    3. My grandmother, Pansy Louise Johnston's DNA is uploaded to GedMatch from FTDNA. Her kit is ID F173637. She descends from James Loveless & Linna Hughes. 3. The spreadsheet would also need oldest proven Loveless Ancestor on the list. We have to realize that at every generation up the tree the autosomal DNA may come from a wife rather than the Loveless man. But it would be solid in the Loveless line from the couple down. Do we also want to collect segments that are triangulated up the tree on wives line? For instance, I have a match between Tom and a person who descends from a brother of Mary and Linna Hughes. They have no Loveless in their line, but the data is meaningful to others who descend through Isaac and James. 3. Paul, That is really good - you would need one for each person. I think I'll create one for Tom and one for Bob as the GedMatch kit #s are reported here. I am not sure what Greg will want as a way of tracking everyone, but I could see a spreadsheet with - Kit 1 - Name 1 - Kit 2 - Name 2 - Chromosome - Start Matching Segment - End Matching Segment The question is whether to enter each matching segment once, or twice, reversing kit#s and names so that you can sort and select either way (Think GEDMatch's triangulation report which is basically what we are doing). My question to Greg: Are you going to build the spreadsheet yourself and publish it from time to time, keep a current version non-editable on Google Docs or some other place - or make it editable where we each add our own matches. 3. Melissa, I'm on Gedmatch... Kit #T116982 I just compared our samples. No matching segments at the default cutoff (7 cM) No matching segments at 5 cM At a cutoff of 3 cM, two small segment matches: - 3.6 cM on CHR 2 (144,962,285 to 150,382,135), 835 SNPs - 3.4 cM on CHR 3 (32,401,615 to 36,415,901), 770 SNPs At a cutoff of 1 cM, two more small segments emerge: - 1.3 cM on CHR 6 (31,749,365 to 33,109,749), 1718 SNPs - 2.1 cM on CHR 7 (64,290,271 to 68,687,837), 769 SNPs Including all the matching segments at the 3 cM cutoff, we share a total of 7 cM, which translates to 0.1% of our DNA. Using the 1 cM cutoff, we share a total of 10.4 cM, which translates to 0.15% of our DNA. CAVEAT: According to ISOGG, you should use the 5 Cm CUTOFF. Using that restriction, we don't share *ANY* DNA. Using the 3 cM cutoff (0.1% shared DNA), we come off as 7th-8th cousins (http://www.isogg.org/wiki/Cousin_statistics) There is an excellent discussion of centimorgans (cM) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on the DNAeXplained blog here: https://dna-explained.com/2016/03/30/concepts-centimorgans-snps-and-pickin-c rab/ Peace, Part of the Tree, Greg Peace, Greg Lovelace  Part of the Tree Research Services 683 Edmonds Drive Charleston, SC 29412 greg@part-of-the-tree.com www.part-of-the-tree.com -----Original Message----- From: lovelace-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:lovelace-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Melissa Jones Belur via Sent: Wednesday, June 29, 2016 1:20 AM To: lovelace@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LL] autosomal DNA and GedMatch Hi all, I've been in digest mode for a while. Have been trying to keep up the last few nights, especially with the talk about autosomal DNA and the Newberry Five. My kit number on GedMatch is T022672. I do match Lisa's grandmother's kit in 3 small segments on chromosomes 11 (5.7 cM) and 14 (3.6 cM and 4.0 cM). I don't know how significant these matches are. I'm from the James of Tishomingo (b. 1796 in probably SC) line. I don't match either of the Cates kits that Lenny Darnell posted about. Even more interesting (and perplexing!), I don't match Martha Wallace. I would have expected us to have some matching segments as Martha is also from the James of Tishomingo line. Has anyone else done an autosomal DNA test and ported their results to GedMatch? As for the parentage of James of Tishomingo, I still lean towards William Loveless who was last seen in Laurens County, South Carolina. I can't get past the fact that James is not mentioned in the Loveless - Sadler deed of Jefferson County, Alabama, where John Loveless's wife and heirs sold off his land. 3. Robert Cates is A898171 Tom Cates is M727087 The are first cousins once removed. We suspect that Tom's great grandfather/Bob's GGgrandfater to be a Lovel***. We also have evidence that they are descended from ancestors of Linna and Mary Hughes. 3. Greg, a huge job indeed. Thank you. Would you like me to include in my list people who may not be on this listserve, but have a Lovel*** line in their tree and have provided GEDMatch #s? Do you want to limit what is reported to you to triangulated matches, or all 2-party matches which may or may not be Lovel***? 3. Melissa Third cousins or closer are more likely than not to share DNA. For any two specific fourth cousins or further it is less and less likely that DNA is shared. For sixth cousins, if I remember right, it's about 5% that measurable DNA will be shared. Here is a chart that shows the average amount shared by distance. https://customercare.23andme.com/hc/en-us/articles/202907170-Average-percent-DNA-shared-between-relatives Greg, I agree. Segments less than 7cM are 50% likely to be noise (identical by state or IBS). 50% likely to be identical by descent (IBD). Below 7, it is more likely to be noise. However, even if a segment matches at 3cM it can be determined to be IBD if triangulated. So when I load in 2nd and 3rd cousins, I track at 4cM 400 SNPs and up because if I can show that I match that cousin on that segment, then find someone else who does even if our match is 7cM, the odds are high that it is identical by descent. 3. Hi all, I've been in digest mode for a while. I'd be happy if we can figure out the answer one of these days! --Melissa On Sat, Jun 25, 2016 at 12:00 AM, <lovelace-request@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > > > Message: 29 > Date: Fri, 24 Jun 2016 19:12:06 -0700 > From: Lisa Gorrell <snrylisa@gmail.com> > Subject: Re: [LL] Question... > To: Lenny Darnell <lrdarnell@gmail.com> > Cc: lovelace@rootsweb.com > > > My grandmother's kit is F173637. 3. Jack, I found the following in the archives from 2006. Any chance you have further information on either record? Especially interested to see the text of the Edmund Ward will from 1833. Thank you! --Melissa *From:* "Jack D. 3. I know we have talked about them briefly. I am getting quite a few more distant matches to this couple, the the trees all say he is from Woolwich, Kent, England. They were married in 1777 in KT and he passed in Ohio. I suspect that based on the number of DNA hits that he must somehow be connected to the Newberry Five, but back a generation. A brother or cousin of their father. Any thoughts? Lenny
