Ada Letitia ("Tish") Loveless Loveless, Ada Letitia ("Tish") Kalamazoo Ada Letitia ("Tish") Loveless, Ph.D., women's athletics pioneer and longtime Director of Women's Athletics at Kalamazoo College, died on Thursday, September 22, 2016, at her home. She was 91 years old. Tish served as Director of Women's Athletics from 1953 until she retired in 1986. Prior to her arrival, there were no women's intercollegiate athletic teams at Kalamazoo College. During her tenure, she established women's varsity teams in tennis, field hockey, archery, swimming, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and cross country. She is the most successful coach of women's teams in the history of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the oldest athletic conference in the country. Her teams won 28 league championships: 23 in tennis, four in archery, and one in field hockey. Her 1986 women's tennis squad finished third in the nation. In 1992, Kalamazoo College inducted Tish into its Athletic Hall of Fame and, in 2015, the College dedicated the "Tish Loveless Court" in the Anderson Athletic Center. Tish believed in the benefits of competition for everyone, regardless of skill level, and she worked tirelessly to ensure all students had opportunities to compete. She added new sports and classes based on student requests, and not just her own skills. On several occasions, Tish coached sports largely unfamiliar to her at the urging of passionate students. Over the years, she learned, and then taught, fencing, archery, modern dance, folk dance, social dance, and swimming. Tish earned a BS in physical education from the University of Illinois in 1948, an MS from UCLA in 1952, and a PhD in education from Michigan State in 1977. In 1988, she was inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Hall of Fame. She received the Weimar K. Hicks Award from the Kalamazoo College Alumni Association for service to the College in 2002. Thanks to the loving care of friends and caregivers, Tish spent her last days at her Kalamazoo home that she had shared with Marilyn Hinkle, a lifelong good friend, who died on January 25, 2007. Tish is survived by many nieces and nephews and their children, as well as several generations of Kalamazoo students who always treated her like family. A memorial service and reception is being planned for November 12, 2016 at 3:30 p.m. at the Stetson Chapel at Kalamazoo College. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tish Loveless Women's Athletics Endowment or the Marilyn Hinkle Endowed Scholarship for Arts at Kalamazoo College. Betty Jo Lovelace Betty Jo Lovelace, devoted mother and wife, passed away on September 18, 2016 at Mesilla Valley Hospice in Las Cruces, NM. She was born to Beatrice (Johnson) and Clarence Charlton in her beloved town of Clovis, NM where she lived until graduating from high school. She remained loyal to the Clovis High Wildcats all of her life. Betty's grandparents were early pioneers of NM settling north of Clovis, NM. She spent many happy days there as a child and enjoyed hunting and fishing with her dad. Betty attended Texas Tech University and later married Arlon Lovelace of Farwell, TX. They lived their lives together in Texico, Albuquerque, Tesuque and Santa Fe, NM. Betty devoted the early years of her married life to raising her 3 daughters. She and her husband Arlon shared a joy of growing vegetables and fruit trees, traveling to the geological sites in NM, and having fun with their grandchildren. She served as an assistant Girl Scout leader and expressed her creativity in the memorable Halloween costumes she made. She later worked at Montgomery Ward in Santa Fe as an invoice records clerk. Betty always took great pride in being a "New Mexican" and served as a volunteer for the Chamber of Commerce Bienvenidos in Santa Fe. She was a member of St. John's Methodist Church and the P.E.O. Sisterhood. After 46 years of marriage, her husband, Arlon passed away. In 1997 she married Dick Barton. They spent 11 years traveling and in general enjoying life. In 2008 she suffered the loss of her second husband and moved to Las Cruces where she lived with her daughter Midge and son-in-law David and then at Good Samaritan Retirement Village. Being an only child, Betty was always grateful for the special friends that entered her life and especially Gordon Owen who in her last years was a true blessing. Betty had a love of art and nature and enjoyed oil painting and china painting in her retirement years. She loved the outdoors and had a knack for growing beautiful flower gardens. Birds were another favorite with hummingbirds in Tesuque and a blue jay named "Mooch" that would come to be hand fed peanuts in her back yard in Santa Fe. Betty is survived by her children: Cathy Haynes (Allan) of Lubbock TX, Leslie Bailey (David) of Ft. Sumner NM and Midge Wilson (David) of Las Cruces NM; Grandchildren: Allan Haynes III (Jamie), David Haynes, Melissa Goldschmid (Charles), Celeste Lyapin (Sasha), Kendra Bailey, and Matthew Wilson; Great Grandchildren: Rory, Mayzie and Aiden Haynes, Catherine, Emma and Elizabeth Goldschmid; and many other family members. Greg is still unable to post to the list due to all the recent software upgrades since Ancestry took over the Rootsweb lists. He asked me to forward his reply. ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Greg Lovelace <greg@part-of-the-tree.com> To: 'Wanda Rabb' <wcr1951@yahoo.com> Sent: Sunday, September 25, 2016 1:20 PM Subject: RE: [LL] Obit of Nan Lovelace McGlohon (NC) Hey, Wanda I am still unable to post to the Lovelace List, so if you would like, you can forward this over. Nan Lovelace is listed in the home of her parents Edward Y. and Frances P. Lovelace in Twp. 9, Edgecombe Co., NC in 1930. She was 8 years old and had a ton of older siblings. Edward Y. and his parents were born in Virginia according to this census. Edward and his wife were both 44 years old, born ca 1886. The NC death index from Ancestry lists him as Edward Young Lovelace, b. 19 Feb 1886, d. 22 Mar 1977 in Wilson, Wilson Co., NC. He was married to Frances when he registered for the draft for WWI on 12 Sep 1918, and they were living in Macclesfield, Edgecombe Co., NC. In 1910, he was married to Frances and had one daughter, Frances, age 7 months. The family was living in Otter Creek, Edgecombe Co., NC. Edward was 24, and stated that he and his parents were born in North Carolina. In 1900, Edward was 14, living in the home of his parents William and Alice Lovelace in Meadsville, Halifax Co., VA. In addition to two older sisters (the oldest, Bettie, was 22 and born August 1877) and a younger brother, Edward's cousin Henry P. Young, age 10, was included in the census listing. Edward's father William was 54 years old, born Apr 1846, and he and Alice had been married for 32 years (married ca 1868). A search on Ancestry for William using a birth year of 1846 plus/minus 2 years and a birthplace of Virginia returns, among other things, a listing from the 1880 census of Meadsville, Halifax Co., VA. William Lovelace was 34, married to his wife Alice, with 6 children, the youngest of whom was Bettie, age 3 (born ca 1877). This matches the information for the father of Edward Young Lovelace. Also of interest is Willianm's entry in the 1910 census of Meadsville, Halifax Co., VA, listing him with wife Alice and the middle initial "O." In 1870, William and Alice are in Birch Creek, Halifax Co., VA with a young daughter. He is 24. On 5 June 1917, widow Alice Sydnor Lovelace, a resident of Halifax Co., VA, applied for a pension under the Pension Act of 1902 for the service of her late husband William Oldham Lovelace. According to her application, her husband William had died on 29 Mar 1917 of pneumonia. The middle name "Oldham" is familiar to researchers of the Virginia Lovelace families. This family goes back to Tabitha Oldham who married Thomas Lovelace. I'll leave it to others to fill in those generations. Please do!
