Hello listers, I am looking for any one who might have Looney descendants who were in Marion or Bledsoe Co. TN between 1830 and 1850. Parts of these counties became Sequatchie Co. TN. I was able to find Benjamin Looney b. 1796, son of Benjamin Looney and Polly Galbreath, in Bledsoe Co. in 1840, but I believe he was also in Marion Co. in 1836 right across the county line.... Other Looney's in the area at the time where Benjamin's brother Arthur G. Looney...and I believe maybe a brother of Benjamin's, John Looney who m. Margaret Hilliard....a Peter Looney and Moses Looney(maybe a brother) Benjamin Looney B. 1796 was living in District 10 of Bledsoe Co in 1840 and District 1 of Marion Co. both of these areas became Sequatchie Co. after 1850.... If anyone is researching this area and line I would be interested in talking with you. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Several of the Looney family at one time lived in Mississippi. My David Reason Looney lived in Pontotoc Count, MS for several years. He owed a large plantation there which was overtaken by the North during the Civil War. David was born in Sumner County, TN; he also lived for a time in Lauderdale County, AL and Fannin County, TX Guess they loved the travel & excitement of a new adventure.... If you hear anything, Melinda, please pass on. I have been researching this group for years and have not come up with anything. If this William Looney is truly from Vermont, it is unlikely he is from the original Robert Looney who immigrated to the Isle of Man. However, it is interesting that he was born in Vermont and migrated to Mississippi. Could be census taker's error on his birth location. DAVID LOONEY OWNED ORIGINAL LOT IN NASHVILLE On August 16, 1784, David Looney was deeded lot No. 33 in Nashville. The town trustees were the grantor. He paid four pounds and the lot was an acre, or a little more. Several other people received identical deeds (except for grantee's names and lot number). One possible explanation would be that officials were trying to get Nashville to grow. The condition in the deeds called for the construction of "one well framed square log brick or stone house sixteen feet square at least......" within 3 years. The lot was only about 600-700 feet from the public square, so it was centrally located. This discovery was especially interesting because this bit of information hasn't been discussed much. It is not known if David Looney used this lot. He had land in Sumner County (20 miles northeast of Nashville) and in what became Maury County (30-40 miles south of Nashville), so this would have been a good place to "lay over" as he travelled between his various tracts of land in the Middle District (Tennessee after 1796). It is known that David Looney owned this tract for the rest of his life (until 1804-05). In his Will David Looney listed his land and described who would get it, but failed to mention lot No. 33 in Nashville. On May 20, 1818, Jeremiah Taylor (David's son-in-law), acting in behalf of the heirs of David Looney, deceased, sold lot No. 33 to Robert C. Foster ( a lawyer) for $100.00. Robert Looney (David's son) of Smith County sold his share to Foster for $1.00 on December 19, 1821. The deed says Robert got this land "....as one of the Legatees of my Father David Looney....." David Looney (Jr) of Randolph County, Illinois, sold his interest to Foster for $5.00 on June 3, 1822. Using maps in the Tennessee State Archives and Library, the exact locastion of this lot was found to be on Third Aenue (old College Stre! et) just before the railroad tracks. It is right across from the intersection of Jo Johnston Street with Thirt Avenue. Today parking lots, railroad tracks and large buildings cover this land. Madge Looney Crane and Phillip L. Crane We made another trip in early August to see Disney World in Orlando, Florida. We made four side trips to see---what else?---four places with Looney connedtions. Will write them up later.
DATA (TAX LISTS, LAWSUITS, ETC.) Comparing two Peter Looneys in Sumner County One of the questions often discussed by Looney researchers is "Which Peter Looney signed the Cumberland Compact (1780) ?" Peter Looney (later Luna), son of Peter Looney, and Peter Looney, son of Absalom Looney, both lived in Sumner County (called Davidson 1784-86) from 1779 to about 1819. Peter Luna had moved to Marshall County by 1820. Between the years 1779 to about 1819, the records in Sumner County are very difficult to sort out. They owned several tracts of land, were in lawsuits, etc. One (but not necessarily the same one) was captain, got fined, and owned slaves. During the trip several Sumner Co. tax records were collected, and many of them list Peter Looney P and Peter Looney H. It is believed that Peter Looney (son of Peter Looney) married Mary Pitman (thus P for him) and Peter Looney (son of Absalom Looney) married Rachel Harman (H for him). Many of these tax records list the number of acres and the location. This will be very helpful in sorting out the various tracts owned by Peter Looney. A couple of lawsuits were searched, and each had signatures. Hopefully these signatures can be compared to the one on the Cumberland Compact. If anyone knows where to find the actual signatures, please send the location. The records pertaining to this topic have not been studied yet, but any conclusions will be reported at another posting.
Dear List Can anyone help me to research my LOONEY'S. I have my Gt. grandmother born 1847, Goodge St, London, W.1. ELIZABETH. Her father was THOMAS, born 1821, Manchester. His father was JAMES, born 1767, possibly in the Isle of Man, married Elizabeth ROBINSON at Manchester Cathedral and all their children christened there. They lived at 5 Style St., Manchester he was a small shopkeeper. His son Thomas, was a tailor. Another son Francis was an amateur geologist, and also preached against children working down the mines. He was also assistant librarian at Manchester main library. Would love to be in touch with others on this line. Irene of Seattle former Londoner.
REPORT ON PETER LOONEY'S CEMETERY NEAR COTTONTOWN, SUMNER COUNTY, TENNESSEE Peter Looney (son of Absalom Looney) was buried on his farm on Station Camp Report on Peter Looney's Cemetery near Cottontown, Sumner County, Tennessee Peter Looney (son of Absalom Looney) was buried on his farm on Station Camp creek, Sumner County, Tennessee. the cemetery is at the intersections of Cummins Road and Station Camp Creek Road. It is located in the middle of a big cornfield. It is unfenced, but doesn't need to be since no animals run in the cornfield. A bunch of large trees have grown in the area. Since there were large trees in the cemetery in the middle of the cornfield, the location seemed odd. Peter Looney's marker was standing solid.. Beside his was the marker for his wife, Rachel (believed to be Harman). You can read the names on both, but other letters are covered with moss. This cemetery seems to be in pretty good hands.
(Very frustrating couple of days--my e-mail was off and hope they have it repaired.) REPORT ON PETER LUNA'S CEMETERY Marshall County, Tennessee Peter Luna (son of Peter Looney) had lived much of his life in Sumner County, TN. By 1820 he moved his family to Marshall County, along with most of his large family. His farm was along Fishing Ford Road, about __ miles below Lewisburg. The discovered after some effort. The little plot (no more than 15 by 12 feet) has a wire fence around it with posts set in concrete. The fence has been pushed in the front. Large animals would be able to get in. Since the space inside is limited, any animal that would get it could do serious damage. Peter Luna's marker is still standing solid, but the lettering (except name) on the marker is nearly gone. Mary Luna's marker is broken and flat on the ground. Another marker stands in the row, assumed to be Peter's second wife, Elizabeth Hogan. Another! large marker rested up against a tree. This cemetery needs a repair crew to go in and re-set two or three posts and fix the fence.
Would like to know DAVID LOONEY'S parents please!! I found I don't have him in my database for some reason, and being new to this list, maybe missed it from earlier postings! I am from the Peter Luna (b.1785) line. Thank you, Kathy
Madge and Phill, Great to know that you are still able, and willing, to make these trips and to share some of the findings with us. Unfortunately, most of us are no longer able to do this in-depth research. Our hearts and minds are willing but the bodies get weak??? Or is it visa versa?? HA! We all thank you so very much for continuing the searches that benefit us all. Nita Fry
