Loretta Marie Montoya Montoya, Loretta Marie Loretta Montoya touched our lives and hearts with such happiness, love and the most beautiful smile ever created. On July 4, 2016, our happiness turned to sadness and our hearts became broken, as Loretta passed away from her earthly home, into the loving arms of our Lord Jesus Christ. Loretta fought a valiant fight against an evil cancer, never complaining, never losing her spirit and determination, until she could fight no more. She is our hero. Loretta was born on July 10, 1956, in Las Vegas, New Mexico, to very proud parents, Connie Herrera and Lawrence Tafoya, who survive her. She was a most beautiful bride as she was united in marriage to Bobby C. Montoya, on February 19, 1977. They were just 7 months shy from completing 40 years of marriage. From this union they have three wonderful and loving sons, Christopher, Robert Lee, and Ryan. Loretta was so proud of her family and their accomplishments. There was nothing she wouldn't do for them. Loretta was a 1974 graduate of Robertson High School in Las Vegas, N.M., where she excelled in academics. She was very active in many school activities. Loretta went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts and Master's degree in Social Work, at New Mexico Highlands University. She would retire from Children, Youth and Families Department, after devoting over 30 years of service. To say she was dedicated and hard-working, would be an understatement. She had so much compassion for children and families involved in the system. She believed in fairness and taking every opportunity given, to help families become successful. She believed in those that no one else would believe in. She was a true social worker in every sense of the word. Loretta and her family enjoyed many vacations together, especially during the last ten years. All of them are avid UNM Lobo fans and would attend the Mountain West Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada as a family. With never a dull moment amongst them, Loretta looked forward to this every year. Whether it was paragliding in Mexico, horseback riding in the Bahamas, or zip-lining in Belize, Loretta lived her life to the fullest. She was determined to not let cancer rule her life. Loretta was an excellent and talented seamstress and quilt maker. She always had a project going on. From making prom dresses, banners for schools, making her beautiful quilts for family members and grandchildren, to sewing dresses for children in Haiti, she was always ready to take on something new and challenging. We can only be inspired by her lovely patterns, and vibrant colors she chose, to live our lives with the same passion, commitment, and love that she lived hers. Loretta is preceded in death by her father-in-law, Abelino Montoya Sr., her mother-in-law Lucille Montoya, brother-in- law Fred Montoya, step-father Paul Edwards, and her beloved dog Poker. Surviving Loretta is her loving husband Bobby C. Montoya, of the family home in Rio Rancho, NM; sons, Christopher Montoya and wife Brandie of Albuquerque, NM, Robert Lee Montoya and wife Jami of Ft. Collins, Colorado and Ryan Montoya of Denver, Colorado; Also, her beautiful grandchildren, whom she loved with all of her heart, Cameron, Mason, Mylee and Lucy; sisters, Debbie Pajak and husband Dan of Mesa, Arizona, Christine Duran and husband Martin of Las Vegas, NM, Martha Beiser and husband Doug of Fountain Valley, California; one brother, Larry Tafoya and wife Carly of Rio Rancho, NM; sisters-in-law, Dulia Montoya, Teresa Duran and husband Henry, Bernadette Sena and husband Ben, Katherine Montoya Gallegos, Louisa Montoya, Manuelita Loveless and husband Dewey, Frances Hawksworth and husband Dennis, and Hope Montoya; brothers-in-law, Edward Montoya, David Montoya and wife Lisa, Abelino Montoya Jr. and wife LouElla, Les Montoya, John Montoya and Michael Montoya; her parents, Connie Edwards of Albuquerque, NM and Lawrence Tafoya of Las Vegas, NM; her very special godchildren, Alicia Beiser, Daniel Pajak, and Vanessa Tafoya Pina; Her best friend, Deborah Martinez; and numerous nieces and nephews. Honored to be Loretta's pallbearers are Abelino Montoya Jr., Les Montoya, Daniel Pajak, Paul Beiser, Jordan Marquez and Jaryd Marquez. Honorary pallbearers are Michael Montoya and George Marquez. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Loretta's name to the New Mexico Cancer Center Foundation 4901 Lang Avenue NE Albuquerque, New Mexico 87109. You may also send them to her home address: Robert Carlos Montoya, 1100 Coyote Bush Road NW, Rio Rancho, New Mexico 87114. The Abraham I've been discussing is the earliest one found in MD. There are other Abrahams who come later in the various branches of Lovelace throughout the country. Lou Ann

He is predeceased by his wife Anita Thornton and brothers Leonard and Hulan Thornton. The family thanks his devoted caregiver Pedro Cavillas for his dedicated service. Gradie was a meat cutter in the Margaret Ann Grocery Store, Manatee, when he met the love of his life, Anita Thompson. They married on July 3, 1949 and lived most of their 60 year marriage on Snead Island before she went home to the Lord in 2010. They enjoyed life to the fullest together. They worshipped at Palmetto First Baptist, enjoyed world travel, spent time with family and friends at their Lake Okeechobee cabin, and especially loved their involvement with Tennessee Walking Horse competitions; celebrating their children's accomplishments in the sport. Horses were a passion for him. He loved to ride on cattle drives, or around Snead Island or on the grounds of his home. Gradie began his successful automotive career opening Thornton Motors in Palmetto in 1954. Over the next 50 years he built a dealership group that included Thornton Mazda, Palmetto; Thornton Nissan & Dodge, Venice; and Sarasota Nissan & Jeep, Sarasota. He earned an excellent reputation for integrity and honest business practices. Many sought his counsel in their own businesses. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at 10 AM at First Baptist Church Palmetto, 1020 4th St. W, with the service following at 11 AM. Because of their compassionate assistance to Gradie and the family, in lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Tidewell Hospice, 4151 37th St. E, Palmetto, FL 34221. He had 10 kids. There were tons of these Lovelesses in UT. For example one of his sons had 9 kids by each of two wives and 12 by another. Another son had 14 children, another one had 16 children, one had 9 children and those are just some of them. Point being, almost any Loveless found in Utah Co UT is likely to be a member of this family. James and Clara Jane are just one possibility for Martha's parents. I'm sure they weren't the only ones who had a daughter Martha, but theirs is the one I found and she's the right age. This information that Jack sent calling him Ignatious Jr certainly indicates that there was an older one and probably his father. If that is the case, Basil would have been his brother and if he had children they were not of age. I have some hard copy notes on Ignatious from info I found when I was in MD, but I think those notes are in storage along with a lot of other stuff from when we we had the fire. I know I didn't lose them in the fire, but they are not where I can put my hands on them I need to find them again to see what I had found on Ignatious. I've let the ball drop on him since that time, just too much other going on. Lou Ann ------------------------------ Message: 12 Date: Sun, 3 Jul 2016 14:59:05 -0700 From: "Jack D. You can go back more than 2-3 generations, and you are right, matches can be random rather than definitive. You only make them definitive by triangulating the same segment with people from the same line. If you have three or more that match the same segment (especially if it is bigger than 7cM, then you know they have a common ancestor. If you can identify most recent common ancestry with them and rule out any other common ancestry, it's pretty golden. So for the case of Abraham, the best you could do is find multiple descendants of his that share the same segment. But that wouldn't place him in MD. However, if you could find multiple descendants of his that share a segment and multiple descendants of a MD Lovelace that also share the same segment, then it's a good bet that you have found Abraham's brother, cousin, etc. This is a longshot right now. But maybe as more people get tested and the testing companies refine their tools and give us more tools ourselves. I have been noticing that criteria used in autosomal DNA match searches mentioned in this long conversation have been at 5 or so cMs, which may very well thin out at 3 or 4 generations. I have also seen a useful result to 6 or 7 generations mentioned for 15 cM match searches; this was in a webinar by Lisa Louise Cooke. Don't know if this will help, but I am suggesting adjusting the criteria to see if the results extend further back. Lenny, What about when the segments don't match exactly, but overlap. How does that affect the interpretation? Greg I have found very few that match exactly with three people. You just want one part that overlaps with all three people. 2nd cousins tend to have large segments 35cM or more. So if you find someone that matches on that part of the tree but much higher that has some subset of that match, that works pretty well. If the third cousin has a tree match and DNA match, I am happy with small segments 3-4 cM or so. I have matches I am happy with where the common amount is about 3cM where the 3-way match is all 7cM or more. As we get GEDMatch in from this group, we will start to see these patterns, I'm sure. The autosomal matching methodology of the genetic genealogy establishment is built on a bad foundation. I've used short segment matching from the start and my results have been completely consistent. I have found that the chances of a false matching segment with my regular autosomal parameters of 250 SNP's and 1 cM minimum segment are just about zilch. You still have to triangulate and figure out where the lines intersect in the space-time continuum, but a 1 cM segment works just fine. I've been making connections over 300 years back, while others are just engaged in sophistry about whether a segment is IBD or IBS. I'll give more details later, and I still owe an explanation for Thomas Lovelace / Eleanor Evans. If you don't have a paternal line to go with, I definitely would order the Family Finder test. Cuzzins, In answer to Donna about adjusting the parameters on autosomal matches... The centimorgan (cM) is, according to the ISOGG wiki (International Society of Genetic Genealogy), "... a unit of recombinant frequency which is used to measure genetic distance. It is often used to imply distance along a chromosome, and takes into account how often recombination occurs in a region." It is more or less interpreted as a measure of length of shared DNA segments. Again, from the ISOGG wiki, the major testing companies "use centiMorgans to denote the size of matching DNA segments in autosomal DNA tests. Segments which share a large number of centiMorgans in common are more likely to be of significance and to indicate a common ancestor within a genealogical timeframe." (http://isogg.org/wiki/Centimorgan) The way I interpret this is that as the "size" limit in cM is increased, the probability of a shared segment denoting a relationship is also increased. So "longer" shared segments between two people indicate a higher probability that the two share a common ancestor. ISOGG suggests adding together the cM for all shared segments of 5 cM or above to use in calculating the probable percentage of DNA shared with a match (http://isogg.org/wiki/Centimorgan#Converting_centiMorgans_into_percentages) . Gedmatch allows the user to specify the cM value to use when searching for matches, and they set their default at 7 cM. I tend to go with 5 cM per ISOGG. But others go even lower, sometimes down to 3 cM or even less. When you decrease the value of cM, you come up with more matching segments but they are much smaller, and the probability that they are random matches rather than matches due to relatedness is increased. Cuzzin Doug Lovelace and I are descendants of Ol' Barton the horse thief, Doug through Barton's son Asa and I through Barton's son Benjamin. Our relationship is calculated as 5th cousins 1 generation removed. ISOGG has a table of "Average autosomal DNA shared by pairs of relatives, in percentages and centiMorgans" here: http://isogg.org/wiki/Autosomal_DNA_statistics#Table According to that table of **averages**, Doug and I should share a total of 1.66 cM, or 0.0244% of our DNA. Using the Gedmatch default of 7 cM for the cutoff, Doug does not show as a match to me (7 cm >> 1.66 cM). The same thing for 5 cM and 3 cM. If I lower the threshold to 2 cM, we share a total of 4.9 cM (0.072%). If I lower it to the minimum, 1 cM, we share a total of 7 cM (0.103%). Using the ISOGG table of averages, we should be somewhere around fifth cousins (3.32 cM, 0.0488%) to fourth cousins once removed (6.64 cM, 0.0977%). So unless I really lower the matching threshold at Gedmatch, Doug and I don't match at all. Kim Philbeck Wood and I are both descendants of William Lovelace of Rutherford County. William is the grandson of Ol' Barton the horse thief. I descend from William's son George Logan Lovelace, and Kim descends from George's sister Eliza Ann (Lovelace) Philbeck. That makes us third cousins. According to the table at ISOGG, Kim and I should share **on average** a total of about 53 cM, or 0.781% of our DNA. If I use Gedmatch's default cutoff (7 cM), Kim and I share a total of 154 cM, about 3 times as much as expected on average! In the table, that would make us on the order of second cousins or second cousins once removed. What this demonstrates is that the predictions are just that, predictions, and that the actual relationships may vary around the **average** that is predicted. I just toss this out there as a demonstration of one way to use comparisons. Donna and I are a generation closer than Kim and I. Donna and I both descend from George Logan Lovelace, I through George's son Joseph Baxter, and Donna through his son James Dolphus. That makes us second cousins. Donna has submitted a sample to FTDNA, and I'm anxious to see how we match. I need to read up on triangulation. Lenny, do you have any good references to suggest? Greg Triangulation is just three or more people matching on the same segment. If you have two people match, you may presume that the line is where the obvious tree match is. I find that many of my matches actually have two or three tree matches, so there is no way to know which of those matches the particular segment comes from. But if you find a third person who matches that segment and only matches one part of the tree, then you can "triangulate" that match like a 3-legged stool and get a statistical certainty that the particular DNA segment is from that ancestral line. In the Lovel*** analysis I have a number of people that match Tom Cates, and a number that match Bob Cates, but I don't have yet someone who matches both Tom and Bob on the same segment. If they did, I would know it would have to be through the Cates or Lovel*** lines. So if the person we matched with did not appear to have any Cates/Berry+++ ancestry, we would know that the match is on Lovel***. For genetic genealogy they say test everyone. I love 2nd cousins, because they match enough to be really certain, and you isolate your line through one set of great grandparents so you know where to look when a third cousin matches both of you.
