    1. [LOONEY-L] Louisa Looney, dau. of Thomas (2) Looney

    3. Over a year ago (maybe two) there was a discussion about possible children of Thomas (2) Looney. It is known that he had a daughter Lovice or Louisa, who married James Brigham, Sr. There was speculation that there might be another daughter, Mary. It was suggested that maybe Mary married George Birdwell. Recently an abstract of land certificates issued by the Commissioners of the District of Washington and Montgomery Counties, Virginia, was discovered in Mary B. Kegley's Early Adventures On The Western Waters, Vol. II, p. 106, which makes it clear that Thomas (2) Looney had only one daughter. "James Brigham and Luisa his wife, late Louisa Looney, sole daughter and heir to Thomas Looney deceased, 400 acres in Aps [Abb's] Valley, on both sides of the Bluestone to include Moor's and Poages' improvements, settled by Thomas Looney 1754." This is also the only known record which states that Thomas (2) Looney settled in Abb's Valley. Many histories have documented that Absalom (2) Looney (for whom the Valley is named) settled there by 1753-54. It is also known that he was forced to abandon his settlement because of Indian attacks. The French and Indian War had started (or was about to start) and such a remote settlement came under attack first by the Indians. Some even believe that Thomas Looney was killed during this time, which is certainly possible.
