Hello All This is not a Lovelock family history issue as such, but it may well be relevant to other Lovelock researchers, especially those who use the Lovelock website so magnificently maintained for us by James. I've hit a problem accessing some of the PDF files on the Lovelock website since recently installing the latest version of Adobe Reader (version 7.0) - I was previously using version 5.1. The files I'm immediately concerned with - there may of course be others - are the two most recent updates of the Lieflock line (those in PDF form, as I said; html versions are fine). The same problem arises whether trying to open the file on the site (only the latest - Aug 2004? - version of course) or a copy stored on my PC (both the August and June 2004 updates). The Reader opens, displays the correct number of pages, but all 'pages' remain blank - i.e. no content appears. The downloaded versions open perfectly in version 5.1 of the Reader, which thankfully I didn't uninstall! Also, an earlier update of the Lieflock tree which I have (2003?) opens in the latest Adobe Reader, as do other old and new PDF files from the website - including the annotated version of the Wroughton/Tidcombe tree and the on-line version of 'Lovelock Lines' No. 2, both posted on the website only in the last few days. I checked the properties of the various downloaded files I've referred to above and what might provide a key is that they were created using quite a variety of pieces of software. The problematic ones share a common origin in this sense, having been created using 'VideoSoft PDF Generator 1.0'. The recent posts pasted in below come from an Adobe users forum and seem to endorse this; moreover, one of them also points to Legacy, which I know is the genealogy programme James uses. It seems to me this could also explain why some of the PDF files on-site are OK and others not - my assumption being that the Lieflock tree will have been generated from Legacy but other PDF files on site will not. I'm out of my depth here, but presumably various software applications build in and make use of various tools to do things like create PDF files. There don't seem to be any 'answers' forthcoming from the Adobe site as yet - I'm checking back regularly and will post here anything which emerges. The 'contact Videosoft' proposal (see below) is all very well, but in my/our(?) case just now it may be that Legacy is the 'target'. I guess I'm 'unavoidably' bouncing this to James ("Sorry!") for possible 'solutions' or 'workarounds', short-term or otherwise - over-and-above, in my case, using version 5.1 of the Reader to read downloaded versions. But if anybody else has hit these problems and/or has relevant expertise with a view to overcoming them, your comments would be much appreciated. Is there perhaps some parallel - and thus a clue - in your updating your copy of Legacy to my updating the Adobe Reader James, so that e.g. Lieflock line update PDFs earlier than June 2004 might have been created in a different way from current ones? Best wishes - and a belated Happy New Year - to everyone From a sunny Southampton Robin The following are from Adobe User-to-User Forums (edited and also changed from HTML format - harder to read without the formatting, but avoids falling foul of RootsWeb blocks):- Blank PDFs in Reader 7 (OK in 5/6) Rodney Mitchell - 06:47am Jan 4, 2005 Pacific I have a number of PDF files that appear blank in reader 7.0.0 (on Windows XP Sp2) but used to display fine in reader 6 on the same machine. In 7 the correct number of pages are visible, but they are all blank. No error messages or clues to the problem are given. Most PDF appear as normal. The problem PDFs all have the creator reported as: VideoSoft PDF Generator 1.0 PDF Version: 1.2 (Acrobat 3.x) The only fonts used are Arial and Arial Bold Are there settings in reader 7 that need to be changed or can reader 7 just not show these files? _____ Larry D. Wilson - 12:05pm Jan 6, 05 PST (#1 of 7) I get the exact same problem (pdf pages are blank using Reader 7.0). I think I discovered it a day later. My pdf files were generated by the Legacy DeLuxe genealogy program. I believe they also use the Videosoft pdf generator. Other pdf's read fine and these files used to read fine using Adobe Reader 6.02 so Adobe must have programmed something in to its new software to cause this problem. _______ Terence Muir - 4:58am Jan 12, 05 PST (#6 of 7) I also have the same problem as Rodney and Larry above. Some PDF files which I was able to view OK with Adobe Reader 6(6.01/6.0.2)now show only blank pages since I installed Adobe Reader 7.0. It seems to be only those PDF files which have been created with VideoSoft PDF Generator. No security has been applied to them. Is there some setting under Preferences which should be change? Or some other solution? ______________ Aandi Inston - 5:47am Jan 12, 05 PST (#7 of 7) Blank PDFs in Reader 7 (OK in 5/6) You should probably contact VideoSoft. Aandi Inston
