest of you think?
