This is how is was looking at the spelling issue, I agree it was more lack of knowing what was correct by officials and just guessing or a literacy situation. When someone could not read or write the official they were working with just went by how it sounded. In my area here in Indiana many people pronounce the name Campbell as "Camel" just imagine what that caused in writing out a family name. Sheila
