Does anyone have any idea of how (if at all), the family of Lewis M. Loney (& wife Hannah Aminda) of the 1870 (Rome), Floyd Co., Ga. Census are connected to the Main Looney branches ? This family is also found in the 1860 (Summitt), Blount Co., AL. Census. They were both born in Ga. and they had a son named George Loney, who was born in Ga. about 1866. I'm wondering if this may be our elusive G.W. Looney, born in Ga. about March 1864. John C. Sears _JSears2111@aol.com_ (mailto:JSears2111@aol.com)
I am so happy to see this Looney research in Ga., I hope someone can help me with my brick wall. My gg grandmother was Lydia "Liddy" Looney b. abt 1808 in Ga. She married Levy/Levi London in Maury Co., Tn. in 1829. About 1830 they went to Illinois for a while, but returned to Maury Co., tn. The only Looney family that I can't account for in Ga. is Joseph Looney b. 1807 Ga.shown below He was married in the same area as all the other Looney families lived at that time, 1830 Franklin Co., Ga census Joseph Looney 20/30 b. 1800-1810 Male 0/5 b. 1825-1830 Male 0/5 b. 1825-1830 Male 5/10 b. 1820-1825 Fem 20/30 b. 1800-1810 Everyone says this is the Joseph Looney, son of Adam 4, Robert 3, Adam 2, Robert 1, who married Martha McNeil b. abt 1803 Ga. John, Thanks for this most informative report; however, I take exception to your statement relating the extinction of the passenger pigeon to the cutting of the forests. Forests in 1914, when the last pigeon died, were more than adequate. The passenger pigeon was slaughtered wholesale by hunters and trappers who sought the birds as a cheap source of meat. The following link is just one of the many sources available for this conclusion. http://www.eco-action.org/dt/pigeon.html Again, I enjoyed your Looney information. Best regards, Glenn Looney (and Cherokee descendant) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JSears2111@aol.com wrote: >I was thrilled to see so many recent postings regarding Looney families in >GA. and am hopeful that someone will be able to connect our branch to the >proper lineage. Varley Graves wrote about the Looney family in 1977 in Fayetteville, GA paper. The following is what I read: Morgan Harbin Looney was written up by Varley Graves in VIGNETTES OF HISTORY on December 15, 1977 in the Fayette GA newspaper. Mr and Mrs Hal Daniell of East Point have asked about Morgan Harbin Looney. Morgan Harbin Looney, the oldest child of Noah and Frances Cleveland McNiel was born in Fair Play, SC near the east banks of the Tugaloo River and only a few miles from Hartwell, Carnesville and Parkertown where he would spend his childhood and receive his early education. He was named Morgan in honor of the celebrated Nancy Hart of Revolutionary War fame. Nancy Morgan married Captain Benjamin Hart from near "Abbs Valley. They named their oldest son Morgan to perpetuate her maiden name and the name Morgan was quickly picked up by natives of Hart County, also named in her honor. About three miles southwest of Hartwell is a marker of granite with the inscription "Ah-yeh-li A-lo'hee" which in Cherokee Language means "center of the world" and so it seemed to the Cherokee Indians who had inhabited his area for centuries, since from this verdant plateau numerous streams flowed and they used it for their council meetings. Centuries before the Cherokees came the "Mound Builders" who had left their artifacts. Also near was a pigeon-roost where the migration of the passenger pigeon took place in the autumn of each year. At one time about 150 years ago this bird was the most numerous of any in all of North America. The birds came for the nuts and acorns, but when the forest were cut, the nuts disappeared and so the birds became extinct. The last one died in the Cincinnati Zoo Sept. 1, 1914. The "Mound Builders" left only traces of their existence, the Cherokee Indians wee replaced by descendants of the hardy pioneers and members of the Army of the Revolution the passenger pigeon is gone, but not so the influence and dedication of those who came from near the "center of the world" to teach and to preach in the New World. After teaching at Parkerstown on the banks of Shoal Creek, Morgan Harbin Looney went to Palmetto and then to Fayetteville to open the Fayette Seminary in 1857. Here he wrote "Southern Arithmetic," became a polished orator and writer and in 1861 went to Gilmer, Texas, where he opened "The Looney School." For ten years it was the most popular school in northeast Texas. From Gilmer, Texas, he went to Fayetteville and Bentonville in Arkansas, then back to Texas until 1881 when he came back to Hartwell, Clarksville, Franklin and Palmetto, Georgia. But in 1884 he went back to Denton, Texas to a school with 406 pupils. In the fall of 1895, Morgan Harbin Looney came to Royston, GA, and while there built a modern brick school which was the envy of the entire area. He remained there for several years. He went to Ila, Ga and here his wife, Cora Edwards Looney, who had taught music in the various schools, died in 1899, Morgan then went back to Hartwell where he was living with his daughter, Myrtice Looney Walters, when he died June 20, 1901. He was buried in the Hartwell Cemetery. The inscription on his brave there reads "To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die."
The following is from a book: "History of Franklin County, Georgia Noah and Joseph Looney married sisters. Daughters of John McNeil and Fannie Cleveland, a daughter of John Cleveland. I was thrilled to see so many recent postings regarding Looney families in GA. and am hopeful that someone will be able to connect our branch to the proper lineage. Toward that end, I concentrated my efforts on tracing the 1st spouse of our G.W. Looney in the hope that his family may have lived in / near hers through the years. Here's what I have: George Washington Looney; b. 23 March 1864 in Ga. (on headstone in Ellisville, MS.); (24 Nov 1863 in Ga. IAW Death certif.); March 1864 in Ga. (1900 Madison Co., Ga. census); 1864 in Ga. (1910 Lawrence Co., AL. census); the 1920 & 1930 census' seem to confirm the 1864 birthyear. All sources confirm birthplace as Ga. and state that both parents (always un-named) were also born in Ga. On 25 February 1886, in Madison Co., Ga., he married Mary "Lee" Eaton. In tracing "Lee's" ancestry, I learned the following: Mary "Lee" Eaton was born on 8 March 1870 in the Hartwell District of Hart Co., Ga. to James H. Eaton and his wife Ionia Frances (maiden name not yet determined). "Lee" had two older brothers (Benjamin F. / bc. 1861 and James W. / bc. 1863), both born in Ga. Census records locate the family of James H. & Ionia Eaton as follows: 12 July 1860 / Carnesville District, Franklin Co., Ga. 1 July 1870 / Hartwell District, Hart Co., Ga. 3 June 1880 / Carnesville District #26, Franklin Co., Ga. He had a sister named Jane Eaton , who was born about 1838 in Ga. This family is also located in the 1860, Carnesville Dist.; Franklin Co., Ga. census. Pat: You wrote: >Teresa, thanks for your posts. Be careful what you wish for....I have more.....! This was the first chance I've ever had to go to Hart County to research and I was only there for 3 hours prior to a Looney wedding, so I only researched Looneys. But I found a good bit. I will spare you all (and myself typing) the extensive monographs I found on Morgan and his brothers George and Martin V. I have LOTS on them already if anyone is interested. There seem to be few in the Adam 2 line on the list, so I am thrilled to have found Betty as a long lost "cousin." Maybe more cousins will come out of the woodwork. And maybe others can identify some of the unknowns. And help me find out more about Adam 2 and Robert 3. When I get a chance I will try to look and see if I have anything for Brenda and Jane. My Morgan lived and taught in AR a number of years and so they may have known they were cousins. I have searched for items on AR Looneys a long time because Morgan's wife died there, the children were split up and I haven't been able to find them again until they were grown. Where were they living? I would be interested in knowing WHICH William Looney Brenda and Jane are descended from. I've always found in genealogy that the more I share, the more I get back. Sometimes messages I sent out years ago bear fruit--I found a long lost 1st and a 3rd cousin that way who I hadn't seen since childhood. Genealogists are wonderful, caring, sharing people. History of Hart County (GA), John William Baker, 1933, 3rd printing 2000, Wolfe Publishing, Fernandina Beach, FL, 32035, located in the Hart County GA Library, abstracted by Teresa McVeigh 4 June, 2004 p. 39 First Jail The first jail for the county was a wooden two-story building, located on Lot No. 6, in the original plan of the town of Hartwell, which lot was bought by the Judges of the Inferior court from Micajah CARTER, for the sum of $50.57. The contract for the building of the jail was let by the Justices of the Inferior Court to Judge Noah LOONEY, for the contract price of $905.00 on 13th day of April, 1855, and for the faithful performance of carrying out the contract Judge LOONEY executed a bond payable to the Justice of the Inferior Court in the sum of $1810.00 and gave John D. PARKER as security on said bond. As stated this jail was a two-story building, weatherboarded and painted on the outside. We have no record of the inside structure or how the walls and the other parts were arranged. On December 17, 1855 Judge LOONEY was given an extension of time in which to complete the contract which prolonged until March 1st, 1856. p. 52 Second County Jail The first jail, which was built by Judge Noah LOONEY during the year 1855-6, was destroyed by fire some time prior to December 4, 1866, as it appears of record that the Justices of the Inferior court on that date contracted with John A. JOHNSON for the erection of a new jail. p 131-2 Parkertown (Academy) The first school in the community was known as Pulliam's Academy, and later located at Parkertown and known as shola Creek Academy. The School at Parkertown was famous all over northeast Georgia. It is said that the school building was the first in this section to be fitted with glass windows. It was built in 1845 and the first teacher was C.H. SPEARS, a pupil of Cecil HAMMOND, a graduate of Yale, who taugh school at Carnesville, Ga., for years. SPEARS taught the school one year and was succeeded by Morgan H. LOONEY, a classmate of his at HAMMOND's school. After Morgan H. LOONEY had taught the school for several years, Hon. B.B. PARKER took charge of the school. He, assisted by his wife, successfully taught the school for many years. Hi Brenda, Zadie's brother Henry is my grandfather. William was married to Sarah Looney, her father was Tipton Looney, his father was Eps Looney and his father was William. I think thats how it goes as I don't have my notes infront of me. I have abit of info on both the Looneys and the Nipps and even some on the Jones as I think Sam Jones was my grandmother Rice's brother. Small family. My notes aren't very well formatted at this time but I will be more than happy to share what I have. Please let me know your email address and I will share what I have. Guess that makes us cousins! Best Regards, Jane

Hurray - bring it on. Need a little action around here. Nita I've been trying to get around to typing up some stuff I found recently on my husband's lines. I don't think anyone on this list is in this line (Noah s/o Robert s/o Adam s/o Robert) but you never know who it might help. Teresa McVeigh New Orleans, LA
