Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late John David Schenck Carpenter and Zoie Elam Lattimore Carpenter. She was a homemaker and an active member of New Bethel Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, James "Jim" Weldon Southard; brothers, John and Hugh Car-penter; and sisters, Jennie Lovelace, Louise Peeler, Meredith Newman and Ruby Mae "Tute" Carpenter. Mrs. Southard is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law; Larry and Ita Southard of Cork, Ireland, Tim and Anne Southard of Shelby and Terrell and Dinah Southard of Rock Hill, S.C.; sister, Nell Carpenter of Lawndale; grandchildren, Dara Williams and husband, Joey, of Columbia, S.C. and Jacob Southard of Houston, Texas; great-grandchildren, Quinton Southard, Mason Southard and Ward Williams.
