    3. I am a "silent" list member (because I haven't done much research yet) however I watch with interest. I think a Lovelock/Loveluck gathering would be a great event, but I doubt that I would be able to attend - you never know though, so keep us posted. I haven't gone very far back in my line, but we appear to be from Dogmersfield, Hants. Jan Morgan (nee Lovelock) Melbourne, Australia

    1. Lieflock line - second update
    2. James Loveluck
    3. Hello all, following my previous message on this subject I have now done a second update of the Lieflock line, which covers up to point (hh) in the "Comments on the Lieflock Line" document. As before, the update includes: o An update to the annotated version of the discussion between Robert and Graham, indicating which points have been taken into account and how o An updated version of the Lieflock Line descendent report o An updated gedcom file, which contains much more information than the above, including source references, notes, etc. Details are available from the Web pages ("What's New", "Wiltshire Family Trees and Fragments"). (for those who have managed to use the Java applet, this also now uses the updated gedcom file). Jeremy & Janet Lovelock will be pleased to learn that their line descended from Elijah Lovelock b. 22 Dec 1851 is now included! I think I'm now about half way through the comments! Regards, James

    3. Please add my name to the list as well John - in our initial exchanges I obviously didn't make it clear that, not only I think its an excellent idea, but I hope to attend the event if possible. To complete the details on your list, I live near Grenoble in France, so I might not be much help with the logistics, but if there's anything else I could do I'm certainly willing. Maybe I could already include a "pre-announcement" on the Lovelock Web pages! 3. John Apologies for the lack of response from this quarter. I have been canvassing the degree of interest amongst my immediate family, and all are enthusiastic. I am happy to offer my services regarding the admin, if there turns out to be anything I can turn my hand to. I have had a few thoughts following on from the points you raised in your original message, and will be happy to share them when appropriate. With respect to a title for the event, what about something that captures what would be the essence of it for most of us, such as "Lovelocks Coming Home" ? 1. Browsing the Lovelocl/luck trees on-line
    2. James Loveluck
    3. Hello all, I've added a new "feature" to both the LovelOck and LovelUck Web pages (in fact, for the LovelUck Web pages its not really a new feature, but an update of an existing one). It consists of a Java applet, developed by Helmut Braess, which allows one to browse a family tree in either a graphical or text form. Here's the description I included on the "What's New" pages: This program allows you to view information in the database (actually in the corresponding GEDCOM file) either in textual (list) or graphic form. The textual form includes essentially all of the available information (including notes, source references, etc.), whereas the graphic form just shows the family tree with name, year of birth and year of death (where available) for each individual. The data can be presented as either a descendent or an ancestor tree. You can switch between the different views and move around the tree dynamically. For the LovelOck Web pages, the program is available from the page Trees and Fragments -> Wilts Trees & Fragments -> (see the section "Dynamic Browsing of the Wiltshire Trees and Fragments") For the LovelUck Web pages the program is available from the page Family Tree -> Family Tree Summary (see the section "Dynamic Browsing of the Glamorgan Lovelucks Family Tree") In both cases there is a direct link from the "What's New" page. I've installed the latest version of the applet, which requires Java 1.4 or later. Let me know if you have problems, and I could add an older version which runs with previous versions of Java - however, not all of the features of the latest version will be available. There is on-line help (in English German and French - contributed by yours truly) which explains most of the features of the program, but I think its fairly intuitive. Let me know if you have any problems, and I'd also be interested to learn if you find this program useful. Regards, James

    1. Maps of Lovelock distribution
    2. James Loveluck
    3. Hello all, Some of you may remember that some time ago I produced a map showing the distribution of Lovelocks from the 1881 census. I produced this map in a very painstaking way based on raw data which I obtained by querying the census county by county, using a map of counties which I obtained from GENUKI, and colouring it by hand using paintshop or some similar tool. Well I recently discovered that there is now an automatic Web-based tool for doing this! See: http://www.wykes.org/ukdist/ So I have now added some additional maps, which I obtained using this tool. The tool is quite sophisticated and has options for distributions by census place or bithplace and for plotting the population density rather than the raw numbers (Lovelocks attained a peak density of .0010051 in Wiltshire!) I was quite pleased to notice that my hand-crafted efforts looked quite similar to those from this wonderful tool! You'll find these maps linked to the page: Lovelock genealogy -> Lovelock distribution They are also listed on the "What's New" page. James PS I just can't resist gadgets!

    2. James Loveluck
    3. Hello all, A couple of weeks ago we exchanged several messages about the Web site www.1837online.com which was advertising a service (with reasonable charges) for accessing images of GRO records. The service is still not available, but on the Web site they claim that they will have permission from the GRO to go on-line on 1 April - see text below from the Web site. I hope its not an April 1st joke! James ------ Updated Friday 21st February 2003. Family Research Link is absolutely delighted to announce that on the 10th February, after almost three years of our ongoing discussions and negotiations with the General Record Office, the decision has been made to relax access to index information less than 100 years old. These changes are due to take effect from 1st April 2003, at which date we will be pleased to open our site to you with the indexes from 1837 to 2001. We hope that you will be as thrilled as we are with this outcome, which we believe benefits the genealogical community worldwide.

    1. Lovelock/Loveluck gathering
    2. John Lovelock
    3. Earlier this week I contacted James Loveluck to enquire whether or not a Lovelock/Loveluck gathering had ever been held or considered. James replied that such an event had never been held but he found it to be an attractive proposition. As our roots appear to be in Wiltshire and Berkshire ( "Lovelock Country"!) this would appear to be the obvious venue. The event would clearly need a lot of forward planning and at the earliest be held in the summer of 2004 or 2005. I would be happy to co-ordinate the arrangements provided I received some assistance from UK based Lovelock Listers. First thoughts on the event (probably held over a weekend) are that it would: * Provide an opportunity to meet other Lovelock Listers ( & distant relatives ) * Provide a forum for exchanging ideas to progress the Lovelock Family History Research * Provide an opportunity to visit places associated with the early Lovelocks I understand that there are 44 people who have subscribed to the Lovelock list, some in the UK and Europe and several in Australia and New Zealand. I am conscious that for some Listers the cost of attending such an event may be prohibitive. However I would be pleased to hear your views via The List on whether or not you think such a gathering is viable and any ideas you might have on the content to ensure that everyone benefits from such a forum. Also I would be pleased to receive offers of help! Anyway I look forward to receiving your views on this proposal. 1. The return of the Lieflock Line!
    2. James Loveluck
    3. Hello all, Some of you will remember the lively discussion between Robert Sterry and Graham Lovelock which followed the publication in July 1999 of "The Lieflock Line" on the Web pages. The Lieflock Line was, and probably still is, the most complete Lovelock tree we have. Many of the conclusions of this discussion never got incorporated into a new version of The Lieflock Line, due to my failing in my duties :-( I have finally summoned up the energy to plunge back into the Lieflock Line, and I have started to gradually update my database to take into account the conclusions of the discussion mentioned above. In the meantime, we have much improved collections of PRs (thanks to Robert and other contributors) so I'm also trying to take into account this new information. This is quite a lengthy process, and rather than keep everyone waiting until I've completed the work, I've decided to make available periodic updates. These will take the form of: o An annotated version of the discussion between Robert and Graham, indicating which points have been taken into account and how o An updated version of the Lieflock Line descendent report o An updated gedcom file, which contains much more information than the above, including source references, notes, etc. The first installment is now available, and the details are described on the "What's New" page. For those of you who are familiar with the note containing the discussion between Robert and Graham, this revision covers points (a) to (l) together with (v), (w) and (z) (following the discussion of the two wives of George L, both named Eliza Fisher). Regards, James
