    1. Re: LOVELOCK-D Digest V03 #11
    2. Hello list. Sorry to continue with Margam Abbey MI`s but I know it is important to some. All we have to find know is a second marriage for D.E. Marendaz and a Catherine. Proving hard owing to two things. St. Catherine's Index in very poor condition for first few years. And Margam Abbey Parish Registers proving hard to get at as the are only in the Abbey for years after 1837? Best Regards Allen in Aberavon.

    3. For those interested in the Glamorgan Lovelucks/Lovelocks, I've made soem recent updates to the LovelUck Web pages, http://perso.numericable.fr/~lovjames/family-history/loveluck/index.html Here are the details from the "What's New" page: * 17-Jan-03: Updated the page containing open questions and issues concerning Loveluck family history <http://perso.numericable.fr/%7Elovjames/family-history/loveluck/loveluck-questions.htm> to include some responses and relevant information from Allen Blethyn, Lynne Davis, Catherine Lovelock, Robert Sterry together with bits I dug out myself. * 17-Jan-03: Made some corrections and additions (provided by Allen Blethyn) to the MIs for the Abbey Church of St Mary, Margam <http://perso.numericable.fr/%7Elovjames/family-history/loveluck/mis-st-marys-margam.htm>. * 8-Jan-03: On the Family Tree page <http://perso.numericable.fr/%7Elovjames/family-history/loveluck/family-tree.htm>, updated to the latest version (V3.02) of the Java Applet, which has some new features - the index can be switched on and off, and the applet starts faster because it uses libraries (jar files). Also, I managed to produce a gedcom file (using PAF) which is handled better by the Java applet. The Java applet does not handle all gedcom 5.0 tags, but a gedcom 4.0 compatible file is handled much better. The notes and sources can now be visualised (in the "List" view) although the presentation is still not perfect. Thanks to all those who contributed! Regards, James

    3. It really is marvellous to have a "man on the spot"! Many thanks Allen for your graveyard investigation. I'll remove the spurious refereence to Catherine on the Web page with the Margam MIs. This still doesn't explain how Catherine Marendaz shows up in the census records for 1841, 1851, 1881 and 1891, since the MI claims that she died in 1836! Unless David Emmanuel Marendaz married a second Catherine. Thanks a lot for filling in the blanks in the MI for this gravestone (A20). I'll include the details on the Web page. Thanks again Allen! Sunny and cold (-5 deg C in the morning) in Grenoble for the last couple of days, but a bit warmer (4 deg) and cloudier today! Regards, James Ableth@aol.com wrote: >Hello list, >Grave D74. 2. Hello list, Grave D74. MARGAM ABBEY. The Surname on this grave is in all cases spelt MARENDAZ. and not as reported in Glam FHS MI`s as Marendez. More important is the fact that the bottom line in the same Glam MI`s regarding Catherine does not exist on the stone in question.? That was the reason why I went there to check owing to the same Catherine being mentioned on Grave A20. Margam. The above grave is the grave on James`s site regarding JENKIN BEVAN On James`s site owing to it being taken from a photograph, he has included some ? ?. Here are the missing ? ? in order H.M.Customs. Nov.28th.1896. aged 49 years [ at no. 9 Courtland Terrece Port Talbot.] 25th.September 1913. aged 57 years. No mason`s mark, but it looks very familiar to me? Best Regards Allen in Aberavon.

    3. Thanks Jean, that's interesting. Berkshire is very much Lovelock country of course! However, Robert's latest Berkshire Lovelocks file has scarcely any entries for Wantage - just a few marriages and burials in the 16th and 17th centuries! Any chance that you could get a bit more information, e.g. grandfather's name and approx. date of birth. 3. Hello all, Each time I send a message to the Lovelock mailing list recently, I receive an error message from Rootsweb, of the form: Your message To: LOVELOCK-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Updated Berkshire Lovelocks file Sent: Fri, 10 Jan 2003 10:02:44 -0000 did not reach the following recipient(s): LOVELOCK-L@rootsweb.com on Fri, 10 Jan 2003 10:15:56 -0000 The recipient name is not recognized The MTS-ID of the original message is: c=US;a= ;p=ICON;l=ICON010301101015CNL9N1ZH In fact, the messages do appear on the list, but its a bit annoying to get the error messages all the time. Before trying to understand what's going wrong, I wanted to check whether I am the only one who is experiencing the problem, or whether everyone who sends messages to the list is getting the error messages. Maybe I haven't paid my dues :-( Regards, James ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1. Updated Berkshire Lovelocks file
    2. James Loveluck
    3. Hello all, I've updated the file "Lovelocks in Berkshire by Parish" to correspond to the latest one provided by Ropbert Sterry. As usual, I've removed baptisms later than 1902 and marriages later than 1922. The complete file can be obtained on request from Robert or myself. The file is linked to Sources->Berkshire->Lovelocks in Berkshire by Parish and is also linked to the "What's New" page. Here is the description, taken from Robert's message: 10-Jan-03: Updated the file Lovelocks in Berkshire by Parish to the latest version provided by Robert Sterry This version includes all the wonderful Berkshire Lovelock marriages that John Lovelock kindly obtained from the Berkshire FHS from their latest Marriage Index into the Lovelocks in Berkshire file. Of the 162 Lovelock marriage entries, 63 were new! The combined vital records (mostly BDMs) for Lovelocks in Berkshire now represents over 80% of the approx 180 church parishes in Berkshire! A pretty impressive resource by any standard. Quite a few non-conformist records are also included. Many thanks to Robert and John for their excellent work! Following Allen's example, here are the local weather conditions in Grenoble: cold (-3 deg C) and dry but we had our first sprinkling of snow in the valley yesterday. This after several weeks of very mild weather, with temperatures as high as 19 deg C. Regards, James

    1. Re: Loveluck-Marendaz Family Margam.
    2. James Loveluck
    3. Thanks a lot Allen - I didn't have the information about the marriage of John Loveluck Marendaz/Maranday and Lydia Griffiths. Lydia and two of the children also show up in the 1851 census (still at Penllergaer schoolhouse) - I couldn't figure out who this family was without the missing information you provided: Census of Parcel Penderi Ref H.O. 107/2465 E.D.3C. Address: Penllergaer Schoolroom Marendaz Lydia Head (Widow?) 46 Schoolmistress Gla Swansea (c.1805) Marendaz John Son 17 Grocer's apprentice Gla Swansea (c. 1834) Marendaz George Son 12 Scholar Gla Swansea (c.1839) You allude to John Loveluck Marendaz "getting into a spot of trouble". I found out about this in the article by A. Leslie Evans "The Marendaz and Thomas Families of Glamorgan", which contains the following phrase: "It seems likely that the John Loveluck Marendaz, a traveller for the Evan Evans' Brewery at Neath, who embezzled his employer's money in 1843, was a brother to Francis" [You'll find a copy of Leslie Evans' article on the Loveluck Web pages, under Documents->Marendaz & Thomas Families.] Captain DMK Marendaz (g grandson of DE Marendaz junior) was obviously embarrassed by this wayward ancestor, since in a reply to Leslie Evans' article he wrote: "No one of my family have heard of another son or John Lovelock Marendaz, nether has any descendants ever been heard of such a man, or his place of baptism, marriage or burial" [I got a copy of this document from the NLW] I hope Allen and I don't bore the other listers with our Glamorgan tales! 1. Re: Loveluck-Marendaz Family Margam.
    2. Hello List, Mainly for James but all comments welcomed at all times. The Marendaz name as spelt by David Emanuel MARENDAZ when he signed his own name on Margam Register at his marriage dated 9th.of Sept. 1798. Ann signed as Lovluck, in the prefence of D. ? Loveluck and Edward Loveluck. Married by Licence by the well known local vicar John Hunt. But the main point of my writing today is about their son John Loveluck Marendez b.1806. Margam. He turned up for me today on the Glam FHS. Pre 1837 marriage list as John Loveluck Maranday marrying Lydia Griffiths at St. Mary Swansea in 1826. Lucky for the name Loveluck. 1841. Glam FHS. CD Census . Butter St. Neath Town. With Evan Evans. 45. spirit merchant. John Marendaz 35 male servant. So here he was living away from his wife of 15 yrs married. We will see a little later John getting himself into a spot of trouble here in Neath. So to his wife Lydia, 1841. Census Penllergaer schoolhouse. Llangyfelach. [Swansea ] Lydia Marender 36. schoolmistress. Mary Ann Marender 12. Henry Marender 10. John Marender 8. Sefton Marender 6. George Marender 2. What is interesting about this in 1841 is that the above schoolhouse is next to Penllergaer House which is the family home of the gentry Llewellyn family who are related to the Talbot family of Margam Park. I am still working on the MI of Grave of Catherine wife of David Emanuel Marendaz, I am making slow progress there James. Best Regards Allen in freezing Aberavon
