    3. Hi all, My husband's Lovelocks are from Victoria. He is descended from John Frederick Lovelock b.1-6-1839 in Aston Upthorp, Berkshire who married Mary Louisa Parsons in 1863 in Melbourne, Victoria. Any connection with anyone? Jean Lovelock. Perth, Western Australia.

I note that there is an appropriate baptism at St Giles without Cripplegate: 1815 Nov 26 Jane d. Thomas Lovelock & Ann > Could her father be the same Thomas baptized in 1786 s/o Edward and > Elizabeth LOVELOCK in Holborn? Did Thomas LOVELUCK [sic] marry Anne > HEAVENS at Christchurch Greyfriars in 1814? The dates certainly fit. And there aren't too many other Thomas Lovelocks about for this time period. Lovelock/Loveluck is a pretty common variation and certainly not one confined to Wales. It would be excellent to locate some further information to confirm this link. For example, you may be lucky enough to find an apprenticeship bond for Thomas as a stonemason, say abt 1800-1804. London Apprenticeship Records have been indexed for Masons 1663-1805 and are available on microfiche. Larger genealogical societies and centres should have a copy. Alternatively, I can check for you at the Society of Australian Genealogists in Sydney next time I'm in the city. Here's an example of what you may find. These entries are for my own surname of STERRY, on which I'm doing a One-Name Study: Tinplateworkers' Company 1666, 1668, 1676, 1681, 1683-1800 STEREY Joseph s. Joseph, Streatham, Sry, cooper to John WEST (snr) 1 Jan 1688/89 SALTER Nicholas s. Nicholas, Taunton, Som. to Joseph STERRY 1 May 1702 STERREY Wasey s. Thomas, St Olave Southwark, Surrey, tallow chandler to Joseph STERREY 8 Jan 1716/17 You may also be lucky enough to find Thomas as a member of the Mason's Guild. Quite a few Guild Records have now been indexed. You could also try newspapers. For example, the Gentleman's Magazine was published monthly from 1731 to 1868 and contains notices of births, marriages and deaths, and announcements of bankrupts and military and clerical appointments. Entries refer to the upper class but also to middle class families or other persons of note. The Mormon Church has indexed all surnames in the Gentleman's Magazine and these are available on microfilm. SAG have a bound version. There are London Directories for 1781, 1782, 1783 and 1817 that have been surname indexed and have been published on fiche. Here's a few STERRY entries from the 1817 Directory to give you an idea of what to expect: Sterry A & J, oilmen, 156 Borough Sterry Henry & Co., merchts., 36 Basinghall-st Sterry Richard & Co., whol. oilmen, Layton's-bldgs, Borough And of course don't forget land records - if you think Thomas may have owned property. I'm sure others on the list will also have a few research ideas. That should do for starters! Best of luck Robert

    3. Very many thanks for the recently added work on London and Middlesex parishes. It is a great resource, but didn't come up with a link for me. Perhaps I can post my interest again to see if anyone can shed light on my ancestor Thomas LOVELOCK. He was described as a stonemason on his daughter Jane's marriage to Peter HERBERT at Christchurch Greyfriars on 22 Sep. 1850. (Jane had previously been married to Francis BURLAND in the same church in 1837.) Peter and Jane HERBERT were in Hoxton in 1856. In the same area were a James and Anne LOVELOCK. According to the 1851 census of Islington, Jane was born in 1815 and possibly baptized at St. Giles without Cripplegate in November that year. Could her father be the same Thomas baptized in 1786 s/o Edward and Elizabeth LOVELOCK in Holborn? Did Thomas LOVELUCK [sic] marry Anne HEAVENS at Christchurch Greyfriars in 1814? I believe there might have been an earlier connection with the HERBERT family, when a John LOVELOCK married Charlotte HERBERT at St.Leonards, Shoreditch in 1802. I have not been able to find a death registered for Thomas. I would be grateful for any pointers on how to trace Thomas the stonemason. Many thanks for all the information provided on the website. and good luck to all. Clare Westbury. Calgary, Canada

    3. Hi Graham Welcome to the list. I only have a minor interest in the Lovelock surname at this time so can't comment specifically on the Lovelock use of Biblical names. However, my research suggests the use of Isaac and other biblical names does not seem to denote Jewish blood. On my fathers side, I have traced the use of Isaac as a given name back to the 1700's in the heart of Wiltshire. In this family's case, they seemed to have non conformist leanings. The home of one of them was licensed for use as a meeting place for methodists. 3. Hi Graham Great to hear from you again and welcome to the Lovelock list. I'm in Australia and (as I think you already know - can't remember if we discussed this) am the second cousin of Gwen Eastment nee Lovelock whom I believe you once had some correspondence. Gwen is one of the original Lovelock researchers along with Janet Hearle. They started some thirty years ago!! About all they had then was what the family could tell them and the IGI. So we've come a long way since then! The Lovelock list is amazingly active for a relatively unusual surname. I look forward to your future postings. I thought your question re Jewish sounding names is a good one and I'm not really sure. But I've never come across a Lovelock Jewish connection and suspect, as you suggest, those names were just a fad at the time. Whatever happened to all those 'Crystals' and 'Waterfalls' and 'Rainbows' of the 80s, I wonder? Perhaps others on the list have some ideas. I have just spent a day at the Society of Australian Genealogists in Sydney (I live about 1 and a half to 2 hours out of Sydney in the foothills of the Blue Mountains) and have collected some further Lovelock primary data. I'm still working on Lovelocks in London and Middlesex. As you will recall from James Loveluck's recent posting, he has uploaded my latest effort at bringing together primary data (mainly births/baptisms, marriages and deaths/burials) for London and Middlesex. This includes the IGI (downloaded from the LDS website) plus the published transcripts of London and Middlesex parish records by the Harleian Society (conveniently surname indexed and also now available on CD-ROM), plus Pallot Index (now also conveniently available on CD-ROM), plus Boyd's Marriage Index (Miscellaneous) and the LDS Vital Records British Isles (2nd Edition). Yesterday I completed extracting Lovelocks from the last of the Harleian Society publications plus Boyd's Marriage Index Main Series for London and Middlesex. I also started but did not complete checking Phillimore's Marriages for Middlesex vols 1-9 (now also available on CD-ROM and finally searchable!) Will complete next time I'm at SAG. SAG unfortunately don't have Boyd's London Burials so will have to order in films from LDS - unless any of the members of the Lovelock list feel like a trip to the Society of Genealogists in London who have these on microfilm there. There's quite a lot of indexing coming out on CD-ROM now - as I'm sure many of you will know. Here's a sample of what SAG has of interest: Wiltshire 1871 census Hampshire Burial Index 1400-1837 Berkshire Phillimores Marriages Vols 1-2 Surrey Poor Law Index and Calendar (for ALL non-metropolitan parishes - quite an achievement by the West Surrey Family History Society who seem to be particularly active!) I extracted Lovelocks for the Surrey Poor Law CD. Will send to James for inclusion on website when typed up. Mostly Removal Orders. Great to see these being transcribed and indexed as they're very slow to work through in the original form of parish papers. The Berkshire FHS has done much the some for that county - already on Lovelock website. Wonderful resources. I'm really looking forward very much to the Lovelock gathering at Hungerford in 2004 and finally meeting so many Lovelock researchers personally. What a gathering it will be! I'm planning on also spending quite a bit of time at SOG and the PRO in London while I'm over there. It's a long way from Australia and I'm certainly going to make the most of the available opportunity of accessing all those wonderful English archives! Anyone else planning along similar lines? Best wishes to you all and happy hunting!!! 2. I am Graham Lovelock of Wellington New Zealand I found the excellent web site and have corresponded by e-mail with Graham Lovelock of Wiltshire I am a descendant of Isaac Lovelock (Fragment 3 - Kent Lovelocks) who was borne in Tunbridge-Wells on 25th November 1804 For other Lovelocks on this list who may have various interests, I am a Chartered Accountant, a member of the Anglican Church, an alumni of the Harvard business school, a Freemason, and a member of Mensa. I have a daughter living in London I also follow Rugby and believe the All Blacks will give England a hard time in the Rugby World Cup final. Does anyone know how many Lovelocks are in this e-mail group. Another question for those who have done the research, I am not aware of any Jewish blood in the family, but a lot of the ancestors from Kent had names like Isaac anf Levy and I wondered if it signalled anything or was just a fad Regards to all Graham Lovelock

    2. James Loveluck
    3. Hello all, I've added some new material to the Web pages: - A collection of Lovelock records provided by Jill Fleming. There are quite a lot for Berks. but also many for London, Hants., ... Robert is cross checking which of these are already included in our collected records by county, but in the meantime I've added Jill's complete file to the page Sources -> General since it covers several counties. - Parish records for the City of London and for Middlesex, provided by Robert Sterry I had made a very slow start on extracting IGI records for London, but now Robert has done the lot in his usual methodical fashion! These files are linked to new pages for London and Middlesex, under "Sources" I've also added the corresponding 1901 census extracts to these pages. If you have other material to enrich these pages please don't hesitate to provide it! You'll find links to the new material on the "What's New" page. Many thanks to Jill and Robert for these valuabe additions to our Lovelock collection! James PS A beautiful warm sunny weekend in Grenoble - just right for preparing a patch of my lawn for sowing!

    3. Ooops! What I should of course have added to the message below is that this provides an explanation for the two Lovelock households in Ecclesfield in the 1901 Census. Elijah's death occurred in the Oct-Dec quarter of 1896 in the Wortley RD (which includes Ecclesfield), according to FreeBMD. Reference is 9c 191. I have had an email from a grandson of Charles who lists his birthplace as Sparshot where the family was living in the 1851 and 1871 cencuses.Charles married May Jane Peaple and they lived at Haydon Farm Haydon Rodbourne Cheney Wilts. Isnt it funny how this family keeps jumping from Berks to Wilts. James and his wife Jane were from Berks but their first 4 children were born in Crudwell parish Wilts and their last 2 in Hyde End Shinfield Berks. As they were all agricultural labourers you think they would have stayed on the same farms. 3. Hello David, This family is part of the Lieflock line and you'll find them on page 24 of the PDF file linked to the page Trees and Fragments -> Wilts Trees and Fragments -> Lieflock Line. However, we didn't have the details of Charlotte's parents which you found in the 1881 census, so this is a welcome addition. Henry and Charlotte had one other child, Thomas, bap 3 Sep 1876 WR, so its strange that he wasn't on the census with Mum and siblings. Some of my data for this family has Graham's name attached to it so maybe he has more info.
