Author: jndhm50 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lovelace/448.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Your response has raised some questions for me. My husband is descended from Alfred Davis, who was born in Greene Co., in 1840. His death record says his father is Allen Davis and his mother was unknown. I searched the 1850 census and found Alfred Davis with Allen M. Davis and Margaret Houston Davis. On line, I found where Allen M. Davis and Margaret Houston were married around 1848. In looking at some Greene County, IL histories, I saw a biography of James Davis and it mentioned his sons, one of whom was Allen Morrow Davis. Is Allen Morrow Davis and Allen M. Davis the same person. So, then I ordered Alfred Davis civil war record. One of the papers was an affidavit from a notary stating he had examined the family bible and it listed the names of Alfred's brothers and sisters - one of the brothers was Elam Davis. After obtaining Elam's death record, it showed his father as Sidney A. Davis and his mother as Sarah Loveless/Lovelace. That is as much info as I have on Sarah Lovelace. Now, I'm wondering if I've been looking at the wrong Allen Davis. You stated Allen Morrow had three children - If Alfred is one of his children, according to Alfred's civil war record and the "family bible", he had Theresa, Elizabeth, Elam, Elvira, and Mary. In one census (can't remember if it was the 1850 or later census, I found Elam living with a Price Lovelace, which could possibly mean the Lovelace and Davis families were related. Let me know what you think. . . Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Price Lovelace was the son of Eleanor Lovelace, who was one of the daughters of Isaac Lovelace. Eleanor came to Illinois at about the time of her brother, James, and sister, Mahala, who was married to Samuel Doyle (they went to Greene Co. in 1829-30). No one has identified the father of Eleanor's children. All these children were born in Rowan, NC, and moved to Kentucky before going to IL. Isaac Lovelace had a brother, named James, who had a daughter named Sarah (born about 1802-I have no other info about her). I have a great deal of info about the Lovelaces-I'm descended from Mahala and Samuel Doyle. See below about James. This article may explain the first name of Elam. History of Clark Co., IL @1883 www.trail.org/clark/history.htmlpage 396"In the year 1822 the settlement was increased by the arrival of James Lovelace, Samuel Elam, Lindy Ashmore, William Ashmore, Martin Graves and Henry Taylor. Lovelace, Elam and the Ashmore's came together and were from Kentucky. They settled on the creek south of Livingston and built small cabins and spent most of their time hunting. When the land was entered they moved away but afterward entered lands on the creek in the south part of the township." There's a huge amount of info in the Lovelace Archives at Rootsweb.
