Hello LOVE List: This is written in response to Shirley's query regarding Gen. John H. LOVE and Richard Hendly (Hendley) LOVE. Richard LOVE was born about 1778 in VA and did indeed serve in the military, or more specifically the Virginia militia. He did not, however, appear to have a very lengthy military career. On pages 291 and 292 of The Lee Chronicle, Studies of the Early Generations of the Lees of Virginia by Cazenove Gardner LEE, Jr., LOVE's wife, Eliza Matilda LEE (granddaughter of Richard Henry LEE) described her husband's brief career in the VA militia during the War of 1812. She declares, "after law and order were once more restored....Mr. Love's company was detailed to look after the British prisoners, who after six weeks were exchanged, and he came home. Thus ended his military career." Eliza always refers to her husband as "Mr. Love," never using a military title. Furthermore, Eliza did not mention in her "Reminiscences" any previous marriage of her husband's. It is possible, of course, that she purposely left out any mention of such, but we have no record of a prior marriage in our family. Eliza's reflections appeared to be fairly straightforward, and I tend to think that she would have mentioned a previous wife. I hope that this information helps in some way! Good evening, I knew I had picked up a piece of this puzzle at one time, it just took a couple of days to "unfile" it. I found Eliza Matilda Love in the 1850 census (Minnesotal Territorial) Dakotah County, the Garrison at Ft. Snelling House 77/family 79 Armstead, Maj. Lewis 33 NC Army Officer Cecelia L. 27 VA W. K. 4 VA (female) Hendricks, Mary 32 Wisc Geo. 1 Minn (male) Love, E. M. 60 VA I was reading this census for a completely different family when I saw this and made note of it.
