    1. [LOONEY-L] Intro, Thank Yous, and Robert Looney Manx Query
    2. Soheyr Azar
    3. Hi, I have just joined this list and I am looking forward to talking to all of you great people. I am a Looney by marriage. My husband is descended from the Robert (1), Adam (2), Robert (3), Noah (4), Morgan Harbin (5). I have been doing Looney research off and on for almost 20 years by myself except for the correspondence help of a couple of wonderful people--Varney Graves of Fayetteville, GA (an authority on Morgan Harbin Looney) and the wonderful Liz Looney in Washington, DC. I have only recently started researching on-line for Looneys and was amazed! Wednesday night I found Larry Johnson's wonderful web-site, and I really want to thank you Larry for all your hard work. Through Larry's site I found the Tilson book (another big thank you to the ones who entered all of that on-line), Jim Sullivan's great Looney Family Homepage (lots of great stuff, but I was especially thrilled to find Mary Lee Murray's photos of the Ballagilley croft remains and Maughold graveyard), Ed & Tracy Looney's great Welcome to The Looney Family page (the Elsie Stroud booklets are a treasure and I was estatic to find the Cubbin notes), and Steve Looney's Native American Looneys page (didn't know about that branch--very interesting). Thank you all for so generously sharing research that I know took a LONG time to gather and place on the web-sites. (Their URLs seem to be at the bottom of each message I checked in the archives. If you haven't been to their sites yet--I know Floyd hasn't--GO!) I am ever in your debt and I hope to repay you very soon. My Manx Query is that in April we are going back to Man. We were there for a very short weekend in June of 1998 and didn't have time or realize the import to search for Ballagilley. But we did go to the Kirk (church) at Maughold (which a native told us is pronounced "Morn") to see the wonderful Manx Crosses--we have become enamoured of Celtic Crosses. We were amazed to find Looney graves in the graveyard. Later we found shops in Ramsey and Peel with Looney names, though we didn't have time for chats with the owners. The island is so beautiful. We wanted to see as much as possible. The village at Creggnash (sp?) is a fantasticaly preserved croft village. (If you haven't seen the movie Waking Ned Devine, see it--it was mostly filmed there.) I can imagine Robert being born in a very similar croft. So, on to my question. (Yes, I know I am too long-winded!) To prevent duplication of efforts that have gone before, what do we KNOW about Robert (1) Looney's and his wife's (Barbara Stover???--don't know the documentation on her either) Manx heritage? I found parents and sibling on the LDS site, but have not had a chance to contact the people there. Since they said Robert's parents (they had John and Llewellen--good Welsh last name) and siblings were all born and died in Augusta Co. VA. With their having John born Abt. 1604 prior to the colony of Jamestown, this research did not seem very valid to me. Especially since I knew approx. when Robert et. al. arrived and moved to VA. So I guess my real question is what is the documentation of Robert Looney being from Ballagilley? I have the Ed Sayle No. American Manx Assoc. article (Spring 1974) and that and Tilson seem to be the source of all the "Robert Looney, a Manx farmer from Ballagilley, Maughold" quotes. In my quick skim of the April archives of this list last night, it seems we still don't know the ship Robert and family came over. (I searched in the PA archives about 15 years ago and no luck.) So how do we know he came from Ballagilley? I'm sure this is old stuff to many of you , so if you will point me towards the correct source or reference in the archives, I will be glad to find it myself. I started searching for Robert (1) on the web so I could know as much as possible about him before I went back to Man. When I go, I want to try to find out more, so all help will be appreciated and all information I find I will be glad to share. Teresa McVeigh Louisville, KY (No kin--so far--to Timothy, but descended from James McVeigh, b. c. 1819 in Ireland or the Isle of Man, and came to GA from Man in the 1830s. So you see I have another reason to go back to Man besides the beauty of it all.)
