    1. [LL] Two Archibald LOVELACEs b. abt. 1809 - numerous discrepancies
    2. Jeff Sengstack
    3. Hello, I am researching the LOVELACE line and have run into some discrepancies with Lovelace family trees I've seen posted on Ancestry.com and messages posted here. What I am certain about is that the line I'm researching goes back to Lemuel M. LOVELACE b. 1837 (twin brother of Manuel LOVELACE) who married Susan C. GRUNDY. Where things fall apart is with Lemuel's father, Archibald LOVELACE. An 1850 census (I have a JPG file, but here is a link to the text: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/lovelace/1998-08/0903471394) notes that Archibald was married to Mary M. What I don't know, is who are Archibald's parents (I also am not certain of who Mary M. is...but that's another story). -- Are Archibald's parents Thomas LOVELACE (b. 1772) and Amelia Permela DYSON (b. 1773)?. An extensive tree posted by Tami Bearden (http://www.fortunecity.com/millenium/rockbridge/597/bearden/lovelace.htm) says they are and that Mary M. was Archibald's second wife. -- Are Archibald's parents Andrew LOVELACE b. Feb 3 1776 and Rebecca HOLEMAN. A 1998 posting from Gary W. Lovelace says this is the case (http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/lovelace/1998-05/0896362101) A posting from Jack Lovelace (http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/lovelace/2004-09/1095134675) says essentially the same thing. Jack adds that Mary M. is Mary M. PURDOM (I think PURDOM was the last name of Mary's third husband -- I think her maiden name might have been ASHLEY). -- Finally, is it possible that researchers have mixed up the two sets of Archibald's parents? Perhaps they've mistakenly placed the Archibald (father of Lemuel) with the wrong set of parents? Handwritten records from Inez LOVELACE (Lemuel's daughter) make references to uncles (brothers of Archibald) from the union of Andrew LOVELACE (b. 1776) and Rebecca HOLEMAN (b. 1775). But the Archibald from those parents married Nancy Harmon (not Mary M). In the end, perhaps the way to identify the Archibald LOVELACEs born between 1808-1811 is to look for spouses. Here are all the spouses I've found for the two Archibald LOVELACEs discussed here. There are several combinations and permutations of spousal arrangements. Nancy HARMAN Jean ERWIN Nancy HOLEMAN Mary M. Mary PURDOM Delila A. Della Hannah WHEELER Mary ASHLEY Bottom line, I guess, is how strong is the documentation that connects the two Archibald LOVELACEs with their respective parents? And who were their respective spouses (or sets of spouses)? Thanks to whomever can figure this out. Jeff Sengstack

    2. Jack D. Lovelace
    3. Jeff, As you are aware, Lemuel M. Lovelace appears on the 1850 census of McCracken County, Kentucky in the household of Archibald Lovelace and his wife Mary M. Lovelace. Archibald's age is given as 42 [born 1807-1808]. Mary's age is given as 39 [born 1810-1811]. Archibald is found on the 1860 census of McCracken County, Kentucky, where he is listed as Archie Loveless and his wife is listed as Mary A. Loveless. Archibald's age is given as 52 [born 1807-1808]. Mary's age is given as 50 [born 1809-1810]. On both the 1850 census and the 1860 census, Archibald is listed as being born in Kentucky and Mary is listed as being born in Tennessee. On the 1870 census for McCracken County, Kentucky, Archibald is listed as Archibald Lovelace, age 62 [born 1807-1808] and born in Kentucky. His wife is listed as Della A. Lovelace, age 38 [born 1831-1832], born in Tennessee. On the 1880 census for McCracken County, Kentucky, Archibald is listed as Archibald Loveace, age 72 [born 1807-1808], born in Kentucky. His wife is listed as Delila A. Loveace, age 49 [born 1830-1831], born in Tennessee. There is a marriage record in Alexander County, Illinois for an Archibald Lovelace and Polly M. Ashley, dated 13 Aug 1829. If you look at a map of the United States that identifies counties, you will see that Alexander County, Illinois is just across the Ohio River from McCracken County, Kentucky. As you are aware Polly is a nickname for Mary. Mary married Archibald when she was 19 years of age. She died, still married to Archibald, between 1861 and 1863. I have found no record indicating that she was ever married to anyone else. [At this point in time, I do not know where the name Mary M. Purdom came from. I do not have that name in my database.] There is a marriage record in McCracken County, Kentucky, for Archibald Lovelace and Delia Lovelace, dated 20 Jan 1864. There is a marriage record in Carter County, Tennessee, for David S. Lovelace and Delila Fletecher, on 16 Feb 1848. David and Delila are found on the 1850 and 1860 census for McCracken County, Kentucky. Archibald Lovelace is found on the 1830 and 1840 census for McCracken County, Kentucky. In 1840, his age is given as 30 & under 40 [born 1800-1810]. His wife's age is given as 20 & under 30 [born 1810-1820]. In 1830, Archibald's age is given as 20 & under 30 [born 1800-1810]. His wife's age is given as 20 & under 30 [born 1800-1810]. In 1830, there are actually two Archibald Lovelaces listed. The age of the second Archibald is 50 & under 60. The age of his wife is 40 & under 50. This is Archibald Richard Lovelace, born 28 Jun 1778 in Rowan County, North Carolina, died 1831-1843 in McCracken County, Kentucky, or Ballard County, Kentucky. Archibald Richard was not found on the 1840 census and his wife is listed on the tax records for Ballard County, Kentucky, in 1843. Archibald Richard was married twice. The name of his first wife is not known, but they were married between 1800 and 1807 in Logan County, Kentucky. His second wife was Elizabeth Duposture. They were married 14 Jun 1813 in Butler County, Kentucky. I do not know if Duposture is Elizabeth's maiden name or her married name. In 1810, on the Butler County, Kentucky, census, Archibald Richard has a tick mark for a son of the right age to be Archibald who married Mary Ashley. In 1820, on the Ohio County, Kentucky, census, he does not have a son of the right age. Archibald Richard is the brother of Andrew Lovelace. Both are the sons of Elias Lovelace and Anne Robey, grandsons of JBL and Eleanor Wilcoxen. Andrew is the father of Archibald who married Mary Ashley. Andrew was born 03 Feb 1776 in Rowan County, North Carolina, and died 11 Dec 1863 in Lovelaceville, McCracken County, Kentucky. There is a marriage bond record for the marriage of Andrew Lovelace and Rebecca Holman, dated 06 Oct 1795, in Surry County, North Carolina. Andrew was 19 years of age and Rebecca was also 19 years of age. In 1800, Andrew is found on the tax list for Logan County, Kentucky. In 1808, Andrew is listed as a trustee for the Town of Suffolk in Logan County, Kentucky. In 1810, Butler County, Kentucky was created from Logan County, Kentucky. In 1810, Andrew is listed on the census for Butler County, Kentucky. He has a tick mark for a son of the right age to be Archibald. In 1820, Andrew is listed on the census for Butler County, Kentucky. He has a tick mark for a son of the right age to be Archibald. In 1823, Andrew appears on the tax list for Butler County, Kentucky. In 1830 and 1840, Andrew appears on the census for McCracken County, Kentucky. In 1850 and 1860, Andrew appears on the census for Ballard County, Kentucky. Thomas A. Lovelace (1772-1829) and Amelia Permela Dyson (1777-1829) also had a son named Archibald who was born 28 Mar 1806 in Iredell County, North Carolina. This Archibald died in 1895 in Missouri. Archibald, son of Thomas, married Nancy A. Holman (1809-1867) on 05 Feb 1827 in Rowan County, North Carolina. Archibald, son of Thomas, is found on the 1830 census for Iredell County, North Carolina, and the 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 census for Pettis County, Missouri. In 1842, he was named a Justice of the Peace in Pettis County. Archibald, son of Thomas, married 2nd to Hannah F. Morris on 05 Jul 1868 in Pettis County, Missouri, the widow of Amos H. Wheeler, and 3rd to Lutitia Ferguson some time after 1880. Archibald Lovelace b: May 1861 in Frederick County, Maryland, d: about 1847 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, son of JBL and Eleanor Wilcoxen, married Jean Erwin on 08 Oct 1786 in Rowan County, North Carolina.
