    1. Monumental Inscriptions and Apprenticeships - Wiltshire
    2. Robert Sterry
    3. Hi all Malcolm Lovelock recently sent me a number of MIs and Apprenticeship records for Lovelocks in Wiltshire. The MIs are mostly post 1900 and the Apprenticeships are mainly for Wootton Rivers. I have combined these files into the Lovelocks in Wiltshire Vital Records. Hopefully this makes it easier to cross reference to other vital records for Wiltshire. Apprenticeships are of course not usually considered 'vital records' but I thought they were still worth including here as they clearly related to specific parishes. As usual, if you would like the file directly from me rather than waiting for James to find time to upload to the Lovelock web site please email me separately. Best wishes Robert

    3. Hi That was a very quick response! >premises = Fox and Hounds >occupier = Frederick Lovelock >address = Shirburn Street >city = Watlington, Oxfordshire >dates = 1851-1861 >Addinf = Listed in Commercial Directories for Oxfordshire 1851 & >1861. Our > only previous record of these premises was from the 1881 Census. > > Do you have further details from the 1871 Census? In particular, how > was his age and occupation recorded? If you also have the Census/PRO > reference number it would be a huge bonus. > > Additionally, can you say which commercial directories you used for > the 1851 and 1861 sources? Coincidentally, a fellow researcher, John Lovelock, has just sent me detail on this. All entries are from Oxfordshire Directories. I'm not sure whether the entries are from the commercial or residential listings. 1847: Watlington: Frederick Lovelock Innkeeper Fox and Hounds Shirburn Street 1850: Watlington: Commercial: Frederick Lovelock Fox and Hounds 1854: Watlington: Frederick Lovelock Fox and Hounds 1863: Watlington: No Frederick entry at all 1869: Watlington: Fredrick Lovelock Fox and Hounds 1876: Watlington: Charles Lovelock Fox and Hounds 1887: No Lovelock entries at all Unfortunately I don't have the original entries from the 1851, '61 or '71 censuses. Am forwarding this to John Lovelock who hopefully will be able to supply the detail requested. Am also forwarding to the Lovelock list and another cousin in Australia. Thanks for your assistance. Hopefully you may be able to add some further information for us further down the track. 1. James Lovelock 1785-1864
    2. Robert Sterry
    3. Hi John Have given a bit more thought to James' movement. As you say, we know he was in Stoke Talmage in 1851 and not listed in the Oxfordshire Directory in Talmage for 1847. [I'm not sure that that necessarily means he was not living there at the time though. I don't think listing in the Directory at that time was by any means automatic. Not like phone directories today. According to Mark Herber, 'Ancestral Trails', 'only about 6 per cent of the population of the area covered by the directory (was listed in the early 19th century, mostly) wealthier or otherwise notable citizens'. As the 19th century progressed, directories became more comprehensive in the coverage of businesses and began to include private citizens .... (p 133) ] We also know from the baptism entries of his children that he was a butcher in Watlington between 1814 and 1817. However, we haven't found the baptism of his last son Charles. In fact we haven't found Charles' marriage or where he died either. Neither he nor his wife doesn't appear in the 1881 census so presumeably died before 1881. However, I note that John Talbot in his correspondence with you 8.11.00 has a death of an Annis Lovelock 2.11.1877 of this parish. (I assume that means Watlington.) I did not place this death before but it looks like it would be Annis the wife of Charles Lovelock. I went looking for Charles and Annis Lovelock's daughter in the 1881 but could not find her. Presumeably she married before then. However, I did find this interesting entry: Dwelling: No 36 Corn Market Leopold Arms Census Place: Oxford St Michael, Oxford, England Source: FHL Film 1341363 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 1502 Folio 58 Page 7 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Charles LOVELOCK M 49 M Wallingford, Berkshire, England Rel: Head Occ: Inn Keeper Emma LOVELOCK M 47 F Abingdon, Berkshire, England Rel: Wife Mary LOVELOCK U 22 F Watlington, Oxford, England Rel: Daur Occ: Inn Keepers Daughter Juley LOVELOCK U 11 m F Watlington, Oxford, England Rel: Daur Elizabeth NUTT M 59 F Telsworth Or Tetsworth, Oxford, England Rel: Serv Occ: Cook (D S) Who was this Charles born abt 1832 in Wallingford? It has to be Charles Gibbs Lovelock I think. Amazing difference in age between the two daughters. One would suspect there were other children in between. And while I was looking at the 1881, I had a look for James bn 1852 Watlington s. of George and Ann Squires Gordge. I found: Dwelling: 17 Oxford Cottages Oxford Rd Butchers Shop Census Place: Tilehurst, Berkshire, England Source: FHL Film 1341315 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 1299 Folio 86 Page 29 Marr Age Sex Birthplace James LOVELOCK U 26 M Watlington, Oxford, England Rel: Head Occ: Butcher George GOOWELL U 18 M Hurst, Berkshire, England Rel: Servant Occ: Butcher Now this is almost certainly the same James, although the year is a little out. However, I have this James married to a Phoebe with a son James bn 1870. This would appear to be incorrect. The source for the birth of James in 1870 is the 1881 census but he is shown there as living with his grandparents George L. & Ann Squires (Gordge). Frederick Charles L. bn 1861 is too young to be his father. So that only leaves George William L. There is no sign of Frederick Charles bn 1861 in the 1881 census. Chances are that he died before then. I had no trouble finding George William L. though as follows: Dwelling: 201 Southampton St Census Place: Reading St Giles, Berkshire, England Source: FHL Film 1341317 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 1307 Folio 91 Page 3 Marr Age Sex Birthplace George W. Perhaps James L bn abt 1870 was a son of George William L. and was off staying with his grandparents on census night. We really need to find the marriage of George William L. and Mary A. but that might well be in Stafford or even London, since James was born there. The baptism of James L would be even more difficult to find! I also checked for Ellen Webb Stone nee Lovelock since I have her marrying Robert Stone in 1878. I believe this is her: Dwelling: 31 Vachel Rd Census Place: Reading St Lawrence, Berkshire, England Source: FHL Film 1341317 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 1305 Folio 16 Page 25 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Robert STONE M 26 M Winkfield, Berkshire, England Rel: Head Occ: Carpenter Ellen W. 2. James Loveluck
    3. Hello all, Just after I sent my previous message concerning a number of updates to the Lovelock Web pages, I got a couple of more messages (from Michael Turner and Malcolm Lovelock) with additional material! Of course, I'm delighted to see all this activity, and I just hope I'll be able to keep up with it (especially since I'm taking another vacation, for 2 weeks, starting this weekend). Anyway, I've now added the two new files to the Web pages. Here are the details, taken from the "What's New" page: 16-Aug-01: Added the following two files: Hampshire GRO Lovelock extracts (Word document) - provided by Michael Turner 14-Aug-01 The work was done by Michael's wife, Alison Turner Lovelock Extracts from the Gloucestershire 1851 census, provided 14-Aug-01 by Malcolm Lovelock - extracted from the Gloucestershire 1851 Census on CD. The first item can be found under Sources -> Hampshire. For the second item I would have included it on the Sources -> General page, since we had no other Gloucestershire source material up to now, but since Robert is threatening to get to work on Gloucestershire ( :-)), and alos to please Steve Tanner, I thought it was worthwhile to create a new page for it, so you'll find the GLS census records under Sources -> Gloucestershire. Regards, James

    3. Evening Graham Quite possibly Graham. Does anyone feel like extracting Lovelocks from Malmesbury PRs in Wiltshire? Unfortunately, these registers have not been filmed by the LDS. So they're certainly not in the IGI. That means a visit to the Wiltshire Record Office to have a look. I think that leaves me out at the moment from Australia. Any other takers? 3. Hi Steve I'm just about ready to launch Lovelocks in Gloucestershire. This will include IGI, Ancestral File, Pegigree Resource File, Vital Records Brisish Isles (LDS), Boyd's Marriage Index, Phillimore's Marriages plus other bits and pieces I found at the Society of Australian Genealogists including Gloucestershire Marriage Allegations 1637-1680, Bristol Marriages 1800-1837, Monumental Inscriptions Cheltenham, Bristol Marriages Licence Bonds 1637-1700, A Calendar of the Registers of the Freemen of the City of Gloucester 1641-1838, Historical Monumental and Genealogical Collections Relative to the County of Gloucester printed from the original papers of the late Ralph Biglands, MIs Index Gloucestershire (1994), Gloucestershire Goal Index 1815-1879, Criminal Register Indexes 1805-1816 + 1817-1828(Bristol), Bristol Infirmary Patients Index 1751-1775, Gloucestershire Marriage Index 1800-1837, Bristol Crew Lists 1866-1886 and Wills and Admins 1801-1858. Now I hope you won't continue to feel ignored!!!!!! 3. Evening all I am sure, Steve, that it is no so much a matter of ignoring you, but, speaking for myself anyway, not having even the remotest hint of a link to Shipton Moyne or any other Gloucester Lovelocks. However, and this is one for the List to pick up on as well, Shipton Moyne is only just over the border from Wiltshire so perhaps there may be some connection. One of "my" lots, for instance, provides a Wiltshire/Hampshire connection. Perhaps it is time we added the Gloucestershire data. There is one other matter that occurs to me. I have been through Shipton Moyne on a few occasions, and often travel near it when picking up one of my colleagues from Malmesbury for an out-of-office visit. Malmesbury is a fairly large parish, and yet I note that on the Site we have no data from there at all. But even odder for a parish so large is that it does not get a mention in the "Parishes searched without finding any Lovelocks" list at the head of the section. James and Robert - is it true that we have missed somewhere? It could easily be that the Shipton Moyne families had Malmesbury connections, and there would be our Wiltshire/Gloucester link. Enough speculation for tonight Regards Graham From: TnS750@aol.com To: LOVELOCK-L@rootsweb.com Subject: re: lovelocks in Gloucester Date: Tue, 14 Aug 2001 15:58:31 EDT Hello malcolm I'm a rather passive spectator of the "Lovelock list" as nobody seems interested in my lot (Shipton Moyne, Gloucester) and ignores my mailings. 3. Hi All I recently bought a copy of the Gloucestershire 1851 Census on CD. I have used the search facility on the CD, to my disappointment it only came up with 20 Lovelock entries. I was expecting 200-300. I have compiled a list with codes and sent a copy to James, if anyone requires a copy, just let me know. One code is missing the letter U so I have just left it blank. I will also check in the next week or so the rest of the online Gloucestershire Censuses as they contain 1851-1891 data. Regards Malcolm "L"

    1. Vernham Dean PRs
    2. Robert Sterry
    3. Hi Sally The film of Vernham Dean, Hampshire has finally come in. (LDS #1041219) The film contains Baptisms 1598-1653, Marriages 1607-1653 and Burials 1598-1629. I have so far searched the Baptisms and Burials. The interest for me was to what extent the IGI actually covered the baptisms. People often assume that the IGI covers all the events of a particular parish - at least for baptisms and/or marriages. This is despite the fact that the intro to the IGI itself warns researchers against using the IGI as a final reference. We know that the IGI does not normally contain burials. But were the baptisms in this early period complete? As it turned out they were not. This is not of course a criticism of the IGI. But this little exercise certainly reinforces the need to check parish registers and not to rely completely on the IGI. Righto! That's enough of my soapbox for one email. Here's the results of my search so far. Marriages next time. (Interestingly this parish register contains some quite early Lovelock events right on the boundary with Berkshire and Wiltshire. Can anyone find any new connections to known Lovelock lines?) 2. James Loveluck
    3. Malcolm is in the process of making a detailed comparison of the two files with Wilts. Nimrod marriage extracts, but a casual inspection reveals that the most important difference is that the extracts I obtained only go up to 1750, whereas Malcolm has entries up to 1890. It seems that I only requested entries up to 1750 - I must have been short of cash at the time :-) However, this doesn't explain all the differences - even for those entries before 1750 there are about 30 in Malcolm;s file which are not in mine, and about 20 in my file which are not in Malcolm's. 3. Hello all, Malcolm L pointed out to me that his file with the Lovelock extracts from the Nimrod marriage index is already linked to the Lovelock Web pages: -> Sources -> Wiltshire -> section on "Wiltshire - Other Records" The file includes records from other sources as well (e.g. the IGI) but the Nimrod extracts are clearly indicated by N-... at the beginning of the line. In fact, Malcolm sent me a more recent version of his file, and I have now linked this one to the Web page. Malcolm confirmed that there are about 211 Nimrod records, and that he obtained these in Aug 1986. For comparison, I have now also linked to the same Web page the Nimrod marriage extracts (about 98 of them) which I obtained from the Carters in Sept. 1998. So it seems as if I got short-changed! In fact, its not simply the case that Malcolm had a lot of extracts which I didn't get. I haven't been through the files completely yet, but I already saw one record (the second in the list I got) which is not in Malcolm's file! This seems to indicate that the extraction method used by the Carters isn't very reliable! Although I haven't checked this, I believe that Robert has the entries from both files, since I think he first included the records I had (flagged as Nimrod index) and then added the extra records from Malcolm. Regards, James
