I have alfred b davis born in 1843 and living with allen m davis and a sister mariah, born 1845. There is also Ellen, age 1, Margaret, age 30 (margaret cradick houston) and three of her children from earlier marriage, along with her mother. They are living in Greene County, Il. This is the 1850 census. Elam, born abt 1839 was listed in the same census, was with William Jackson and Maria Hinton Davis, the brother and sister-in-law of Allen Morrow Davis. Elam was 11 years old. This Davis family lived east of White Hall, Greene Co, Ill. Living next door was Arthur Davis, another brother of the Davis men. The Elam you found living with Price and Margaret Lovelace was listed as Elam Lovelace was 3 yr old in the 1850 census. Mysteriously there was an Elvira Davis age 11, listed at that address. I have no record of an Elvira, although you said there was an Elvira listed in Alfred's civil war record. I researched the Margaret Lovelace listed with Price Lovelace and she was born in Indiana and later married a William Wells. Elam Davis lists his mother as being born in North Carolina. In the 1860 census for Greene Co, Illinois there is an Elon Davis, age 22, living with Arthur Davis. Another spelling for Elam was Elon. I can't find Allen M Davis in 1860 but in 1880 He and Margaret are living very close to Elam Davis in Sangamon Co. Illinois. That is about 50 miles away from Greene Co. The dates for this Elam coincide with the Elam Davis born in 1839 so I fell comfortable that this is the same Allen M Davis. I have not seen Elam's death record so am curious about the Sidney A Davis name. I think this is what happened - Allen Morrow Davis married someone from North Carolina. He came to Illinois with his parents and a wife. They were the parents of Elam, Alfred, and Mariah - and possibly others as the family bible listed. It's possible his first wife was a Sarah Lovelace, but one from North Carolina. She must have died and then he married Margaret C Houston in 1848. I am pretty sure that Allen Morrow Davis and Allen M Davis are the same person. The dates seem to support that. I have a lot of information about the rest of the Davis brothers who came to Illinois with their parents, James Davis Sr. and Jane Morrow Davis - but now I will do more research about Allen Morrow Davis. I grew up in White Hall, Illinois and plan to go to the library there to see if there is more information I can use. (my sister and I still have the farm where William Jackson and Mariah Hinton Davis lived and where Elam was in 1850) Let me know what you think about this myriad of information!
