Hi Lou Ann: I refer you to findagrave. It shows Raymond Hyatt (1900 - 1956) and Spouse Lillie Mae Cook Herring (must have remarried) buried a Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Dillon, Dillon, SC. It also shows siblings and there is not a Carl mentioned. Hope this helps. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=hyatt&GSfn=raymond&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSst=43&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=18851558&df=all& Bob. -----Original Message----- From: Brondak via Sent: Tuesday, February 24, 2015 4:20 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [LL] Obituary of Dorothy Frances Hyatt mentions daughter CarlaLovelace - SC I've been taking advantage of being snowed in and am trying to catch up on a lot of saved postings. I came across this one and have a question. Did this John (Johnny) perhaps have two marriages to maybe cousins? I have him married to an Eva Nell Hyatt, daughter of Raymond Hyatt. The places of the Hyatts match and indicate that Raymond and and Carl Hyatt could be brothers, making their daughters cousins. Is it possible that John married cousins or one of these marriages might be wrong? This info on Eva Nell was precipitated by an obit of her sister Linda Fay and some further notes from Doug and Greg? Eva's sister died in 2009. The below obit was a mother of Carla Hyatt with the mother dying in 2013. Anyone know anything about this? I would like to thank you all for your responses! We now have a wealth of new sites to investigate and more treasures to find. The one site that I did not mention is the source of the obituaries that I post daily and that's Legacy.com. On that site you can select the surname(s) [In the title line or the text of the obit] and the newspaper(s) and/or states they are published in , providing, of course that the newspapers use legacy.com. The obits are emailed to you daily as they are published. I look at them and if there is any additional information in listing of the funeral home, I post that as well. Thanks again, Bob Stewart
I've been trying to figure this one out. The Lovelace cousins mentioned are the children of John Robert "Buster" Lovelace and Leiler Davidson. In the obit of Leiler are mentioned four sisters-in-law one of whom is the Rosa Lee Davidson mentioned below as the grandmother of Melvin Barber. Leiler's obit does not mention any deceased brothers, so it appears that the four sisters in law are the sisters of John Robert and the Davidson that Rosa Lee married is probably a relative, but not a brother of Leiler. Does anyone know who the parents of John Robert might be and his four possible sisters Rosa Lee Davidson, Ruth Broughton, Willie mae Allen and Gussie Lee hutchinson. John Robert died in 1980, Leiler in 2008. She was born in 1911 and I don't have a birthdate for him. Rosa Lee was living in 2008, but had apparently died by by the time her grandson died in Feb 2015. Anyone have any ideas about this family? To find out more about newspapers, check out the ancestor hunt blog. The specific instance below leads you to his favorite free newspaper sources. Check out his archives for how to's and state by state lists. Fantastic! http://www.theancestorhunt.com/blog/the-5-best-free-sites-for-online-newspaper-research-for-genealogy My favorites are Elephind, Google news archive (free) and Fulton Postcards also free. The latter started as a Fulton, NY and surrounding county site but now has many historic newspapers PS in places you know your target person lived, modern editions of newspapers that have been around for a while may have something about your "ancient" family in a "Hundred Years Ago" article. So don't dismiss modern articles with the target surname (I assume we are not talking Smiths) I found out when my greatgrandmother sold her house in Nevada, Mo (1898) in one such article from 1998, long after my part of the family had packed off to California. Same newspaper 1998 & 1898 was in google archive. Went back and got the first article. All in Google archives. Nancy Caton California Thumbed into my iPhone. Your local Family History Center is a good place to use some of the paid websites that have been mentioned to the list. To find the center nearest to you, go to this site https://familysearch.org/locations/ <https://familysearch.org/locations/> You don’t have to be LDS to use a center; I’m not LDS, but find the centers helpful for using paid websites to see what is offered - and for ordering microfilms of documents from places I can’t visit. Thanks to everyone on finding newspaper sources. At the Library of Congress one, there is a lot there to look over. I did stumble across something on Henry Loveless #2 & Marinda Loveless and transcribed it below. LIBRARY OF CONGRESS “Chronicling America http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/ The Ottawa free trader., June 10, 1854, Image 3 Admistrator’s Notice PUBLIC Notice is hereby given that the subscriber, Administratrix of the estate of Henry Loveless deceased, will attend the County Court of Livingston County, and the State of Illinois, at a term thereof to be holden at the Court House, in Pontiac, in said County, on the first Monday of July next, when and where all persons having claims against said estate are notified and requested to present the same to said Court for adjudication. MARINDA LOVELESS Administratrix. April 18, 1854
I have done some searches of NYS Historic Newspapers. Aside from the obituaries that some have already mentioned, the wedding announcements complete with photos have been a great find. They used to list lots of relatives and if the wedding was at home, the address was there too. _www.nyhistoricnewspapers.org_ (http://www.nyhistoricnewspapers.org) Phyllis of the Northern NY Mountains
Tom, You might try "GenealogyBank.com" at http://www.genealogybank.com/gbnk/. It is a fee service. Bob, I share your search source choices, and will add a few more: USGenWeb (www.usgenweb.org) which hosts pages for most counties in most states BillionGraves (www.billiongraves.com) which, while it isn't as extensive as Find-A-Grave, still has some good stuff Fold3 (www.fold3.com) which is mostly military records with some non-military things, and has a subscription fee The NC Archives (http://www.ncdcr.gov/archives/Home.aspx) The SC Archives (http://scdah.sc.gov/Pages/default.aspx) And there are many others.... Tom Loveless asked: "I am not familiar with newspaper sources, or how to search. Am I missing out on something?" There are several sources for online newspapers. Some are free (lke the Library of Congress "Chronicling America" website at http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/ ), some are fee-based (like Newspapers.com, another Ancestry.com subscription site at http://www.newspapers.com/) You can also google the name of the newspaper and see if you can find it that way. Hope this helps, Tom.... When you are doing research on your families the census can only take you as late as 1940, after that the sources are scarce. Obituaries can often bridge the gap between the last census and the current generation because there are often 3 generations published in the obit. It also is a valuable source for maiden names and other married names. In order to liven the list up a little, I am asking you to post your favorite search sites. I use ancestry.com and findagrave.com the most I also do a basic Google search which leads me to sites like intelius.com - I find this a great way to find alias and maiden names I did subscribe to Newspaperarchives.com for a short period and it helped me to break down a brickwall that had driven me crazy, but it is an expensive solution for the long term. I love the obits and I do have lots of questions to throw out to the group when I can find the time to get back and focus on my tree. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Tom Loveless via Sent: Monday, February 23, 2015 10:05 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [LL] sources Speaking of sources, I watch the Genealogy Road Show on PBS when it comes on. Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness is also a good source. And, I contact Genealogical and Historical Societies. There are often volunteers who are willing to do lookups for a minimum fee and cost of the copies. Donna

Tom, There are several newspaper subscription sites: Genealogybank.com and NewspaperArchive.com. It's best to check their coverage which you can do before subscribing. Many of them have recent papers or very old papers. It's tough to find the 1922-1990 coverage. Here is a free site for newspapers, but its "search" functions and I do not seem to see eye to eye: http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/
I think mine are the same, I can not afford the true version of ancestry.com but it helps some. I love getting your obits so I can cross reference my own information. My Great-Grandmother was Rosa Lovelace from Oklahoma, I am always looking for information. Thank you to everyone????
