    1. [LOONEY-L] IOM questions
    2. Barbara Cathey
    3. I don't know if I am sending this to the proper address. A submission to Looney-L was forwarded to me by my daughter. She sent it because I am going to the Isle of Man in May. Have you received responses to your questions about Ballagilley? I was in the IOM in 1993 and purchased "A History of Kirk Maughold" by W and C Radcliffe. According to land records, Looneys did not own Ballagilley until the generation after Robert. Thomas Looney (1750-1826) purchased part of Ballagilley. His nephew, John Looney, was farming 30 acres of Ballagilley in 1851. Thomas Looney's Parents John Looney and Margaret Kelvin or Kelvie were contemporaries of our Robert. They purchased part of the half quarterland of Crowcreen in 1748. It is near Ballagilley. Looneys prior to this were found on "staff" land in the 17th century and were listed among cottage holders in what is now Ramsey in 1600. John and Margaret were said to have come from Ramsey when they bought their part of Crowcreen. Margaret's family came from Scotland. I feel there is a connection between these early Manx Looneys and our Robert, but there is no documentation. The Ballagilley connection may have come from later generations corresponding with family in the old country or more likely from the visit of M. D. Looney to the Isle of Man in 1927 where he found the Looney homestead, Ballagilley Farm, and assumed that it was owned by Looneys back to the time of Robert's birth. I have heard family traditions that Robert left the IOM because of religious persecution and that an ancestor fought with Marlborough at Flanders. Also a connection to the Derby family that ruled Man for many years (I feel this was most likely from one of our American Looney's habit of saying that something or other made his "Derby blood run cold" which could have been said by a supporter or Derby as well as family). Let me know what else you have found. Barbara Looney Cathey Jacksonville, Fl
