Sylvia Nelson April 24, 1938 - February 13, 2015 Sylvia Nelson, 76, passed away on February 13, 2015 in Corona, California. She was the only child of Clinton J and Ethel Culbertson Nelson. She was born April 24, 1938. She grew up in Pocatello and was a very special child. She enjoyed many trips with her family to Posse Meets, Rodeos, and Chariot Races where her Father was the announcer. They had a lot of good times in their "Winnebago" traveling throughout the West. She was a member of the Chubbuck United Methodist Church. She loved to visit with her family and friends and became quite a tease to her cousins. She moved to Corona after her Mother passed away to be close to her Aunt Marion Worthen. There she got especially close to her cousins Peggy Loveless and Tracy Flint and her family. They celebrated many events with Sylvia and she was always included in there family get togethers. They loved her dearly and cared for her these last years of her life. Sylvia's family in Pocatello appreciated the love that was shown to her. She is survived by Her two Aunts, Rhoda Aiken, Meridian Idaho, Bertha Holcombe, Pocatello, Idaho, her cousins Peggy Loveless, Tracy Flint, Jeaneane Huth, Beverly Daniel, JoAnne Mielenz, Mark Holcombe, Anne Williamson and Paul Holcombe. For this is what the love of God means, that we observe his commandments; and yet his commandments are not burdensome, because everyone who has been born from God conquers the world. When you are doing research on your families the census can only take you as late as 1940, after that the sources are scarce. Obituaries can often bridge the gap between the last census and the current generation because there are often 3 generations published in the obit. Hal Bowen Howard, Jr., a gentleman devoted to his Episcopal faith, his family, his friends, and his home city of Memphis, TN, died peacefully in Palm Beach, Florida on Sunday, February 22nd at 89 with his son and daughter by his side. Beloved by all who knew him, he was an erudite man with courtly manners and a sly sense of humor. Mr. Howard was born on June 8, 1925 in Memphis, TN to Hal B. Howard and Marianne Crawford Howard. His early years were spent in Memphis attending Pentacost - Garrison School. His high school years were spent at The Choate School in Wallingford, Ct . He proceeded to Yale University for college and received a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations. Furthering his education, Hal received an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is a Certified Investment Counselor as well. Mr. Howard served in the Armed Services, posted in Japan. Throughout his illustrious career, Hal amassed over forty years of experience in the field of investment management. He is considered an expert in his field. He began his professional career began with T. Rowe Price of Baltimore, MD and was asked to move to New York City to start the office there. He remained with T Rowe Price for twenty - five years occupying the positions of Vice President and Director. In 1999, he established his own investment consulting firm, working with clients to meet their investment objectives by advising them and managing their portfolios. Until his death, Mr. Howard remained active in the investment business. While working in New York, Mr. Howard resided in Greenwich, Ct. There he raised his children, Hal Bowen Howard, III and Sara Crump Crawford Howard from his former marriage to the late Sara Macrae Humphreys Howard. Hal has lived primarily in Palm Beach, Florida for the last 25 years with his wife Suzanne de Rose Howard, who has also predeceased him. While in Palm Beach, Mr. Howard was a devoted member of Bethesda-by- the Sea Episcopal Church, proudly serving as an usher on many Sundays. On Saturday mornings Hal could be found at Green’s Pharmacy for breakfast. Hal was a philanthropic man and gave generously to the things that were important to him. Recurring themes in Mr. Howard’s generous philanthropy were his sentimental attachment to Memphis and its history, his dedication to superior education for those that might not be able to afford it. He was devoted to “give opportunity to people who otherwise would not have it” and took great joy in honoring others through his gifts. In recognition of his ongoing gifts to the Memphis Garden Club Mr Howard was named an honorary member of the Garden Club of America , which he found both humbling and amusing as it is an all women’s organization. Devotion to his heritage took form in the donation of a refurbished home, the current headquarters of Memphis Heritage and named Howard Hall in his honor. His philanthropic endeavors are numerous - but most recently he had dedicated his time as the Founder of the Crawford-Howard Foundation in Memphis, where he also served on the Board of Trustees of Elmwood Cemetery. Hal was a world traveler, enjoyed golfing, studying history, hunting and living life to the fullest. Mr. Howard is predeceased by his parents Hal Bowen Howard and Marianne Crawford Howard; his sister, Marianne Howard Guckenberger; his former wife, Sara Macrae Humphreys Howard; and his wife, Suzanne deRose Howard. He leaves his children, Hal Bowen Howard, III of Minneapolis, MN and Sara Crump Crawford Howard of Dorset, VT; grandchildren Cooper Meyer Howard and Isabella Macrae Garay; his niece Marianne Farnsworth Horan of Alexandria, VA; his nephew Sidney W Farnsworth, III, of Memphis; Memphis cousins William T Arthur, Jr., Anne Arthur Kenny, Coors Arthur, and Mary Miles Loveless; great nieces Elizabeth P. Douglas Lovelace, Donald Eugene Lovelace, and Gerald Wayne Lovelace. All three were born in Laurinburg, Scotland Co., NC, Douglas on 11 August 1954, Donald on 12 July 1956, and Gerald on 4 July 1958. All have Eva Nell Hyatt listed as the mother and father listed, respectively, as Johnny Eugene Lovelace, John Eugene Lovelace, and Johnie E Lovelace. There are no deeds in the online index for Scotland County from 1967 to present which have a reference to Johnny/Johnnie and Eva. I found Johnnie in the 1940 census listed with his parents Oliver and Corie in Bishopville, Lee Co., SC (enumeration district 31-2, image 23 of 53 on Ancestry.com). He's listed there as Eugene. None of the family trees I found on Ancestry list any marriages for him. Bishopsville, SC is about 100 miles SE of Crowders Mountain, Gaston Co., NC where Johnnie lived with his parents in 1930. It is also about 63 miles SW of Laurinburg, where Johnny and Eva are listed as the parents of their three sons. Other than this, I can't find anything. The places of the Hyatts match and indicate that Raymond and and Carl Hyatt could be brothers, making their daughters cousins. Is it possible that John married cousins or one of these marriages might be wrong? This info on Eva Nell was precipitated by an obit of her sister Linda Fay and some further notes from Doug and Greg? Eva's sister died in 2009. The below obit was a mother of Carla Hyatt with the mother dying in 2013. Anyone know anything about this? Lou Ann and Bob, The only thing I can find on the big sites are three entries in the "North Carolina, Birth Index, 1800-2000" on FamilySearch.org. Doug, do you have any further info on this family? Linda Faye is shown as a daughter of Raymond, and in Linda Faye's obituary it clearly names a sister Eva Lovelace, but there is no Eva on the list of Raymond's children or on the list of Linda Faye's siblings. So who is Eva? It shows Raymond Hyatt (1900 - 1956) and Spouse Lillie Mae Cook Herring (must have remarried) buried a Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Dillon, Dillon, SC. It also shows siblings and there is not a Carl mentioned. Hope this helps. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=hyatt&GSfn=raymond&GSb yrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSst=43&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=18851558&df=all& Bob. -----Original Message----- From: Brondak via Sent: Tuesday, February 24, 2015 4:20 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [LL] Obituary of Dorothy Frances Hyatt mentions daughter CarlaLovelace - SC I've been taking advantage of being snowed in and am trying to catch up on a lot of saved postings. I came across this one and have a question. Did this John (Johnny) perhaps have two marriages to maybe cousins? I have him married to an Eva Nell Hyatt, daughter of Raymond Hyatt. My last direct link to the Lovelace/Loveless list, my dad, William Jason Fletcher, passed away last July. This is the first time I have been able to sit down and notify the list. Here is his obituary: >>William Jason Fletcher was born Oct, 27, 1925, in Boone County, Illinois to Benjamin and Amy (Pineger) Fletcher. After graduating from Belvidere High School in 1943, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945. He and Betty June Hueber were married July 10, 1945 in San Angelo, Texas. He graduated in 1950 from the University of Illinois, Champaign, with a degree in agricultural engineering and was a lifelong member of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE). Bill worked for Doane Agricultural Service designing farm and ranch layouts and farm buildings throughout the South and Midwest. He served as associate editor of Successful Farming magazine and editor of Farm Building News magazine. He worked for 22 years in the Farm Safety Division for the National Safety Council in Chicago. Throughout his career he was active in numerous committees with ASAE, including secretary of the Structures Division Steering Committee. He also served on the committee that developed specifications for the triangular slow moving vehicle emblem that is used worldwide on farm and construction equipment. At the National Safety Council, Bill worked with manufacturers and legislators to promote tractor roll-over protection and improving farm safety in general. He also helped the Highway Division of the Council as one of its defensive driving instructors. Bill lived a life of service to others. He was active in each of the United Methodist churches where he lived, including First United Methodist Church in Downers Grove, serving in many leadership capacities, including chairman of the stewardship and staff parish committees and as a member of the trustees. He also sang for many years in the adult chancel choir. Bill also served as a delegate to the annual conference of the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church, and as a member of the Board of Pensions. For more than 20 years, he had a lawn care/snow removal business in Downers Grove. For a number of years after retiring from the National Safety Council, he worked at Wannemaker's Home and Garden Center in Downers Grove. Bill was always eager to share his extensive knowledge about many topics from his varied experiences. Although he has always enjoyed socializing, he also savored "quiet time." Bill is survived by his wife; daughter, Bonnie Eggert (Barry) of Owasso, Oklahoma; sons, Barry (Lynn) of Bloomington and Russell (Debbie) of Bolingbrook; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a younger brother, Alvin.<< So, whenever you see an orange "slow-moving vehicle" sign on a vehicle on the road, think of my Dad! Since his death, another great-grandchild has been added to the descendants and another two are on the way... His line was: William Jason Fletcher (IL-IL) > Benjamin Butler Fletcher (IL-IL) > Olin H. Fletcher (IL-ND) > John Wesley Fletcher (PA-IL) m. Rachel E. Loveless (NY-IL) > Ariel Corbin Loveless (VT-NY) > John Loveless (1772)(NY-NY) . Elijah Loveless (Dutchess County NY) Bonnie Fletcher Eggert
