    3. The South Bucks Express has a feature every week entitled Pages in history where they reproduse stories from earlier editions. The following appeared in the paper published on 7th December 1878: " Four women were charged with giving false information to pawnbrokers when pledging articles. John Lovelock, a bricklayer living in Church Street, Windsor found it necessary to caution local brokers against taking articles from his wife. She is in the habit of pawning everything she can get her hands on to obtain money for drink, he said. Mr Lovelock discovered his wife had got women ( including those charged ) to pledge things on her behalf and give false information. The women were all given the choice of a fine or imprisonment if unable to pay." Have a great weekend. John Lovelock of Hedgerley Bucks!

    3. Our big event is just over 6 months away and we have received good publicity in UK Family History Magazines. Practical Family History and Family Tree Magazine have included details in their Diary Dates and Letters pages and Family History Monthly included an article captioned Lovelocks United! We have also received good coverage in Wiltshire Newspapers and several readers have contacted us. The programme is taking shape with the news that Graham Lovelock ( a member of the Planning Team ) will give us a presentation on the early Lovelock families in East Wiltshire before we venture over the County Boundary in coaches in the afternoon to see the ancestral locations in Lovelock Country. For the benefit of New Listers details of the event are on the Lovelock Web Site ( address below ) or from Janet and Jeremy Lovelock E Mail jlovelock@tesco.net Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and Best Wishes for the New Year. 1. Middlesex 1851 census extracts
    2. James Loveluck
    3. Hello all, I've added to the Web pages the Lovelock records from the 1851 census for Middlesex. These were extracted by Helen Norton and compiled by Robert Sterry - many thanks to both! The collections of parish records, census records, etc. are becoming a very valuable resource, and I'd like to encourage everyone to provide any additions whenever they have the opportunity. Even if you have only a few bits of data which are not already present on the Web pages, please don't hesitate to send them to me, so that we can make the collections as complete as possible. Regards, James

    1. Updates to the Web pages
    2. James Loveluck
    3. Hello all, I've added to the Web pages a number of new or updated files provided by Robert - some of them were provided several weeks ago, so my apologies for taking so long to make them available. Here are the details taken from the"What's New" page: * 24-Nov-03: Added or updated the following material, all provided by Robert Sterry Oct/Nov 2003: o Added a page for Surrey Lovelock records, which includes Lovelock extracts from parish records and Surrey poor laws. There is also a link to the 1901 census extract for Surrey which were already available o Updated the index of wills on the Lovelock PCC Wills page Note from Robert: I just received the FRC newsletter from London and they noted that all the PCC Wills up until 1858 have now been digitised. This project has been in progress for some time and it is excellent that it is now complete. Copies of any Wills can be downloaded for three pounds - which is very reasonable. So I took the opportunity of updating the index on the Lovelock PCC Wills page that I researched ages ago. o Updated versions of the following files: + Lovelocks in Middlesex by Parish, additional entries from Boyd's marriage index and data from Jill Fleming's research + Lovelocks in London by Parish, additional entries from Boyd's marriage index + Lovelocks in Hampshireby Parish, additional entries from Jill Fleming's research + Lovelocks in Berkshire by Parish, additional entries from Jill Fleming's research Regards, James

    1. 1891 Census
    2. John Lovelock
    3. I am trying to trace the whereabouts in 1891 of my Great Grandfather George William Lovelock who was born in Watlington Oxfordshire in October 1846 and my Grandfather William George born in Yateley Hampshire in January 1873. In the Census of 1881 they were both living in Reading Berkshire. George William was living in Henley-on-Thames Oxfordshire in 1901 but I have not traced the location of William George at this census. I understand that 1891 Census Records are available in the UK Census Collection on the ancestry.com web site. If any Lovelock Listers are registered to access this site I would be grateful they could carry out a search for me. Thank you John Lovelock Hedgerley Buckinghamshire UK

    1. Census records added to Web pages
    2. James Loveluck
    3. Hello all, Long ago, Graham Lovelock (the UK one!) provided me with an extensive set of Lovelock census extracts. I finally got around to adding most of these records to the Web pages, as follows: 12-Nov-03: Added 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 census data for * Wiltshire <wilts-records.htm#census> * Hampshire <hants-records.htm#census> * Berkshire <berks-records.htm#census> Together with 1881 census data for London <london-records.htm> Graham also provided data from the 1891 census, but there was already some data on the Web pages so I didn't copy this, although I need to check there are no differences with Graham's more recent data. There are also a few more records which I haven't yet copied, as follows: 1851 London (1 record) 1881 Bucks, Kent, Staffs, Surrey and Yorks. Finally, there were already some files containing census records which overlap with some of the new ones (for example, Ben Skeates had provided data for Wootton Rivers, Wilts for 1841-1891). When I find the time I'll try to merge such files together. My apologies to Graham for taking so long to add this data to the Web pages! James

    1. Lovelocks Alive 2004 - Update November 03
    2. John Lovelock
    3. Remember remember the 5th of November Gunpowder Treason and Plot. It was 398 years ago today that Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the Palace of Westminster and research published today by the University of Wales calculates that if he succeeded large parts of Central London would have been flattened. Enough gunpowder was under the House of Lords to demolish it 25 times over. I am pleased to announce that James Loveluck and Robert Sterry have kindly offered to give a presentation in the morning on how the circle of Lovelock Family Historians has built up over the past 30 years to share research, make contact with relatives and develop the wonderful resources we now have access to on the Lovelock Web Site. There will also be a forum for exchanging ideas for progressing this research. The Event has been publicised in Wiltshire newspapers and a number of Lovelock families from Swindon, Leamington and Devizes have contacted us. Notices are also appearing in Family History Society Journals and hopefully will appear in national Magazines next month. A reminder that further details and a booking form are on the Lovelock Web Site or available from Janet and Jeremy Lovelock E Mail jlovelock@tesco.net Best Wishes John Lovelock Hedgerley Buckinghamshire UK

    1. Kingsclere Baptisms on Lovelock Website
    2. John Lewis
    3. I think there is a small error in the listing of baptisms for Kingsclere St. Mary. The relevant entry says: 1715 Aug 28 ___(?) s. Robt Lovelock and Maria ('Mary' instead of 'Maria' in modern transcript) Looking carefully at the fiche PR4/3 I can see no evidence for the 's.' in the transcribed entry. The entry is 'blank where name should be' Robt et Maria Lovelock bapt 28 die (August 1715) the gender is indicated in entries before and after as 'fils' or 'filia' so there can be no doubt as to whether it should be son or dau. In this case I think the entry possibly refers to a dau. Mary for whom there is a burial on 25 Jul 1716. However the burial entry on fiche PR5/1 has no clue as to parents or age of Mary so I could be wrong. There is another Mary born to Robert & Mary in 1820. I would like to be wrong in thinking the 1715 baptism refers to a Mary as the Francis Lovelock (see Kingsclere fragment) I have as born possibly in 1820 would fit neatly into this family at this point. Up to now I have found no baptism for him. -- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and GeneWeb genealogy software

This enabled me to find all ten children of this pair who were baptised in Swallowfield and Elizabeth's only sibling Martin, ie the two names listed above. > Hampshire Lovelocks > Hartley Wespall, > There is one baptism in the IGI: > 1780 Oct 22 John s. Incidentally I do have the Martin Lovelock who was a son of ERK Lovelock & Violet May Occomore. I have a small interest in the Occomore family and my grandmother's third marriage was to a John (Jack) Hart who had previously been married to Violet May's aunt, Agnes Jane Occomore. (Violet May's mother was an Lovelock as well) My 'Heckfield' Lovelock family now looks like Martin & Anne ? o Elizabeth ca 1696 &1716 Jonathon Lewington ca 1696 o Martin ca 1699 &1727 Elizabeth Turner o Martin ca 1728 &1751 Elizabeth Poulter o Martin ca 1752-1814 &1774 Mary Heath ca 1756-1818 o Martin ca 1774 o Mary ca 1778 o John ca 1780 o Elizabeth ca 1784 o Martha ca 1787 o William 1790-1790 o Sarah ca 1793 o Elizabeth ca 1754 o Martha ca 1758 o Martha ca 1732-1734 o Elizabeth ca 1734 o John ca 1736 o Martha ca 1738 o Ann ca 1740 Of these I have no baptism for Martin born about 1752 only an age at death which gives the approx dob, so I have no evidence for making Martin a son of Martin & Elizabeth Poulter but he does fit into the pattern if I do. Similarly I have a burial date for William in 1790 which says son of Martin & Mary but there is no baptism date so I have placed him in the gap between Martha & Sarah. HBI has several possible burial dates for this 'Heckfield' family which I have yet to fit in. I really need to visit Hants RO to look at the Parish register fiche to confirm this hypothetical tree. Where the families were actually living and occupations of fathers should help in this respect. -- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and GeneWeb genealogy software

    1. Lovelocks in Kingsclere
    2. John Lewis
    3. I have been following up on the Kingsclere Lovelock twiglet I submitted recently and as a result have several queries. I had for some time in my Kingsclere database the marriage of a Mary Ann Lovelock to Henry Twitchin on 23 September 1861, at Shaw. This information had been given me by a Twitchin researcher but there is no sign of this marriage on the Lovelock website. Nor is there a baptism of a Mary Ann Lovelock in Shaw who could fit the bill but there was a James & Mary Lovelock recorded at Wash Common in 1851 Census who had 3 children recorded as born in Shaw, Clara about 1835, Elizabeth ca '38 and James ca '41. Could Mary Ann be another child? So far I haven't found any record of her or Henry Twitchin in the 1851 Census. James, 72 formerly a farmer, is said to be born in Speen and Mary 52 in Hungerford. This could be the James who married Mary Pike in Hungerford on 22 Jan 1827 and who was baptised 2 June 1778 to Thomas Lovelock and Ann (Crocker) who was possibly a son of Thomas & Elizabeth (Messenger) Based on info on the website, I have put together a nice little twig showing descendants of Thomas & Elizabeth. Those extracts of Thomas' & Noah's wills proved very helpful but I'd like to know if anyone else has researched this Speen/Shaw/Thatcham/Burghclere family in detail and can confirm my ideas. Going back to Kingsclere I had a Phoebe Lovelock who married John Benwell at St. Mary, Kingsclere on 22 July 1790. I can find no trace of a Phoebe being baptised in Kingsclere so could she be the Phebe bapt. on 9 Jul 1769 to Noah & Ann at St. Mary, Thatcham? Where does Noah fit into the 'Speen' family? Any info that can help me confirm this will be welcome. -- John Lewis

    3. I have lots of Lovelock queries resulting from browsing the mass of information on the Lovelock website but for this email will keep it to one query! I am descended directly from the Martin & Anne Lovelock who had two children baptised at All Saints, Swallowfield namely Elizabeth bapt. 22 Nov 1696 and Martin bapt. 26 Nov 1699. Elizabeth married Jonathon Lewington and it is from this marriage I can claim descent. Martin (2), a fairly uncommon forename among the Lovelock families, married (I think) Elizabeth TURNER in Heckfield in 1727 and had several children, including another Martin in 1728. It looks like Martin (3) married Elizabeth POULTER in Winchfield in 1751 and had Martin (4) in 1752 who in turn produced a Martin (5) in 1775 following marriage to Mary HEATH at Heckfield in 1774. There are no further Martin Lovelocks to be found in the baptism records on the Lovelock website but I am wondering if anyone else has an interest in this branch and can (a) confirm my possible tree above and (b) add to the family line TIA -- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and GeneWeb genealogy software

    3. Hi Everyone - I thought that it is about time that someone lend some moral support to Graham Lovelock's claim that the ALL BLACKS will indeed win the World Rugby Cup! My name is Brent Lovelock - I am also from New Zealand - but way down south in Dunedin (the "Edinburgh of the south") I am related to Graham Lovelock as we share a great-great-grandfather Isaac William Lovelock - from Kent, as Graham mentioned in his message a few days ago. I teach at the University of Otago, am married with 3 kids (15, 10, 5), and enjoy tramping, camping, hunting, photography and gardening. We will be venturing over to the UK next year, but sadly not in time for the Lovelock reunion. I am on sabbatical from July to December, and we hope to stay with my brother who has a place in Wigtown, up in Scotland. It would be nice to meet some Lovelocks (especially some Kent ones - if there are any left behind!) while we are over there. If anyone is interested, I can help fill out the NZ end of what happenned to the Kent Lovelocks. I also have a cousin who I think has a reasonably complete family tree. Anyway, nice to meet all of you. Regards Brent Lovelock Dr Brent Lovelock Department of Tourism University of Otago PO Box 56 DUNEDIN Ph (03) 479-8069 or 479-8520 (sec.) 3. Hello all, Two minor bits of informaiton: 1. The "moonrakers" Web site is a useful and well organised site for Wiltshire family history: http://www.moonrakers.org.uk/ I recently arranged to have a link to the Lovelock Web site added to the "Wiltshire Families" page, together with a short description. 2. I picked up on the Glamorgan mailing list this very useful link to "historical directories" http://www.historicaldirectories.org/ which includes scanned (and indexed!) pages from a fairly large number of trade directories (Kelly's, Pigots, Post Office, etc.) They're graduall building up a digital library of these directories from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. There were 350 hits for Lovelocks! Regards, James

    3. Hello Graham, Welcome to the Lovelock list! I don't know how we're going to manage with two Graham Lovelocks - adding the "of Wiltshire" or "of New Zealand" qualifier is a bit long winded! I don't have anything to add to the replies from Robert and Helen to your question about the biblical names, but I can answer a specific question you posed about the number of subscribers to the Lovelock list - today it stands at 61, which is a surprisingly large number for what, as Robert pointed out, is not a very common name.
