Janet Lockert was the daughter of my gggg-grandfather, Aaron Lockert(Lockhart) of Chester Co., SC. From what I can decipher, Cpt. James Love, III, was the son of John Love and Martha Drennan. If I am reading this correctly, John (a tailor) was one of the sons of James Love (a weaver) and Martha Harvey. John's Will of 1802 lists the following children: William, Jane, James, Martha, John, Thomas, Robert, Joseph and Sarah. This will was probated 19 Nov. 1802. It seems that Thomas and Robert married Dowdle sisters and one of the girls married Robert Ellitt(?Elliott). There is evidently a Love family web site on which all this information is posted. I have a lot of info on the Lockert family, but have just started to try to untangle the Love line. James Love married Janet Lockert and William Love married Margery Lockert.

Hello LOVE List: This is written in response to Shirley's query regarding Gen. John H. LOVE and Richard Hendly (Hendley) LOVE. Richard LOVE was born about 1778 in VA and did indeed serve in the military, or more specifically the Virginia militia. He did not, however, appear to have a very lengthy military career. On pages 291 and 292 of The Lee Chronicle, Studies of the Early Generations of the Lees of Virginia by Cazenove Gardner LEE, Jr., LOVE's wife, Eliza Matilda LEE (granddaughter of Richard Henry LEE) described her husband's brief career in the VA militia during the War of 1812. She declares, "after law and order were once more restored....Mr. Love's company was detailed to look after the British prisoners, who after six weeks were exchanged, and he came home. Thus ended his military career." Eliza always refers to her husband as "Mr. Love," never using a military title. Furthermore, Eliza did not mention in her "Reminiscences" any previous marriage of her husband's. It is possible, of course, that she purposely left out any mention of such, but we have no record of a prior marriage in our family. Eliza's reflections appeared to be fairly straightforward, and I tend to think that she would have mentioned a previous wife. I hope that this information helps in some way! John Love of Fort Leavenworth's Co. B (Love's Defeat) is the same man as Gen. John H. Love who commanded a division in defense of Cincinnati in the Civil War (The John Love Papers.) Please correct me if this is in error. The story that I am interested in involves John H. Love's father, who rumor states, was also a military man. It is said that his father, who was from Virginia, was first married to "Luci" Clinton who died in child birth in the early 1800's. He left this child, a son, with his wife's family and later remarried a southern girl in TN, but never returned for his son. We are reaching for a long shot here, but Clinton Love was born in 1804, and he cannot be found in the records of any Love family of that period, and we have suspected that he may have been raised by a family of Clintons. Gen John H. Love's father, if I am correct was Richard Henly Love of Virginia who married Eliza Lee, but I have found no records indicating that Richard was in the service. John had two older brothers who died young and one older brother who served in the U.S. Navy. I am wondering if Clinton might have been a half-brother of John H. Love, and the son by Richard's first marriage. Was Richard Henley Love married briefly to "Luci" (Lucinda or Lucretia, perhaps) Clinton who died young while giving birth to their son? Was this son possibly Clinton Love, b. 1804? And Was Richard Henley Love a General from Virginia? This is one of the best possibilities our branch of researchers has come across in decades that might help us to identify Clinton Love....our brickwall. If you can supply any information about this story, confirming or negating, please do so. We are desperate to learn the truth about our gggrandfather, Clinton Love. :-( Thanks, Shirley

This is off of the Ingram List, an entry by Dianne Ingram: We are just back from an Ingram Family Reunion. I got some information from a fellow reseacher that said John Ingram married Hannah Pressley (2). I never got any information other than that. This was news to me. So I am asking other people who decend from Hannah to help me out here. John's will in Brunswick Co., Va. was signed the same day of his death. 26 Sept. 1786 recorded 20 March 1791. His will named 8 children and 3 children of his deceased son Moses who in 1784. So does that mean maybe he was married first to Hannah?? On 22 FEB 1796 a "Deed of Release" was executed by Patience Ingram, widow of John Ingram. So that means to me she was the last wife. Here is the list of children my researcher said was in the Ingram bible. (But she forgot to make a copy for me). Joseph Berry b: 10 JUL 1745 Unknown Infant b: 1746 Mary Elizabeth b: 15 May 1747 Isabella Rose b: 6 DEC 1749 Moses W. b: Sep. 1751 John W.(III) b: 12 Apr. 1752 Elisha R. b: 3 FEB 1753 Nancy A. b: 8 MAY 1754 Andrew James b: 20 JUN 1755 Elizabeth Gray b: JAN 1756 Sarah Mary b: 9 OCT 1758 Jeremiah T. b: 10 Sep. 1759 Patsy Martha b: Dec. 1760 William B. b: Sep. 1761 Thomas H. b: 1762 Hoping for further information/speculation. Dianne Ingram And asking further about the source for the Bible, I was given the following information: The copy of our Miller/Ingram bible is located in the New Albany Libr. in the state of Indiana. I can't put my hand on the address just at the moment buy maybe you could find it through Google, www.snap.com, or Yahoo. A copy of this bible was made and typed up. The original was held by a DAR searcher who was proving our Ingram line so she could be in the DAR. I understand that bible is still in her line of the family. . . not sure if that bible has survived. I can only hope. Hi Pat, On James Allison Love. Darling Love had a son James Allison Love. Is said that one of this James Allison Love's nephews or nieces stated that he "James Allison Love" was named for his grandfather. Old thinking was that Darling was the son of James (of VA to Cabarrus NC) and therefore this older James would also be named James Allison Love.Allison is a surname. But there are no Allison living among the Love family in VA. The Allison family was prominent in Cabarrus County NC at and before the time Darling was born. So it makes sense that if the thinking was right, James Allison was named not for our old grandsire, but to another younger James Love. This has been a sticking point for so many years. We knew of the marriage of James and Polly Tucker, and we knew of a James who served in the War of 1812; but yet we had no real record to define the life of this younger James Love. The marriage record was either ignored or explained into life record of grandsire Jimmy. This was a brick wall. The discovery of the pension and bounty claim application by Mary Tucker Love Brooks opens the door to new thinking. I believe she and young James [Allison] Love are the parents of Darling et. al. On Mary Elizabeth Ingram Love. All legal records recording the wife of grandsire Jimmy names her as "Mary." Have never seen court documentation where she is "Mary Elizabeth." Another James came through Cabarrus from earlier in Cumberland County NC. This James had a wife "Elizabeth." In all records, she is known as "Elizabeth." ....with no mention of Mary. I think early searchers of our family combined the records for these two to create Mary Elizabeth Love. And by so doing, was able to attach to our James Love the revolutionary war voucher claims attributable to the other James from earlier in Cumberland County. This other James and likely son John Love disappear from Mecklenburg NC by 1785. I think it wrong to make DAR claim on the record of our James Love. I felt good about this until another Love searcher pointed out an entry on the Ingram Family List. Mary Ingram married James Love. Mary's father is John Ingram. This lady hired a researcher who found an Ingram family Bible in Indiana or Illinois. The record was copied and given to the lady and she placed it on the Ingram List. This record names and gives the birth record for the children of John and Patience Berry Ingram. It names "Mary Elizabeth Ingram." I contacted the person who provided the information and was told the record came from another printed source of unknown origin in Indiana. So.....though not believeing earlier searchers would have made this connection via the Bible record, ultimately, the results were correct.
