There are others out there who are possibly in for the big surprise too. A few years back I was looking at some of my Looney relations that lived in northern Alabama when the Civil War broke out. Since some served in the 1st Alabama Regiment, I and apparently others assumed that they fought on the side of the South just because it was an Alabama unit. I even saw some papers that some of this relations descendants put together showing the symbols of the South (CSA). Before I learned otherwise, I even tried to correct someone from the Lawrence County Historical Commission about an apparent error concerning this individuals Civil War service. As it turns out, the 1st Alabama was a unit that fought for the north (USA). This all relates to the family of Moses and Mary (Guest) Looney who lived in northern Alabama. You have probably heard of the "Incident at Looney's Tavern" which occurred as a direct result of the Civil War, about the Civil War exploits of William B. "Black Fox" Looney who helped others in the South go north to fight for the Union Army. Maybe about his brother Anderson M. Looney, who served with the 1st Alabama. Moses Looney Jr., another brother, had two sons (one was my great grandfather) who served with the South (CSA) during the Civil War. Like many I grew up supporting one side in the Civil War over the other. In my case I sided with the CSA. In later years after learning that there was nothing civil about the Civil War and what an absolute mistake it was for father to be fighting son, brother to be fighting brother, etc., I figured out the fact that there is no glory in killing or in war. I have accepted the fact that neither side was justified or glorified by it. I no longer support one side over the other. I view the Civil War as a mistake and a tragedy because it divided America and family and it cost us dearly, both in the destruction to our country and in the loss of family. North or South, I no longer take sides, I view them all as being Americans who got caught up in the tragedy of war.
