Hello everyone, My name is Sally Kirby-Baker,I live in Mission B.C. Canada.I was born in West Burton,Nottingham and emigrated to Canada when I was four.I have probably already written to some of you in my quest for Lovelocks. My great grandmother was Ellen Lovelock, born September 13,1868 in Vernham's Dean to parents,William Lovelock and Elizabeth (Betsey) Ball.My line follows a similar route to Graham's at the Lovelock web-site only I am descended from John Lovelock's second wife Elizabeth O'Briant. If anyone knows anything about Elizabeth I'm at a dead end there.I'm pleased to find such a list and hope to be able to add my two cents worth when possible. Kindest regards from a very sunny B.C. Sally __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Auctions - Buy the things you want at great prices! http://auctions.yahoo.com/
Hello all, Following Robert's message of 15 Jan, I've now updated the Lovelock Web pages to include a "sanitised" version of Robert's latest Oxfordshire Lovelocks file. The page is accessible form the section: Sources-> Oxfordshire or from the "What's New" page. As usual, the "sanitising" consisted of removing entries for individuals who are potentially still alive - births after 1900 and marriages after 1920. In fact, there were only a few such entries. If you want the uncensored version just let me know and I'll send it by email. Regards, James
Hi all Finally completed extracting all Lovelocks from the wonderful series of microfiche of transcriptions of parish registers in Oxfordshire by the Oxfordshire FHS. Took me four day in all. Have forwarded the updated and completed version to James. As usual, if you want the complete file, email me separately as I can't use attachments on the list. James Lovelock & Sarah Elizabeth is the daughter of James Lovelock and Sarah Wright on the Reading Lovelock line. This baptism was provided by cousin Gwen but I missed it last time. However, for the same marriage, I could not locate (at least in Watlington) the baptism of Charles Lovelock abt 1818 s. James Lovelock and Sarah, butcher. Gwen has him born at Watlington. Happy New Year to you all. As some of you will know, I'm off to England and Europe for a holiday on Jan 22 of this month. So hopefully will get stuck into some family history research while I'm over there. Should be away several months. However, will be keeping my existing email address while travelling. Will stay in touch. Cheers Robert --------------------------------- Lovelock family history web pages http://www.ri.silicomp.fr/~loveluck/genealogy/lovelock
Hello Jim, and a Happy New Year to you and Noreen, and to all the Lovelock list members! Hannah Maria's Lovelock line can be traced right back to Richard Lieflock (? - 1760). However, I'm afraid I don't have any further information about the Swatton line at the moment. Best wishes, James
Happy New Year everyone from snowy & cold , Ontario,Canada. My g g grandmother was Hannah Maria Lovelock, Born 17 March, 1841. She married William Swatton in 1861. By any chance would anyone else have any interest in the Swatton name or know of anyone that is presently researching the Swatton line. There are a lot of them. I would be interested in hearing from them. Regards Jim
Hello all, I've updated the Web page concerning distriobution of Lovelocks from the 1881 census, to include a map illustrating which counties were populated with Lovelocks and to what extent. You'll find a link to the map on the "Lovelock distribution" page listed in the main "Lovelock Genealogy" section. The direct link to the map is: http://www.ri.silicomp.fr/~loveluck/genealogy/lovelock/documents/map-lovelock-distribution.html Regards, James
Hello all, Last weekend I looked at all the Lovelock entries on the LDS 1881 CD-ROM and produced some statistics concerning the geographic distribution of Lovelock births and census returns. I've included the results (in the form of tables and a chart) on a new Web page which you'll find in the first section (Lovelock Genealogy) of the Lovelock Web pages. There's also a pointer to it on the "What's New" page. Coming soon (perhaps!): I'm working on a UK counties map with different colours according to the number of Lovelock entries! It would be interesting to have results earlier in time, where the PRs indicate that there was a much bigger concentration of Lovelocks in Wiltshire and neighbouring counties. Note that the IGI results don't really reflect the 1881 Lovelock distribution, which is probably confirmation of the fact that IGI data is very partial (in particular there seems to be only one IGI entry for London!). Regards, James
If it's a matter of who says Aye, I say Aye. Compliments of the impending (if you ignore the displays in all the supermarkets now entering on their fourth month) season to all. Hello all, This is just to let you know that I've updated the Lovelock web pages to include the latest versions of Robert's PR collections for Berkshire and Oxfordshire, which he described in his email message of 6 November. Regards, James
Robert, and everyone else! Not sure if I really qualify as a sleuth, but offer the following as a response to Robert's challenge regarding William Oliver Lovelock's great-grandparents. I agree with Robert that John L and Elizabeth Hancock who married in Burbage in 1777 are not really credible candidates. So are there any real clues to alternatives? I think so. a. Wootton Rivers Census Returns give us: 1841 - Elizabeth Lovelock aged 50 1851 - Elizabeth Lovelock aged 61 born in Burbage 1861 - I have not found her 1871 - Elizabeth Lovelock aged 84 born Wootton Rivers b. The Wootton Rivers Burial Register records Elizabeth's burial on 21 September 1872 aged 85. c. The Preshute Marriage Register records the marriage of John Lovelock and Betty Hillier, both of Savernaque Park, on 10 August 1813. d. The Burbage Baptism Register records the baptism of Betty Hilliard, the daughter of John and Olive on 11 May 1788, and the baptism of Betty Hilliard the daughter of John and Mary on 2 January 1791. Further argument for the defence: a. Elizabeth was a lodger in the Jordan household in 1851 and would therefore, presumably, have been consulted about her place of birth. I suggest Burbage would be her personal declaration. b. In 1871 Elizabeth was living with her daughter Harriett and son-in-law George Smart who may well have answered on her behalf. In any case Wootton Rivers was given as the birthplace for the whole family. c. Why Preshute? Well, why not? It is no further from Savernaque Park to Preshute than it is to Burbage. The two could well have been in service in the Park, and Preshute was a popular place for marriages for reasons I've not yet seen explained. Remember that Richard Lieflock, who in my case started all this, married Mary Head at Preshute in 1706, yet they both lived in Easton and Easton certainly had an incumbent at the time. Oh, and as Robert said, I could find no other John L/Elizabeth marriage at about the right time anywhere else! d. In the Burbage Records the names Hillier and Hilliard are often interchangeable. If the Burbage origin is true, but Betty Hillier is the wrong girl the Burbage records provide seven other possibles baptised between 1786 and 1790. Since this all started from Robert's record of the marriage of William Oliver on 2 August 1915 which included the information that he was a widower, you may wish to note that the GRO records include the marriage of a William O Lovelock in the January-March quarter of 1900 in the Pewsey RD, which covered Wootton Rivers. The only likely-to-be-relevant death I have recorded from the GRO records is that of a Sarah Lovelock aged 32 in the January-March quarter of 1909 also in the Pewsey RD. Question: do I gather from the fact that the Watchfield marriage entry records no place of residence for William Oliver's second wife Anna that she was "of this parish"? If so, isn't it interesting that William's brother Alfred John also married a Pocock, Florence Ethel, whose father was, like Anna's, named David, but that the marriage took place in Wootton Rivers where both Alfred and Florence resided? So, does this constitute sleuthing or the scattering of red herrings? Can I take this opportunity to open up an issue that has frustrated me for years? Does anybody have any idea what happened to the nine children of John Lovelock and Jane Choules who married at Great Bedwyn on 28 February 1837? I can track one or more of them in the 1841 - 1871 Census Returns, but have no idea if any of them married. There are two possible marriages in the Hungerford RD but I know not in which village or town, and one possible death also in the Hungerford RD. I am amazed that after 12 years I have still not come across anybody who can trace a descent from one of the nine. Why the particular interest? Because John was one of my great-grandfathers. Hi all Have been down to Society of Australian Genealogists again - checking all those wonderful fiche of PRs in Oxfordshire. As you will all be aware, some of the Oxfordshire parishes were previously in Berkshire - prior to the county reorganisation. For consistency, I attribute all the parishes to the ancient parish boundaries. As usual, I will send the updated county parish files to James, as I can't send the attachment through this list. However, if you would like the updated copy of the entire PR for the updated counties of Oxfordshire and Berkshire, email me individually and I will send it separately - preferably in 'zipped' (compressed) format as they are now getting quite large. Here's the new material I found. I am now about half way through the Oxfordshire fiche. Wantage Marriages 1538-1653 (Modern Transcript) 1592 Oct 23 William Lovelock and Margery Adams 1616 Oct 20 William Lovelock and Katheren Leeke Wantage, Berkshire Burials 1542-1653 (Modern Transcript) 1615 Dec 31 Margery Lovelock 1617 Aug 3 Katherine Lovelock 1625/26 Jan 9 William Lovelocke 1641/42 Mar 11 Katherine Lovelocke, vidua [widow] Warborough [St Laurence], Oxfordfordshire Marriages 1538-1974 1810 Sep 24 William Lovelock, St Mary Wallingford and Kitty Cherrill, Dorchester. By Licence. Witnesses: Vincent Cherrill, Mary Lovelock *Note: This marriage is on my own (and of course Gwen Eastment's) direct line and we already had the detail although I did not have a source. William Lovelock was born in 1786, the son of John Lovelock (The Elder) and Mary Whitwick. Watchfield, Berkshire Marriages 1858-1958 1915 Aug 2 William Oliver Lovelock, 39, widower, carpenter, Milton Lilbourne, son of George Lovelock, Smith and Anna Isabel Pocock, 33, spinster, daughter of David Pocock, Builder, Witnesses: David Pocock, Eliza Taylor, Kaye Berrett *Note. William Oliver Lovelock was almost certainly baptised: 1875 Apr 18 William Oliver son of George & Harriet Lovelock, Abode: Wootton Rivers, Blacksmith The marriage of his parents we already have at Wootton Rivers: 1872 Mar 9 George Lovelock, Father David & Harriet Ruddle Father: William. Witnesses John William Lovelock and Sarah Lovelock I believe George Loveock in turn was born at Wootton Rivers: 1846 Jun 7 George son of David & Harriet Lovelock, Abode: Wootton Rivers, Mason His brother John William was born at Wootton Rivers in 1845 and sister Matilda in 1848. David's marriage at Wootton Rivers is almost certainly: 1841 Oct 14 David Lovelock Father: John & Harriet Ruddell Father: George. Wit: James Lovelock, James Porton David in turn was very likely the David also baptised at Wootton Rivers: 1814 Sep 4 David son of John & Elizabeth Lovelock, Abode: Wootton Rivers, Brick-Layer His brother James was born at Wootton Rivers in 1830. I cannot locate a suitable marriage for a John Lovelock to an Elizabeth about 1814. There is a marriage in 1777 of a John Lovelock (from Wootton Rivers) to an Elizabeth in Burbage but the marriage is really too early for the same Elizabeth to be still producing children in 1830. I rather think their children are the ones baptised in Wootton Rivers between 1778 and 1797. So ok you Lovelock sleuths. Let's see what you can do with it!! There's a challenge! Now to continue the PR extractions. Watlington, Oxfordshire Baptisms 1635-1842 (Modern Transcript) 1811 Jan 29 Sarah d. James Lovelock & Sarah 1812 Apr 3 John Tho: s. That means William L. was born abt 1811 and was therefore not William George L. bn 1786. So who was William L bn abt 1811, grocer and draper? The most likely match is in Wallingford St Mary Le More, Berkshire (Wallingford is on the border of Oxfordshire): 1810 Dec 25 LOVELOCK William s. William and Catharine. William senior was a 'victualler" and was baptising several children in Wallingford from 1810. Almost certainly William and Catherine are William George Lovelock and Catherine Cherril who married in Warborough, Oxfordshire in 1810! Catherine (or 'Kitty') Lovelock was buried at Wallingford in 1824. William L. remarried a Hannah Gibb in 1829 and had at least two more children to her. Gwen Eastment has only one offspring of William Lovelock and Kitty Cherrill: James L. bn 8th April, 1820 at Henley on Thames, Berkshire. This is of course not consistent with the baptism of James L. s. William L. and Catherine in the Berkshire PR: James is shown as baptised 1818 Jan 18 at Wallingford. I will need to get Gwen to try and check her source. Now continuing with the extractions from Oxfordshire PRs: Stoke Talmage Baptisms 1670, 1721-1900 (Modern Transcript) 1852 Oct 17 James s. Hello, I have learned from Robert Sterry that his cousin Gwen Eastment (nee Lovelock) will celebrate her 90th birthday on 21 December. I'm pretty sure that there are several folks on this list who have benefited, either directly or indirectly, from Gwen's amazing collection of information on the Lovelock family history, which she is always willing to share with others. I think it would be fitting if we were were put together a Web page of tributes to Gwen's contribution to genealogy in general and the Lovelock family history in particular. I'm sure Robert could be persuaded to present this to her in some appropriate way. Please let me know if you are willing to contribute to a "Gwen's 90th birthday Genealogy Page". Regards, James
Dear All Looking at the Baptism Records from East Challow in Berkshire provided by Helen Norton I notice Daniel and Reuben Lovelock on 17 August 1845 and 3 December 1847 respectively, recorded as the sons of Charles and Susannah. Does anyone have easy access to the 1851 Census Return for East Challow? Is this Charles the son of Thomas and Sarah (nee DUDMAN) baptised at Great Bedwyn on 28 February 1813? The 1841 Census Return for WEST Challow apparently records the family as Charles 29, Susannah 25, Elizabeth 5, George 3, and Sarah 4 months. I have no indication of place of birth of any of them, but the suggestion that Charles was Thomas' son was made to me many, many years ago. I never found him thereafter. It's just possible this could be another Wiltshire/Berkshire link. Regards Graham
Hello all, Very belatedly, I've added a new fragment and corresponding gedcom file for Gwen Eastment and Robert Sterry's Lovelock line, which has its origins in Berkshire and Oxfordshire. This information was already available on Robert's Sterry Worldwide Web pages (http://www,zip.com.au/~rsterry/gen/). The files are linked to the "Fragments" and "Gedcom files" sections as well as the "What's New" page. Regards, James PS For Robert, I also included a plug for your Sterry pages on the corresponding Lovelock pages, so that's one less pint I owe you when you're over in Europe :-)
Hello, Thanks to further devoted effort by Robert, there is now a new section on the Lovelock Web pages ("Sources" section) for Oxfordshire Lovelocks. Currently it contains PR extracts transcribed by Robert. Robert also provided yet another updated of the ever-growing Lovelocks in Wiltshire file, which I have linked to the Web pages after removing potentially living individuals. If anyone wants the uncensored file, either Robert or I can provide it. Regards, James
Hi all Have done another day down at the Society of Australian Genealogists (SAG) in Sydney - well, it IS school hols again! - and searched a lot more parishes in Oxfordshire. In fact, most of the parish registers in Oxfordshire have been transcribed and surname indexed - which is quite remarkable. The only other county I have so far come across which has so many modern transcriptions is Kent. There are 12 volumes of Oxfordshire PRs on fiche of which I have now searched 4. That leaves 8. So it will take me at least another three visits to search them all. Most of the Lovelocks I have found so far are post 1800 and on my direct line. But as I have very little source material on this line - most of it is from Gwen and based on the IGI and correspondence with other researchers - I am quite interested in this material. I have sent a current version of Lovelocks_in_Oxfordshire to James who will no doubt in time place it on the Lovelock web site. If you would like your own copy, email me individually. But please bear in mind that research on this county is very much in progress and will take some time to complete. You might prefer to wait until it is complete. Best wishes Robert ---------------------------------------------- Lovelock Family History http://www.ri.silicomp.fr/~loveluck/genealogy/lovelock/
Hi all Have just rechecked LDS film 1279365 (PRs) and film 1279393 (BTs) of Easton Royal in an effort to reconcile the differences between Malcolm Lovelock's data and my own. I have sent the updated Lovelocks in Wiltshire file to James and Malcolm separately since I can't attach to this list. If any of you want the update, email me separately and I'll be happy to send it. All entries which I had and Malcolm didn't are correct with a very small number of exceptions as listed below. All entries Malcolm had which I didn't are correct with a very small number of exceptions as listed below. (Pays to have more than one person check a film! Very easy to miss or misread detail). Where a question mark remains it still is not possible to be sure from the film. The entry is just too faint or smudged to be sure. Fortunately, there's only a very small number of these. The only way of checking these is to have someone check the actual parish register itself which might be clearer than the film. Malcolm's baptism entries for Portlock: 1744 Mar 5 Richard son of Robert and Mary Portlock are definitely not 'Lovelock' entries and have been deleted. The following baptism entry in the IGI: 1748 Feb 12 John Lovelock son of Thomas Lovelock and Mary could not be found in either the PRs or BTs despite a pretty thorough search. I think this entry has been confused with an identical entry for a burial. I have therefore deleted. The following baptism entry is definitely 'Jeny' 1751 Jan 19 on the same day was Bapt Jeny Daughter of John Lovelock & Ann his wife The Hawkings/Jone Lovelock baptisms have been amended: 1753/4 Jan 27 Willm Son of John Hawkence & Jone his wife Bapt Jany 27, 1754 1757 Aug 7 Jeny Daughter of John Hawkence & Jone his wife Bapt Aug 7, 1757 1755 Dec 14 Ann Daughter of John Hawkings & Jone his wife Bapt Decr 14, 1755 1759 May 13 Sarah Daughter of John hawkence & Jone his wife Bap May 13, 1759 Jone is probably Joane Lovelock bp 16.2.1716/17. It is of course rather unusual to be getting married for the first time at this age and we should look for an earlier marriage in another parish. Their daughter born in 1757 is Jeny not Jane. The baptism entry: 1768 Dec 30 Leaver/Leave ye son of Richard Lovlock and Mary his wife baptized December ye 30, 1768 is uncertain. The LDS Vital Records has 'Leave' but the entry is smudged. Personally I think it's 'Leaver'. Malcolm thought so too. In both of these baptism entries 1775 is correct: 1774 Feb 12 Rich Son of Rich & Mary Lovelock Feb 12 (R & M) (LDS Vital Records has 12 Feb 1775 not 1774) 1774 Mar 19 Baptized John Son of Edward & Ann Lovelock (R) (LDS Vital Records has 19 Mar 1775 not 1774) In this baptism entry 18 is correct. 1781 Nov 13 Bap Edward son of Edward & Ann Lovlock (R) (LDS has 18 Nov 1781 not 13.) In this baptism entry 1792 is correct. 1787 Nov 25 Bapt Fanny Bastard of Avis Lovelock (R) (LDS has 25 Nov 1792) In the baptism entry 1826 Sep 17 John son of Phebe Lovelock, Abode: Camberwell Camberwell is correct. In marriages, I located the entries I could not locate before: '1727-1741 appear to be missing' They are on a single page in the register and out of sequence. They occur before marriages for 1695. They are very faint and difficult to read. The year for this marriage entry is definitely 1729 which makes more sense with the baptism entries: 1719 Sep 22 Richeard Lovflick and Elizabeth pyke both of this parish married September 22 The marriage entry: 1735 Apr 6 Charles Sanfurd and -----? Lovelock which Malcolm found I cannot read. It is simply too faint on the film. It might be Lovelock. If so, it is Joannah Lovelock as I found some later Sanford baptisms (see below). This would almost certainly make it Joanna Lovelock baptised 1713/14 in this parish. The only way of double checking this entry is for someone to check the original parish register which might be clearer. In this entry, 'hawkence' and 'Jone' is correct: 1749 Dec 3 John hawkence & Jone Lovelock was married Decembr the 3, 1749 In this entry, Susanna is correct: 1799 Aug 12 William Lovelock of this parish, bachelor & Susanna Giddings, of this parish, Spinster. By Banns. Both put their marks. Witnesses: Richard Hamblin, Jonathon Culley. (R&M - M has Susannah) In Burials, I could not locate the following entry which Malcolm found: 1742 Oct 24 Thomas son of Thomas Lovelock (deleted) However, I did find: 1741 Oct 2 Henry s of Thomas Liflok mary b October 2 (inserted) Henry is unclear but it is definitely NOT Thomas. These burial entries are definitely Portlock and have been deleted: 1744 Sep 29 Richard son Robert and Mary Portlock(?) 1752 Mar 4 Mary Lovelock daughter of Robert Portlock? 1763 Jan 26 Robert Lovelock(Portlock?) This entry is definitely 1758 not 1748: 1758 Mar 24 Mary ye wife of Richard Lovelock buried March ye 24, 1758(R&M-Malcolm has 1748/58) This entry could not be found despite a thorough search of PRs and has been deleted: 1762 Oct 26 John Lovelock In these duplicate entries, Dec NOT Nov is correct: 1779 Dec 29 Buried John Lovelock 1779 Nov 29 Buried John Lovelock In this entry, Feb 19 should be Feb 9: 1783 Feb 19 Buried Mary Lovlock I also went looking for any further offspring of Joane Lovelock (who married John Hawkins), Joanna Lovelock (who married Charles Sanford), Jane Lovelock (who married Philip Doust) Avis Lovelock (who married William Treson) and Sarah Lovelock (who married John Elliatt) with results as follows. I also located a few relevant burials. So will check any variances in those parishes as well. Best wishes. Robert
