I have been able to trace my lineage to Nat Love (famous Black Cowboy, Deadwood Dick). His older brother, Littleton Love, is my great-great grandfather. I have ordered Nat Love's book (you can also read the entire text on-line) but was unable to secure the name of his slaveholder (only to learn that he was "kindly"). I will look into BENJAMIN LOVE as his possible owner (thanks for the information). However, if you have secured any information about this possible slaveholder or Love slaves, please let me know. This has become my brick wall. Thank you.
Article from "The Charlotte Observer," newpaper of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, NC. http://www.charlotte.com/mld/observer/ Posted on Wed, Feb. 12, 2003 Cabarrus throbs with the name of Love Turns out the region's full of the hearty clan JAIME LEVY Staff Writer Looking for Love in all the wrong places? Try Cabarrus County. Cabarrus has the nation's highest concentration of people named Love -- eight times more per capita than the national average -- according to a Valentine's-week study by a San Diego marketing research firm. York, Union, Gaston and Mecklenburg counties aren't far behind Cabarrus, making ours the nation's Love-liest region. Surprised? Look in Charlotte-area phone books, and you'll find dozens of people with the amorous appellation. People like Betsy Love, a Concord interior designer, who kept her maiden name upon marriage rather than lose her Love. Or Rock Hill jeweler Allison Love, who sends out her business mail with the U.S. "Love" stamp. She answers her shop's telephone "Allison Love's Fine Jewelry." Callers respond, "So do I." The Claritas demographers tossed around several mushy monikers -- Romeo, Casanova, Cupid -- in their search for Loves. They tried Lust, too. But even where Lust is popular (first place: Oneida County, N.Y.), Love prevailed. In case you were wondering, it was James Lee Love who wrote the book of Love. Actually, it's more of a pamphlet. It maps the history of the Robert Calvin Grier Love family, which moved to South Carolina around 1766 as part of the wave of Scots-Irish immigrants to the Carolinas. In the history, James Lee Love wrote that the Love handle is an ancient surname of Saxon origin; its early form was "Lufu," meaning "a dear one." Although the Charlotte region has, comparatively, a whole lot of Love, the surname accounts for only a small part of the population. But demographers say no name does much more -- not even Smith, the most popular, which in 1990 identified only slightly more than 1 percent of U.S. residents. Clementeene Love Glover of Gastonia, whose father's family used to have frequent reunions (Love-fests?), said her maiden name is telling: "I'm just a friendly, happy-go- lucky person. I love my family and I love people." "It's a beautiful name, Love," she said. "It's a way of life." There may be plenty of Love to go around, but after nearly a page of Loves in the Cabarrus phone book, there's only one man without: Richard Loveless, who assures us he's not lonely. "I've got a lot of family here," he said. "It just happens to be sisters."

In 1851 the Love family came west and settled on these Illinois prairies in the vicinity of Yorktown, and thus for three-fouths of a century, the Love brothers were vital factors in the Tampico-Yorktown community life. In January 1872 our brother was united in marriage with Miss Imogene L. Hi Jim, Do you have their marriage? George H. Love and Martha A. Cooley, residents of Meigs Co. were married 18 Mar 1877 according to Meigs County Ohio Marriages 1819 - 1913 by Wes Cochran. It is possible that George is the son of my great great grandparents, James and Eliza (Smith) Love who were married in Meigs Co in 1837, in which case he would be the brother of Harriet, Jane, William, Elizabeth, and Clark who are listed in the 1850 Census of Tyler Co VA, and my grandmother Mary Ellen Love, born 1859 in Meigs Co OH. There is also a younger sister named Minerva who marries and moves to Pittsburgh PA. I have not been able to find them in the 1860 or 1870 Census and James has died by 1880. (FYI, if you are looking for James in the 1850 on Ancestry, they have him indexed as Javers Love.) Eliza is listed in the 1880 Census of Meigs living with 2 grandchildren and a sister-in-law. Mary Ellen is living with a family a few doors away as a servant. After 20 years of searching, I am just now beginning to piece together info on this family, so I don't have a lot more info, but if this turns out to be your family, please keep in touch. Okay, I'm back on the list for awhile. I'm trying to straighten out all the John Loves who lived in the late 1700s and early 1800s in Knox Co. I just got a message from someone saying there were two John Loves. I believe there were more than that. Here's mine: JOHN LOVE b.c. 1765-1770, m. Margaret Fleming, d. 1834. Here's the message I just got: Because there was more than one John Love in Knox Co One was 10 years older than the other. One born 1776-married McSpaddin d. 1851One born 1766 - married Orpha Dungan d. 1851The first was the nephew of the second. Both died same year and same county, so maybe if their is a mix up it is not who is who, but who died when and which is buried in any certain cemetery. Other differences is their children's names and dates of birth. I have John 1776 buried in Knox Co. Tn. Cove Springs CemeteryI thought I'd go look at the 1850 census of Knox Co. and try and find them. I couldn't read the page that they were onl Mary Harkey Russell So now, could everyone with a John Love in that time period please check in? Not with too many details at first though. After 35 years, I'm going crazy! Katheryn --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Sign up now
I spoke from memory earlier today - shoulda known better. John's children Sally K. and Hannibal are shown in his brother William's will, as well as John's, not his father, Samuel Sr's. William also mentions Rufus McCauley, s/o Easter McCauley (I have no clue who this is unless it is an illegitimate child), to brother Robert's sons, father Samuel Sr, and cousin, Robert Love of Campbell's station. Samuel Sr. will mentions: TO wife Mary, sons John and Robert, land from William Love's will, grandson Samuel son of David, dec'd., Granddaughters Margaret and Rebecca, daughters of Samuel Love Dec'd, and to Margaret or Rebecka, daughters of Joseph Love. to son Isaac. Samuel Jr was married to Charlotte Bell, after his death she married James Miller, her lawyer in the case to dispute her widows share of the estate. Joseph Love's daughters Margaret and Rebecca are both mentioned in Joseph's will as well as that of his wife, Mary (Bell) Love. Unfortunately Samuel Sr's obituary listed no family, just a brief notice of death. John Love who had the children Sally K and Samuel Hannibal mentioned in William Love's will, married Nancy McSpadden, and as she was a Wear and Armstrong family descendant, there are numerous early cites on this family, noteably a book by Oscar Lyle in which he talked to members of the families to get data. I'm sure there are errors, but it seems to be borne out by records. (Several years ago I lost a program which had many of my notes on John Love. I no longer have my cites on him from Knox Co records. Does anyone else have data on him from Knox County?) The Joseph Love who was sheriff was probably the Joseph Love, son of Samuel Sr because Samuel's son is Joseph L. Love, and in the Oct 1813 County Court Minutes for Knox County, The voting showed 20 votes for Joseph L. Love and 3 for Joseph Myratt. It is my understanding that Joseph Love gave bond for John Love on the guardianship of the Walker children in 1811. I do not know if this is the same Joseph Love. Has anyone seen a second Joseph in Knox county in this timeframe? (Joseph L died in Rhea Co in 1831.) In 1860 Maries Co MO, Pleasant McSpadden Love, son Of John Love and Nancy MCSpadden Love was living next door to his Uncle Isaac Love. Pleasant was the only one of John's children to come to MO. As I said, the son David in Samuels's will and Robert are unknowns to me. I have not figured out which David and Robert they are. Judy
Hi Katheryn, Judy Germann here -- I am very sure about the John Love who was son of Samuel, as John's children, who are well documented through John's will, are also mentioned in Samuel's will as his grandchildren. I am also sure about William, who predeceased his father, and mentioned his father Samuel Sr in his will, as well as Isaac, (my line), as Isaac was mentioned in the will, and was also an admr of William's will. Samuel Jr's children were also mentioned in Samuel Sr's will. Joseph has also been settled. Those we are uncertain about are Robert and David. We have no clues as to which David and Robert were sons of Samuel Sr. We might be able to prove the Robert if we could find the deed where he and John sold the lands they received from their father. His wife would probably have had to sign away dower rights, and her name would be a clue. I have not been able to get the deed as yet. Robert, if he has children, has none mentioned in the will, however, David who is already dead in 1826, has a son named Samuel who is mentioned in Samuel Sr.'s will. If anyone can help us settle which Robert and David are sons of Samuel Sr, I'd really like to hear from you. PS Some years ago I typed and entered the wills of Samuel Sr and John on this list - they should be in the archives.
