    1. [LOONEY-L] Copy actual of Will Robert Luney [Sr.]
    2. Madge Crane
    3. During a research trip to Virginia the last week in June 2000, my son and I were shown an actual copy of Robert Luney's Will, dated September 14, 1769. This document is recorded in Botetourt County Will Book A, p. 3, but this is the clerk's copy. The actual Will is flat filed in a folder in the back of the Botetourt County clerk's office (Fincastle) and is available only upon request. The assistant who showed it to us would not let us touch it. She did, however, make us a copy. As far as we know, the existence of this document has never been known to researchers. The actual Will is especially interesting because there is a line in it (crossed out), which does not appear in the recorded version. This can easily be seen near the middle of the Will. Robert was talking about "Next I Leave my beloved Grand son John Luney one shilling sterling ..." Then the line that is crossed out "Next I Give and bequeath to my grand Daughter Lovis ..." The amount bequeathed to her was not stated. No doubt Lovis was the only child of Thomas Looney, the oldest son of Robert, Sr. She is sometimes called Lovice and Louisa and later married James Brigham (who gave the land where Blountville, Sullivan County, Tennessee, is today). The transcription of Robert Luney's Will can be found in Most Distinguished Characters on the American Frontier, Vol. I, pp. 273-74. The actual Inventory is also flat filed in the same folder as the Will. We have tried several times to scan the Will and send it to LOONEY-L, but it will not work for some reason. If you would like a copy of the entire Will, send me your e-mail and I will try to sent it to you directly. If you want a copy off my scanner, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Madge Looney Crane, R R 1, Box 193, Waterford, OH, 45786. The copy I would send will probably be better than the one scanned for the Internet.
