Description: Wouldn't Marry Her. J. M. LOVELACE, a Bank Clerk, Arrested for Breach of Promise. Date: April 21 1886 Newspaper published in: St. Louis, MO New York, April 21. Deputy Sheriff FITZGERALD arrested yesterday J. M. LOVELACE, a young man in the employ of the commercial Bank of this city, on an order issued by Justice ANDREWS in the suit of Miss Anna M. PROWSE, who claims $25,000 damages for alleged breach of promise and seduction. Miss PROWSE avers in her affidavit, that she met LOVELACE in 188_ in Montreal, where they both lived. The alleged offense was committed in 1885. LOVELACE, she says, left Montreal and came to New York and sent for her to follow him. She came here and lived with him as his wife in Clinton place. In April, 188_, she went to the Coleman House with her father and demanded of LOVELACE that he should fulfill his promise of marriage, whereupon LOVELACE refused, and said he would not marry a woman with less than $100,000. LOVELACE was sent to Ludlow Street Jail in default of $5,000 bail. [Greg's note: I did a brief search and did find a James M. Lovelace listed in New York City in the 1920 census, age 64. He was a lodger in an apartment building. I didn't search any further, but also looked for Anna Prowse, of which there are tons on Ancestry.com. If anyone wants to continue the search, please feel free and post results to the list.]
