Hi John Have given a bit more thought to James' movement. As you say, we know he was in Stoke Talmage in 1851 and not listed in the Oxfordshire Directory in Talmage for 1847. [I'm not sure that that necessarily means he was not living there at the time though. I don't think listing in the Directory at that time was by any means automatic. Not like phone directories today. According to Mark Herber, 'Ancestral Trails', 'only about 6 per cent of the population of the area covered by the directory (was listed in the early 19th century, mostly) wealthier or otherwise notable citizens'. As the 19th century progressed, directories became more comprehensive in the coverage of businesses and began to include private citizens .... (p 133) ] We also know from the baptism entries of his children that he was a butcher in Watlington between 1814 and 1817. However, we haven't found the baptism of his last son Charles. In fact we haven't found Charles' marriage or where he died either. Neither he nor his wife doesn't appear in the 1881 census so presumeably died before 1881. However, I note that John Talbot in his correspondence with you 8.11.00 has a death of an Annis Lovelock 2.11.1877 of this parish. (I assume that means Watlington.) I did not place this death before but it looks like it would be Annis the wife of Charles Lovelock. I went looking for Charles and Annis Lovelock's daughter in the 1881 but could not find her. Presumeably she married before then. However, I did find this interesting entry: Dwelling: No 36 Corn Market Leopold Arms Census Place: Oxford St Michael, Oxford, England Source: FHL Film 1341363 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 1502 Folio 58 Page 7 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Charles LOVELOCK M 49 M Wallingford, Berkshire, England Rel: Head Occ: Inn Keeper Emma LOVELOCK M 47 F Abingdon, Berkshire, England Rel: Wife Mary LOVELOCK U 22 F Watlington, Oxford, England Rel: Daur Occ: Inn Keepers Daughter Juley LOVELOCK U 11 m F Watlington, Oxford, England Rel: Daur Elizabeth NUTT M 59 F Telsworth Or Tetsworth, Oxford, England Rel: Serv Occ: Cook (D S) Who was this Charles born abt 1832 in Wallingford? It has to be Charles Gibbs Lovelock I think. Amazing difference in age between the two daughters. One would suspect there were other children in between. And while I was looking at the 1881, I had a look for James bn 1852 Watlington s. of George and Ann Squires Gordge. I found: Dwelling: 17 Oxford Cottages Oxford Rd Butchers Shop Census Place: Tilehurst, Berkshire, England Source: FHL Film 1341315 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 1299 Folio 86 Page 29 Marr Age Sex Birthplace James LOVELOCK U 26 M Watlington, Oxford, England Rel: Head Occ: Butcher George GOOWELL U 18 M Hurst, Berkshire, England Rel: Servant Occ: Butcher Now this is almost certainly the same James, although the year is a little out. However, I have this James married to a Phoebe with a son James bn 1870. This would appear to be incorrect. The source for the birth of James in 1870 is the 1881 census but he is shown there as living with his grandparents George L. & Ann Squires (Gordge). Frederick Charles L. bn 1861 is too young to be his father. So that only leaves George William L. There is no sign of Frederick Charles bn 1861 in the 1881 census. Chances are that he died before then. I had no trouble finding George William L. though as follows: Dwelling: 201 Southampton St Census Place: Reading St Giles, Berkshire, England Source: FHL Film 1341317 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 1307 Folio 91 Page 3 Marr Age Sex Birthplace George W. Perhaps James L bn abt 1870 was a son of George William L. and was off staying with his grandparents on census night. We really need to find the marriage of George William L. and Mary A. but that might well be in Stafford or even London, since James was born there. The baptism of James L would be even more difficult to find! I also checked for Ellen Webb Stone nee Lovelock since I have her marrying Robert Stone in 1878. I believe this is her: Dwelling: 31 Vachel Rd Census Place: Reading St Lawrence, Berkshire, England Source: FHL Film 1341317 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 1305 Folio 16 Page 25 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Robert STONE M 26 M Winkfield, Berkshire, England Rel: Head Occ: Carpenter Ellen W.
