Afternoon Cuzzies, Getting to be summery around here.....pretty warmish, breezy, nice day. Though the hummingbirds are all over Texas, mine haven't come into their feeder yet..... ) : I've changed their juice now four times. I don't know what the prob is. Sisters in law and chums, ages 82 thru 90, are leaving in the morning for Portugal.....don't believe from the news I'd be looking forward to that! o : In fact, I can tell you.....at that age I hope the world finds me rocking on some nice front porch enjoying the breeze and the scenery and a big glass of lemonade. I wouldn't care to be stomping around Europe.....but, then at heart, I'm a country girl. Ole Buckley commented that we were gonna have to play taps for one of mah rose bushes who from the winter had a huge case of the sickies.....and I pooh poohed the whole idea while he laughed. Hee, hee.....magic green thumb strikes again: the silly thing is blooming it's head off! ( : Y'all have a good one! Buckette
Mornin' Cuzzies, Happy Mothers Day! Very nostalgic day.....many of us think of our own mothers of which many are not here....some of the memories fond, and some not so fond. Today don't forget to gather in those who don't have children in your families and give them a hug, too.....since I wasn't a mom until rather late in the day, Mothers Day was kinda hard on me for a number of years. And, the world has gone nuts......a baby hummingbird was hatched about an hour ago on a web cam..... http://www.ustream.tv/channel/Hummingbird-Nest-Cam And, there are 1500 there now watching it! And, you won't believe the conversation...... o : Still complete unease in the towns of Acuna and Del Rio.....still an American news blackout which I don't understand at all. Only news comingin is from Spanish newspapers written in Spanish natch, and pictures of dead bodies on the ground which is not too neat. Through the Graceof God there go I.....I could still be living there. o : Everyone have a great day! ( : Buckette
Lisbeth Davis writes: >Didn't we learn anything from Prohibition? You know.....evidentally not. I'm now coming around to the idea that marijuana has to be legalized, and maybe coccaine....altho I don't know quite how I feel about that yet. Coccaine legalization would actually stop wars I think. You can't help but wonder abt. the poppy fields in Pakistan w/ our military surrounding them. Sounds very strange to me! Ole Buckley told me a funny oiyle rig story last night. He said one of the wells in Argentina blew all to hecky one day! It was a very, very coldday and the crew who were working the well, all Argentines, like their mate.....pronounced mah te, accent on the second syllable, which is tea to keep them warm. And, they would build a fire to get and keep their tea hot. So, this particular day they just built the fire right on the deck of the oil rig. And, you know what happened.....the gas coming outta the well was ignited by the fire, and there was a huge explosion and mess. o : Buckette
Mornin' Cuzzies, Well, it doesn't take long for all hell to break loose.....and come very close to what was once my back door. It seems the Zetas, the most violent of the drug cartels in Mexico, has just shot the hecky outta Cuidad Acuna, border town in Mexico across from Del Rio in West Texas, killing abt. 30 including that state's Comandante of the military.....and has just got a lot of my chums scared to death. I lived in Del Rio for abt. a decade, and could actually see Mexico from my front door. Since we ran a ranch, we were on the Bracero program, and most of our people were from Acuna. We were all friends, all family, generational. Makes one really realize how much Mexico's drug war is right in our backyards. And, these drug cartels threaten the local American press so that they don't publish any details abt. murders, probs.......news iss just sort of in general.....like "don't go across the river." I see from the local rag, such as it has become, that the Astros are still batting 1.000 in the loss dept. Can someone send us a new owner so we can buy some new bats? Beautiful, breezy, semi-overcast day......afternoon temps averaging higher than normal. Is this an omen as to what is to come heatwise? Shooooooot! We hardly had a spring! ) : Have a good one! Ginny, my husband was an independent oil operator and only worked for companies under contract from time to time. Ryder-Scott in Houston was contracted by Argentina to run their biggest water-flood project in Argentina, and my husband ran that for them for 4 years and then returned to the US. Though he is an American, he was raised in Tampico, Mexico, thus his first language was Spanish. His working all over the world was shortly ended by marriage when he was 46......he was domesticated rapidly acquiring a wife, a new baby <Da Kid>, two cats, a dog, a house, and a lawn to mow, all by the end of the first yr. of marriage. And, to hecky w/ Argentina and their fancy water flood production! ( : He never worked off-shore which is another whole different deal engineering wise. Buckette Susan - You have mentioned that your husband had worked for a petroleum company. What is the name of the company? And ask him if he has heard of an organization called STLE (Society of Tribologists & Lubrication Engineers). I used to work for them and they had many of the Petroluem Companies as members, including BP. Ginny of Chicago

Mornin' Cuzzies, Well, it's a TGIF today for nothing more than to close the stock market down later today to stop the bleeding! o : Mer ceeee! Are we ever in a hellava mess...... My silly realtor was just before closing two deals on my condos......and I was pushing him to do both as soon as possible because you never know how the world economic situation is gonna change and rapidly. Well, nooooo, he had to go off and see the girl friend in another town. o : Now, the buyers are on a "wait and see" program, and I don't blame them, and the deals aren't done. ) : And, this gusher sitting in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico.....Ole Buckley is a petroleum engineer who are the people who take care of just such a prob. And, the difficulty of doing so is above and beyond. You can believe that the best trained in the world are standing over that hole....whether they can handle it or not remains to be seen. They are dealing w/ a situation that's never been faced before.....w/ methods and equipment that's also never been tried. We can only hope! Po New Orleans.....star of the South! Is taking a beating......my fav place in the US.....nuttiest, most loosey goosey, laid back place in the world! One of the times I was there I passed a teenage boy in the French Quarter wearing a hysterical t-shirt.....don't remember what it said, but it was the funniest one I'd ever seen! I commented on it. He took it off. I gave him a $10 bill and went on down the street.....yes, I took it home, washed it, and wore it at the next day's workout of the swim team, and they almost drowned laughing. Yes, I kept my kids entertained so that they would go thru grueling workouts day after day. It was part of the job description. Y'all have a good one today! ( : Buckette

Mornin' Cuzzies, The weather has been soooo fine around here that I've spent most of mah time outdoors, putsying....which includes messing w/ plants and wandering in the woods, hoping I don't step on a copperhead which are so well camouflaged. Black and Yella, two of the cat crew, usually accompany me, which helps. Both are big outdoor cats who lived in the woods before they decided to move in here....well know their way around. Bringing you up to date w/ the Fluff saga, newest orphan cat.....who's been hanging around since before the winter started last year. He has finally developed a routine wherein he comes to eat twice a day now, chows down purdy good, but is still really thin. He both hisses and mews at me at the same time.....I can pet him on the top of his head. Doesn't purr. I think he's really been abused. In the mornings after he's eaten, he stretches out on the upstairs deck for a very relaxed nap.....boy stretches out on his back or on his tummy w/ both hind legs stretched out behind him....really crashes big time. When the sun takes over his shady spot along about 11 in the morning, he moves on to other places....I know not where. A really pretty little kitty.....small, but I think full grown....lots of hair. I so wish people took better care of their kitties! It was a hold your breath moment yesterday when the Arizona Diamondbacks came to town to play the Astros.....the word was there was gonna be a b-i-g demonstration, and that's abt. what we needed around here for the po cellar team, the 'Stros, who don't seem to be able to beg, borrow, or steal a hit. When all was said and done, only about 25 people who oppose Arizona's controversial new immigration law gathered in front of Minute Maid Park to picket yesterday's baseball game. Y'all have a good one! Buckette

WOW......thanks for sharing this Greg. Margaret ----- Original Message ----- From: "Greg Lovelace" <greglovelace@comcast.net> To: <lovelace@rootsweb.com> Cc: <lovelace@carolina.rr.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 28, 2010 12:37 PM Subject: [LL] 2011 NGS Family History Conference OK, y'all... Pay attention! I know this is way in advance, but that's why I'm trying to get it out early. The 2011 annual National Genealogy Society Family History Conference is going to be held in Charleston, South Carolina, 11-14 May 2011. That's over a year away, and I am planning to attend. I just thought it might be a wonderful opportunity for some of us to attend a national conference and meet each other. Since it is so far in advance, it gives everyone time to decide and to make plans. Is anyone interested? The conference registration fee for this year's meeting in Salt Lake City is in the range of $200-$250 for the full four-day conference (for comparison's sake). Then hotels, restaurants, shopping, etc. I would love to see you folks and share what little I know of Charleston with you. The call for papers says: "Charleston is a city which is rich in history. Since 2011 is the 150th Anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War at nearby Ft. Sumter, lectures about Civil War records or other military records are encouraged. We also invite lecture submissions on topics about Native Americans, African Americans, and other ethnic immigration groups including Scotch-Irish, German, Huguenot and Jewish; research in South Carolina and the surrounding states; migration patterns from South Carolina to Georgia, Tennessee and the other Gulf States; general genealogical topics including methodology, skills building, record analysis, problem solving and writing family history; and lectures for the GenTech track which should focus on technological innovation in genealogy." There is also a video presentation about what to expect at a national conference: http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/cs/video_conference And finally, there is the conference brochure for this year's meeting, just to give you an idea of what a conference of this magnitude will be like: http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/galleries/new-gallery/Registration_brochure.pdf Let's start planning! We've been wishing we could all get together anyway, so let's do this! Mornin' Cuzzies, The Kentucky Derby each year gets me totally where I live! My crazy love for animals started w/ horses, and I came by it naturally. My grandmother, mother, and uncle all showed horses in Madison Square Garden in NYC, the pinnacle show in the country. The best of the bunch was probably my uncle who was Captain of the Polo Team at Princeton University, but we lost him in WW II in '45....an Overstreet w/ a Loveless gran. And, of course, I was thrown up on a show horse, English riding, at a very early age, and sent to the shows. My family was hysterical they had another 'horsey' one in the family! Really good horse stuff comes naturally.....I'm convinced it's in the genes. I married a rancher, who though he didn't know the front end from the back end of a horse, his father had the touch. He bought a King Ranch stallion and parked him on the ranch wherein most of the 100 head of really good looking horses they had were from this horse. But, the father died, and no one kept up the registration of the horses, etc. But, the older Mexican cowboys could tell me who belonged to whom and I registered the whole lot of them. In the meantime there was a great track in Del Rio and I became very interested in the running and training of quarter horses, and stumbled upon a brand new trainer who was just learning the game.....and the guy just had it all naturally. He could spot a winner, and those horses talked to him, I'm convinced. After several years learning the biz, he started picking horses for his owners at sales, and they started winning everything in sight. I was introducing the trainer to the boys who could afford to buy the really top quarter horse yearlings, and he as a trainer was on his way. Great stock, great skills.....unbeatable combination! Now, where does the Derby come in? Well, Todd Pletcher, Bob Blaffert, and D. Wayne Lucas, the top Derby trainers, were also from this same quarter horse tracking system......but, my trainer was handling it very nicely and beating them in the biggie quarter horse races wherein the purses were also from $1 mil to $2 mil. Actually Todd was a pup then, having just been born, but, his dad was on the track and he went on to learn the trade from Lucas. Todd's horse won the derby yesterday...... Fate has a way of putting us on life's path, through no fault our own. My trainer was beginning to talk of going on to thoroughbreds which he would have and risen to the top for his horses were beating these trainers' horses on the quarter track. But, a very strange thing happened on the way to the stars: he developed an accute case of cancer and was dead w/in the year. I on the other hand chose to get a divorce because of a very unfortunate situation, leaving my ex-husband w/ an acclaimed stallion who could have earned him betw. $20 and $40 mil, but didn't because the trainer and I, the knowledgable ones of the team, were out of the picture. And, my po ex-husband didn't have the vaguest clue, and died never knowing what he had in his hands....which was the pot from the rainbow. So, you can see why the Derby has great meaning for me......were the deck stacked differently, we would have all been at the top of thoroughbred racing, without a doubt. And, you know, I'm star-struck abt. competition, athletics, winners, and the limelight.....and there they all are: people we beat when we were running the quarter horses. Alas, not my path to trod, but I'm still captivated by the biz and very wistfully recall the wonderful aromas of a racing stable's shed row, a mixture of newly cut hay, linament, and the horses, a smell I love. I'll tell you some more tomorrow.....yes, I picked the winner yesterday, even in that slop. That's what I have a nose for! ( : Have a good one! Buckette

Mornin' Cuzzies, A number of years ago.....ahem....when I was 6 or 7, I went to this private girls school, and they had a May Fete thingie wherein a pretty little upperclassman actually did the May Pole thingee w/ long naturally blonde hair....don't ever see one of those anymore, and then was elected May Day Queen......Lawdy, lawdy, I was impressed right outta mah shoes! And, she was barefooted.....that got mah attention, too! So, it's been my life long ambition to be elected May Day Queen.....and I've never seen one of those again. But, were I to, you can bet I'd jump right into the middle of it! And, today is the Kentucky Derby Day.....which also has great meaning in mah life.....I was headed in that direction, having come from winning the great Quarter horse equivalent.....where I knew the trainers today.....Pletcher, Lukas, and Blaffert....and beat them, thank you very much! We were all together in Ruidoso, New Mexico. Now the track today, according to the weather report, is supposed to be a swimming pool.....rain all day long and lots of it. You never know how your horse is gonna take to those conditions until you put him out on it.....and it's incredibly dangerous because they just really have no base under them. Aaaaand, we have the oil spill which maybe one of the more horrific things I've ever watched.....it may totally kill of the coast in my lifetime. And, you well know what an animal lover I am.....and the loss of wildlife is going to be massive. We watch TV w/ great interest because Ole Buckley was a petroleum engineer and ran the biggest field Argentina had which was a water flood.....now that's different than an off-shore operation. But, as one of the highly trained techs in the bidness, he said he just couldn't imagine this prob in the Gulf. He said BP didn't run a good show......they had an explosion in the last several years here at one of their refineries which killed 15 people. Ole Buckley's not too impressed w/ that. Anyhoo, what I think you can expect from the whole deal is the gubmit take over of the oil bidness.......we laugh at all the gubmit officials and attys running to the scene of the crime, like they could offer any constructive suggestions at all. They don't have the vaguest clue! Look for gasoline to go to $4 and $5 a gallon. Gonna get dicey! o : Have a good one! Buckette
I have Roberta Champion Lovelace in my database from the death of her sister, Ruth Champion Vest, in 2007.
