I recently checked the LDS film of the PRs for Southwark Christchurch, Surrey. I was actually looking for a totally different surname but came across these Lovelocks. Two are already in the IGI. Greetings all At the risk of going over old ground, I accidentally came across what appears to be Jack's father in the 1891 census. John E J Lovelock was still single, aged 27, servant, Valet, born St Marks Gloucester to a Mary C Vane(?) Tempest and her family at St George Hanover Square, London. Presumeably this was shortly before he left for New Zealand. Now, checking what we do know on Jack's family, I see that we only know his father was bn abt 1866 in Gloucestershire. I assume no one has got the birth certificate or found the baptism. In which case I'm not sure how we know his grandparents were in fact John Edward Lovelock and Sarah Leach. I also note that no one has apparently searched the parish of St Mark's Gloucester. Unfortunately, the PRs of this parish that appears to have commenced about 1847 do not appear to have been filmed by the Mormons. Anyone feel like a trip to Gloucestershire Record Office? Worth a look I think. Best wishes Robert PS What got me going on this was some old correspondence from a Muriel Lovelock Petersen. Muriel lives in the US. She wrote to me back in 1997 and very kindly sent me a most interesting photocopy of a publication written by her uncle George J Lovelock called 'Memories and A Land of Paradise'. It details his memories of emigrating from Kent in England to a small timber town of Shulie, Nova Scotia, Canada with his family in 1907 and growing up there in fairly primitive conditions. She also included a photocopy from the Shell Guide to New Zealand (1979) of a place there called Lovelock Junction. Any one heard of it? It seems this very remote settlement was the work a Herman Lovelock looking for gold in the 1860s at a time when this Maori controlled area was still war-torn and perilous. The last known inhabitants left in the 1920s. Murial also believed she was connected to Jack Lovelock the Olympic runner. He believed that Jack's father was William Lovelock, her great uncle. As far as I can work out, this William was born abt 1882 at Margate Kent and at some stage moved to New Zealand. However, this is not consistent with what we know of Jack's family origins. ---------------------------------------------- Robert Sterry 9 Baileys Lane, Kurrajong Hills NSW 2758 AUSTRALIA Ph: (61)0245 731805 FAX: (61) 0245731022 Email: [email protected]
Easter greetings to all I thought I'd include the list in these thoughts just in case anyone can add anything. The so-called 'Berkshire Lovelock Line' (the naming convention here perhaps needs rethinking) is mine and John Lovelock's direct line. Based on the research of Gwen Eastment and Janet Hearle many years ago, this line was believed to have descended from a John Lovelock and an Elizabeth Woolfe who were married and baptised children in Reading, Berkshire. However, after some recent careful re-examination of the evidence, John and I now believe this connection is incorrect. I won't go into the detail here but would be very happy to share with anyone interested. John and I (and I expect several others of you out there) now agree that this line descends from John Lovelock and Mary Whitwick who married at Wallingford St Leonards in 1779. From the Wallingford MIs we know that this John was aged 77 when he died in 1817, so he was born abt 1740. His wife Mary Whitwick was born abt 1754 - 14 years his junior. John was 39 when he married Mary, so quite likely that this was in fact a second marriage. We have never found John or Mary's baptism. Interestingly enough, there are now several of us searching for various John Lovelock's baptisms about this time. So in pursuing our own line, perhaps we may help others as well. John has always had an interest in this marriage in nearby Buckinghamshire: Great Marlow Marriages 1773 Sep 26 Martin Lovelock of the parish of Hambleton & Ann Lappeth spinster of this parish. By banns. Wit: John Lovelock because a John Lovelock was a witness. Martin Lovelock and Ann baptised their children at Hambleden between 1774 and 1798. There is a likely baptism for this Martin also in Hambleden in 1748, the son of Thomas Lovelock and Elizabeth. He indeed had a brother John baptised at Hambleden in 1746 who might have been the witness to his marriage. This John could conceivably have been born abt 1740 and later married Mary Whitwick. I therefore looked for any other possible signs of this John baptised in 1746 at Hambleden. However, it was obvious that he was neither married nor buried at Hambleden. However, this burial in Berkshire caught my eye: Bray St Michael Burials 1813-1835(BTs); 1813-1888 (Berkshire Burial Index 2002) 1827 Aug 26 John Lovelock, Marlow, Co Bucks, 84 years Bray appears to be roughly about 8 miles by road from Marlow. The age fits John baptised at Hambleden in 1746. However, there is very suitable John to match this burial who married an Elizabeth Oxlade in 1774 and baptised children at Bray between 1775 and 1793. This is therefore not likely to be the same John who married Mary Whitwick as they were also baptising children between 1779 and 1793. I then looked around for any other suitable John L's bn abt 1740 in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire. We have done this exercise many time before but I keep hoping it will turn up a new lead. Reading, St Mary Baptisms 1538 -1812 [PRs] (Note: See Woolfe baptisms at bottom of page) 1739 Jul 2 John the Base born child of John Lovelock & Elizabeth Woolfe [The one that was previously thought to be correct] Bishops Cannings Baptisms 1746 Nov 1 John LOVELACK Father: Thomas LOVELACK Mother: Jane [However, this John is already placed in the Lyneham tree] Easton Royal Baptisms 1580 -1871 1739 Dec 25 John s of Richerd Liflok and Elisebeth his wife bp December 25 [But this John is already placed on the Lieflock tree] Ramsbury Baptisms 1678-1922 1739 Oct 21 John son of Thomas & Mary Lovelock [This is possible but at least 40 miles by road to Wallingford. Already placed in Wroughton/Tidcombe tree but no descendants shown.] It's of course quite possible that the John who married Mary Whitwick was baptised 50 miles from where he married. Just harder to prove. Leaving aside the ones we know about, are there any John Lovelocks born abt 1740 that we have yet to discover? Not all parishes have yet been searched in Wiltshire and Berkshire. But the majority have been searched in Oxfordshire and (I think) also in Buckinghamshire. Other counties are of course always possible but less likely. So in an endeavour to come up with a possible search strategy for locating the elusive baptism of John Lovelock abt 1740, I suggest that we re-examine the evidence for those identified above as possible candidates. If that proves negative, we check to see if there are any parishes not yet searched within a certain circumference of Wallingford, say 20 miles, and search any identified. One final thought is that, assuming the baptism is lost - and we need to remember that this is always a possiblity - can we find a suitable first marriage - assuming John who married Mary Whitwick married twice - for a John Lovelock say between 1760 and 1779 in Berkshire, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire or Buckinghamshire? Given the amount of effort that has been devoted to searching and identifying the various John Lovelocks born about 1740, a catalogue of likely culprits is an excellent idea Robert! I found two more candidates: Etchilhampton 1743 Apr 17 John s. Abra & Anne Lovelock Currently placed on the Lyneham Line, but we don't have a marriage or burial for him. Wroughton 1740 Apr 24 John Lovelock, s John & Elizabeth However, there is a burial at Wroughton which is may be this John L: 1741/42 Mar 18 John Lovelock but this could be another John since no age is given. Here are some more 'tantalising thoughts', Robert and others. Anne Percy might have some connection with an unreprieved criminal. (In fact he died in a fire fight resisting arrest.) This was Thomas Percy, a poor relation of the Earl of Northumberland's family (not Duke; sorry, that was a later creation). This Thomas was one of the Catholics involved in the Gunpowder Plot, a man of tempetuous nature. He abandoned his first wife Martha (née Wright, a sister of two other plotters) 'mean and poor' in Holborn, with a son (Robert) and two daughters. There's an outside possibility, I suppose, that it was his g-g'daughter that Richard Lovelock married in Southwark in 1690. There's a much more nebulous link to the Percy family too. The last direct female relative of the Earls married into the Seymour family at much the same time as Richard married Anne (1682). It was her g'daughter that Sir Hugh Smithson married in 1740 before changing his name to Percy, inheriting the family property and being created Duke in 1766. And Wm Lovelock was forester to the Seymours 3 centuries before. Wouldn't it be nice if there were both the micocosmic and well as the macrocosmic link? Hello John and Listers The Henry Lovelock in Brentford Middlesex was baptised at Hambleden Bucks on the 10th June 1787 - son of Martin Lovelock and Ann LAPPETH who were married 26 September 1773 at Great Marlow Bucks. Martin was from Hambleden parish. I am intrigued by a witness at this Wedding - a certain John Lovelock! It is possible that this John was my GGGG Grandfather who married Mary WHITWICK at Wallingford in 1779. However apart from this parish entry both Robert Sterry and myself have been unable, to date, to find a record of his birth in this locality. The Martin Lovelock of Chertsey Surrey died shortly after the 1861 Census was taken as the following entry appears in the National probaste Calendars: Probate Proved 8 May 1861 Martin late of Chertsey Surrey Sawyer died 14th April 1861. Guys, Following the discussion on London Lovelocks with interest. I was looking for another name at the time but the following site yielded several responses to the name Lovelock. I only tried the 'correct' spelling so there could be more. http://www.british-history.ac.uk/results.asp?query1=Lovelock These are the hits for the "four shilling in the pound aid" (tax) in 1693-1694. From the details, it looks like they were well-off individuals. Derek Keene, Peter Earle, Craig Spence and Janet Barnes (1992) It is interesting that Lovelocks appear north of Andover. It was an area of very low (relative to other parts of Southern England) population density and still is. Several families settled in the area to escape the Plague of London. Hence the hamlet in the area being called Little London. I don't know if the Lovelocks were among them or had migrated in from Wiltshire, Berks or the Kingsclere area of Hampshire which John Lewis' website indicates had Lovelocks clocking BMDs at St Mary's Kingsclere in the mid-16th century. Given the area north of Andover was heavily forested (Chute Forest) settlers being relatives of the Lovelocks of Savernake Forest is not impossible. Greetings Yann. There was indeed quite a Lovelock presence in London, Middlesex and Surrey well before 1700. Here's a few samples for the list's consideration. Great, Robert! 1580, and on the Surrey bank of the Thames at that. That's taken the story back to the 16th C. As you say, there's a lot more research to be done on the family in the capital. Some of the strange spellings may well reflect the fact that those registered did not have the London accent (whereas Lovelacke strikes me as very Cockney!) But let me direct your attention particularly to the marriage in 1690 between Richard Lovelock and Anne Percy. Percy is the family name of the Dukes of Northumberland, one of the most powerful in the land, and it's of Norman origin. Were there high flyers in the family back then? And do these records of your say what was the occupation of the Lovelocks concerned? Best wishes, Yann ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Sterry" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, March 06, 2005 5:48 AM Subject: RE: Lovelock convicts (and apprentices) > Greetings Yann. One thing that intrigues me is that Sue has extended our knowledge of a Lovelock presence in London and Surrey back into the 17th century. Despite the 13th C. Huntingdon 'Lovelocker', I'd assumed the family was primarily of Wiltshire origin (a forester in Savernake is attested in the 15th C.). Now I'm left wondering whether the Hampshire Lovelocks are the middle link of the family moving west instead of east. Any comments? Spurred on by the recent correspondence on Lovelock convicts, i've done a bit of research and come up with the following list of some more Lovelocks who went west: 18 August 1662. Home counties prisoners reprieved to be transported to Barbados. Surrey: Robert Joy of St. Saviour, Southwark; Rowland Rayner of Buckland; William Lovelock of St. George, Southwark; James Singleton and Margaret Wright, spinster, of St. Olave, Southwark; 4 July 1683. The following apprenticed in Middlesex: Joyce Bibbsell of Hatfield, [Hertfordshire], aged 21, to Charles Bartholomew, 4 years Virginia; Elizabeth Lovelock, aged 21, to Michael Staples, 5 years Maryland. (GLRO: MR/E/593). 20-23 July 1728. The following bound to William Cash for Pennsylvania: William Reynolds of King's Parish, Ireland, aged 16, to serve 7 years; John Butterfield of St. Clement Danes, Middlesex, aged 16, to serve 4 years; Daniel Lovelock of St. Botolph Aldgate, London, aged 16, to serve 7 years with the consent of his father Nicholas L.; John Clement of St. Giles in the Fields, Middlesex, aged 19. (CLRO: ATSM/43-46). Lovelock, Abraham. Reprieved for transportation 14 yrs March Transportation Bond to Virginia November 1748. Wiltshire. Lovelock, John. Sentenced to transportation stealing at Sandleford Summer 1756; found at large Summer 1758 & ordered to Hampshire for trial on capital charge. Berkshire. Lovelock, Nathaniel. Sentenced to transportation April 1742. Hampshire. Lovelock, William of St. George Southwark. Reprieved for transportation for Barbados August 1662. Surrey. This is taken from Peter Wilson Coldham's "The Complete Book of Emigrants" (four volumes) and "The Complete Book of Emigrants in Bondage" and supplement. Does anyone lay claim to any of these (other than Abraham, from the Lyneham line)? Best wishes Sue
John Lewis The RGOBMD.doc file is on James's site - just put lovelock tasmania into Google and it comes up on the first page. James & John Lewis Maybe you could add deaths after 1900 to say 1950 from my last version you have? Also from this you could add to/correct your Tasmania tree. From the 1861 census we now know Henry (No 1) LovelUck was b Hambleden and from Lovelocks in Bucks it seems certain his parents were Martin & Ann LovelOck & he was born 1787 - he died 1871 aged 84 not 1865. This Henry was presumably the witness to the will of Thomas LU 1839 - he was a coachman. I imagine the George Loveluck, also a coachman (when he died 1863), victualler of "Red Lion" in 1861 aged 41 b St Geo H Sq, so b ~1820 was a son of Henry. A Martin m 9/50 at Kensington & 6/55 St Geo H Sq Another Martin d 6/1854 at Marylebone Seems the Martin who d 3/1867 at Kensington was son of Thomas & Mary Lovelock b 1819 Shaw Lovelucks/O You don't seem to have a copy of the will of Thomas L late of Shaw. I add it with some other notes of the BT's. I copied these early 80's, but know not where - might have been Trowbridge or Devizes? Not Berks! A Thomas Lovelock was ch warden at least 1768-71 (I copied his clear signature on the docs "Thos Lovelock" definitely "O") and 1778-81, 83-84, 86-87. 1861 Census online Some time ago Ancestry.com (see below) flagged its intention to place online indexed images from the 1861 Census of England & Wales. That's still their intention, but they've been upstaged by www.1837online.com, which placed indexed images for London, Middlesex, Surrey and Kent online earlier this month. Images are on a "pay per view" basis, with 3 "units" being required to view per transcript or image. Units may be purchased in minimum quantities of 55 for £5, which retain validity for 45 days. Discounts apply for purchases £10 and over, and validity lengthens. For example, £60 buys 891 units (a 25% discount) and validity extends to 365 days. Hello all, I've added to the Web site a variant on the "Ropley, Crondall, Dogmersfield (Hants)" tree, together with an additional fragment which may link into this tree. Both were provided by Mike & Alison Turner, and there are some explanatory notes in the files. The files are linked to the "Hampshire Family Trees & Fragments" page: http://perso.numericable.fr/~lovjames/family-history/lovelock/hants-frags.html and as usual there are also links on the "What's New" page. Mike & Alison's variant includes some additional material (in particular showing how the Turner branch connects to this tree) and also some interesting differences from the previous version from Roger & Mary Perry. Many thanks to Mike & Alison for their contributions. James

I know that all three above are in same household. Also at Maddington Wilts was a Frank Lovelock b.1875 Elston Wilts in a different household. Thats the most info I can get for free.
