During the civil war if one side of the family switched political views they would change the spelling to seperate themselves politically. My Mother was Loveless as a child and then they switched back to Lovelace later on. My Grandmother always pronounced the name as Loveless. There was also the possibility that the spelling was changed because some of them couldn't read or write very well.
