The claim of Cherokee blood came from Nancy Jane Townsend Loveless who married Abner Powell Loveless. Nancy Jane was the daughter of Edward "Ned" Townsend and Anna Taylor Townsend. Anna was supposedly the daughter of Rutha and "Chief" Taylor. Abner Powell Loveless was the son of Barton and Isabelle Johnson Loveless. There were many Indian claims filed, but the descendants could not prove their ancestry. The reason given was the ancestors were never enrolled on any of the Cherokee Indian Rolls.
