    2. Hi Donna, My family's line does have Cherokee roots on the Lovelace side.We go back to John Lovelace Sr. born 1801 married to Mary Polly Cooper Bookout born 1797. Mary's grandfather was a Cherokee chief Enola Blackfox during the time of the Indian removal. Her Father Isaac Cooper was a Choctaw Chief. Cousin Kevin Davis who is not on the list but is from the same line I am has done extensive research on Cherokees. If you are interested, let me know and I'll put you in touch with him. 1. [LL] James Moses Lovelace
    2. Jack D. Lovelace
    3. Sheila, If I have pieced the pieces together correctly, your James Moses Lovelace began life in Pulaski County, Kentucky, in Jun 1855 where he was listed as James M. Loveless, the son of John Loveless (1828-1908) and his second wife, Eliza Jane Mascey (c1827-c1863). John is the son of Zachariah Lovelace and Margaret Hall; Zachariah is the son of John Thomas Loveless and Susannah Roy. The parents of John Thomas are not yet known, but DNA testing has him in the Maryland group. James M. is a half-brother to Cyrenius G. Loveless, the father of James Moses Loveless who was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky in the 1880's. In 1860, James M. is listed on the census of his parents in Pulaski County, Kentucky. In 1870, James M. is listed on the census of his father and his father's third wife, Lucinda A. Hines. This is the last record that I have found for James M. in Kentucky. As you mentioned in your previous post, James is found in Washington County, Indiana, on the 1880 census. This is the last time that James' surname is listed as Loveless. Following this date, all records which I have found for James have his surname as Lovelace. I suspect that this is because of Anna, who had some education. James married Anna Lockhart on 13 Apr 1895 in Washington County, Indiana. Anna is the daughter of George Lockhart and Hannah Catherine Brown, who were married in Washington County, Indiana, on 11 Apr 1872. George and Hannah appear on the 1880 census for Campbellsburg, Washington County, Virginia, where Anna is listed as Lelie A. Lockhart. Since Nancy is a nickname for Ann (don't ask me how they got that), I suspect that her name is truely Anna and not Nancy Ann. James and Anna are found on the censuses for Washington County, Indiana, in 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930. On these census records are listed the following children: James William b: 1898, Emmet L. b: 1902, Essie Marie b: 1905, and Cecil E. b: c1911. From Anna's obituary we get another daughter, Amelia May who appears to have been born about 1909 and died before 1910, since she is not listed on the census and her mother has had one child die. -- Jack D. Lovelace

    2. Desr Merilee; My father and my brother John in particular had beautiful long fingers. We called them artist fingers. We descend from John Baptiste. My dad had gorgeous hand writing for someone born in 1900. He was a self-educated licensed civil engineer. John was a mechanical engineer, licensed but without a full college degree. His drawings were outstanding. They were also math genius.. John and Dad both worked all over the world. Very interesting, must be a genetic trait. My dad was Dennis Lovelace, the son of Archibald who was the son of James Madison. Lovelace I think. My Lovelace records are not on this computer, at home in Oregon on another computer.. 2. In a message dated 1/28/2011 3:32:42 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, lovelacejackd@verizon.net writes: The only James Moses that I have in my database is James Moses Loveless, born in the 1880's. He is the son of Crenius G. Loveless and his wife Nancy Victoria Brown of Pulaski County, Kentucky. There is a James M. Loveless, age 1, on the 1850 census. He is the son of John and Ruhama Loveless of Macoupin County, Illinois. There is no James Lovelxxx to be found in Washington County, Indiana, on the 1790 thru 1870 censuses. Jack James ? Lovelace who died in Washington County, Indiana May 8, 1941, Is the cause of some of my migraines. He is supposedly James Moses Lovelace, but I have no proof of the middle name except what was written by his grandson Lawrence Lee Lovelace who died in 2008. Lawrence said his grandfather said his name was James Moses, he was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky in about 1854 (date varied). James did not read or write. He said he left home in Pulaski County because he could not get along with a step parent, and ended up going to Louisville, where he was hired to work on the farm of a Mr. Denny in Washington County - there is a James Loveless age 28 in the 1880 census of Washington County (Canton Twp) who is living as a hired hand in the family of a John Dennany. Somewhere between the 1880 census and the 1900 census where what I am told is the same person now listed as James Lovelace the spelling is different, either by census takers or by guess and by golly, since Mr. Lovelace did not read or write. He is then in all census records in Washington County, Indiana. Here is his wife Nancy (aka Ann/Anna's) death notice. On their marriage license names are spelled James Lovelace & Anna Lockhart. AAAAGH. I have had a devil of a time verifying most things about James Loveless/Lovelace. _________________________________________ Death Notice reads "Death Claims Aged Resident. Mrs. Ann Lovelace died unexpectedly Friday at the suburban home of her son Emmet Lovelace on State Rd. 56 East of Salem. Her death occured on her seventy third birthday anniversary. Daughter of George and Catherine Lockhard she resided at Beech Grove until her marriage. For several years she has been a member of the Canton Christian Church. The husband James Lovelace and one daughter Amelia May proceeded her in death. Funeral services for Mrs. Lovelace were held at two o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Canton Christian Church by the Rev. Esten Martin, with burial in the Canton Cemetery." Card of Thanks - We wish to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to all our friends and neighbors for their kindness and sympathy shown at the death of our mother, Nancy Ann Lovelace. We also wish to thank Rev. Esten Martin, the singers, pallbearers. those sending flowers, Winfield DeWalt, funeral director and all who assisted in any way. The Children. 3. Just a thought. Today living to ninety is becoming more common but still remarkable. I read and I think(?) the life expectancy for those born between 1700 - 1800 was around 47 0r 53 years of age or thereabouts. What would be the chances that Ol' Ben lived to 90? Greg, The best that I can determine, with no proof, is that Benjamin b: 1727 died in Montgomery County, Maryland, in 1784-1785. The Benjamin that died in Nelson County, Kentucky, was his son. Zadock and Reason went to Nelson County, Kentucky, about 1799. Their brother Benjamin followed after selling his property in Montgomery County, Maryland, in 1800. After his death, the younger children of Benjamin went to live with his brother Zadock. 1. [LL] Henry Lovelace

    3. Lou Ann, Back on 06 Dec 2010 you wrote the following: "I have eight children for John and Milley son James b ca 1785/86 VA d aft 1850 Pendleton Co KY m Mary "Polly" Arvin b ca 1785 OH their son Henry b ca 1822 with wife Liza (no further info) or wife Hannah Hutton ....not sure which was mother of James James Moses b Jun 14, 1848 d May , 1941 Washington Co IN m Nancy Anna Lockhart" Where did you get your information on Henry? I have Henry, the son of James and Mary Arvin as being born in 1826-1827 in Pendleton County, Kentucky. I do not have him with a wife. In fact, I have not been able to locate Henry after he is listed on the 1850 census. There is a Henry Lovelace in Pike County, Indiana, who is the right age and for whom I have not yet identified any parents. But he and his wife Marty are listed on the 1850 census for Pike County, Indiana, which was enumerated on 11 Aug 1850. The census for Pendleton County, Kentucky, was enumerated on 30 Sep 1850. The two censuses are not for the same individual. The only James Moses that I have in my database is James Moses Loveless, born in the 1880's. -- Jack D. Lovelace

    3. Merilee, I have the following on Richard Lovelace, son of Reason Lovelace: b: 1790 in Rock Creek, Montgomery County, Maryland. In 1800, Richard is in Nelson County, Kentucky, with his father. He was counted in the household of Reason Lovelace in Bullitt County, Kentucky, on the 1810 census (Reason was actually enumerated twice). He married Sarah Fay Hall on 20 Sep 1810 in Bullitt County, Kentucky. He appears on the tax list for Shelby County, Kentucky in 1812 and 1814. He appears on the tax list for Bullitt County, Kentucky in 1815 and 1816. He appears on the census for Washington County, Indiana, in 1820, where he is named Richard Loveless. He appears on the census for Washington County, Indiana, in 1830, where he is named Richard Lovies. He appears on the census for Vernon Township, Washington County, Indiana, in 1840, where he is named Richard Loveless. He died on 02 Apr 1843 in Washington County, Kentucky. The World Connect Project on Rootsweb.com has three databases for the entry "Richard Lovelace" with spouse "Sally". Hopes this helps.
