I was looking back through some of my old e-mail files and found reference to your Joseph. In these messages, they refer to him as James (Joe) R. Looney. I have a James Looney b. 1836 in my Moses Looney Sr. line who is unaccounted for. His father was Joseph "Joe" Looney b. 1810 d. Aug 1885 near Texarkana, TX. Joe and his son are both mentioned during the execution of the Will of Moses Looney Sr. of Lawrence County Ala. (1855). Apparently they had moved off and the family had lost contact with them. James was mentioned as being a minor (<21). Descendants of Moses Looney Sr. are known to have been in the early Mississippi territory and my Moses Looney Jr. group were in Louisiana when the Civil War started. I wonder if this James is not in fact, your James "Joe" R. Looney. I'll do a little more checking and will send you what little I have on Joe and James.
