    3. Hi Rhonda, You must have missed a note or two. There was an advertising agency in Georgia that tried to use the mail server at Indiana to send out a few THOUSAND solicitations. It trashed the server and we were set adrift without a paddle in cyberspace. Fortunately, Larry Stephens found us a new home with RootsWeb. We're there now. I have received utilities and passwords for all but the Looney list though. You can send to LOONEY-L@rootsweb.com to post to our old list at our new home. If you know someone who wants to subscribe or if you want info or help, send a note to LOONEY-L-REQUEST@rootsweb.com with your (their) command on the first line and "info"; "help"; and "quit" on subsequent lines. Like this: subscribe info help dir * quit If you want the info and maintain your subscription, just leave off the "subscribe" command. 2. Hello I read about your connections with Liz Looney and wanted to say that I received some of her research work from another Looney descendant. I tried writing to her but received no reply. I probably have an old address. Anyway, I would like to be a part of the list. I descend from Martha Mary Looney who married Jesse Carlton. They lived in Marion/Sequatchie Counties in TN. She was the daughter of John, son of Robert, son of Benjamin, son of Robert, Jr., son of Robert the original! Thanks for your help. cj email: GiarsCJRJ@aol.com

    3. Hi, Ya'll! Great to have you "back!" I spoke with Elizabeth Looney yesterday, and I was reminded just what a remarkable lady she is! We think it's hard to remember who's who in our particular lines of the Looney family, but Elizabeth KNOWS IT ALL! She's such a joy. She says her cataract surgery (two of them) will sideline her for about 2 months total. I gave her the best wishes of the entire Looney Bin as she goes through this. And, Sully, she thinks you are adorable and can't wait for your next visit, you devil, you! Mary Looney Dallas, Texas

    1. Re: Elizabeth Looney Update
    2. I had two very nice visits with Elizabeth. She truely has done an incredible amount of research on the Looney Line. My head is still swimming from just the information on my line (Joseph Looney). She loaned me photographs she had taken of the Joseph Looney Homestead where remains of root cellars and stone chimneys were visible in 1960 when the photo's were taken. I have since digitized these photo's where they can be viewed at the usual web site address (http://members.aol.com/jsully7/index.html) under Biography's. She suggested that others might be interested in her compiled list of Looney Genealogy references. I have since typed these up and am in the process of posting them at the site above, with her permission. Also, Ms. Looney has asked me to compile some old genealogy charts drawn up on an extremely large sheet of paper. If I get the green light, I can post this information to share with others, too. Elizabeth is bothered by some physical problems (hard to get around, etc) but her mind is as nimble as ever. I would like to post a bio on her extensive accomplishments, as they are impressive. And you know ... she is only about 5 miles away and I've just now made her acquaintence. Like others, she had been in contact with others in my family. Wow! Jim Sullivan

    3. I don't have any admin capabilities, tho. I don't know if Pat or Jim do either. When Karen gets a list back up, she sends a note to the list owner giving them the link to the utilities they need and a password. That hasn't come yet. Hopefully, we'll all be real nice and won't blow things up before she does. :) Actually, SmartList looks like it'll really make listowning a lot easier. When it gets four bounces from an address, it automatically unsubs that address from the list. It's no big deal. You'll know because you'll get a notice that you've been unsubbed. Just send a note to LOONEY-L-REQUEST @ROOTSWEB.COM with the single line command "subscribe". We also have a digest version where you get a days' worth of messages in one E-Mail message. If there's a lot of volume, you might get a couple or more in the day. I doubt we'd be more than a one-digest-per-day list. Send a note to LOONEY-L-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM with "unsubscribe" as the only line then send a note to LOONEY-D-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM with the line "subscribe" (don't put in the quotes in these commands). IF YOU DO subscribe digest, don't post to it. Post to LOONEY-L@ROOTSWEB.COM or only those subscribed to the -D list would get your posts if you post to the wrong one. BTW, thanks to Larry W. Johnson, J. Patrick Looney, Doris Werner & David Manney for forwarding me copies of our List Welcome Message. I don't mind getting multiple copies at all. Makes me feel kind'a good ta have all that help. :) I'll have the new Welcome Message posted as soon as I find out what files are available for retrieving. All the other modifications are already done. Ed Looney EGLooney@Airmail.Net List Owner: BRANCH-L; CHILDERS-L; HEACKER-L; LITTRELL-L Co-Owner: LOONEY-L Assistant: ROBERTS-L

    2. I am glad to hear that Liz Looney is still active in the Looney research.... I corresponded with her several times years ago after she contacted my aunt, Helen Luna , of Memphis, TN. We are of the Elisha Luna line and my brother John's death ended our particular branch. I certainly wish her well with her surgery and hope she bounces back for much more fruitful searching! 3. HI LOONEY Relations, Glad to see you back. Missed ya'll. In a recient letter from Elizabeth Looney of DC, she expresses her gratitude for the mailing list we put together for her. If there are any others of this group who wish to have their names, address and phone numbers added to the list, please let me know. I will update the listing and forward to each person on the list (along with Elizabeth). Elizabeth also said she will be having her eyes operated on June 2nd, Cataracts. She will be out of commission for awhile and will not be able to do her genealogy. I believe they will do one eye at a time so it may be several weeks (?) before she is back in shape to do genealogy. If you send her written queries or letters in the mean time, she may be a little slow in responding. She says Jim Sullivan paid her a couple of visits. She speaks very well of you Jim. Jim, How about a report of your visit with Elizabeth? Did she provide you with any new information on the LOONEY relations? Will go for now, Larry Johnson Ft. 3. There's still some administrative stuff going on behind the scenes, but I guess (if this messages goes through) we're up. We still have to get a Welcome Message built (rebuilt) and some other minor stuff (like checking the member list for mistakes). Does anyone out there have a copy of the Looney Welcome Message? It had a summary of Maiser commands and a brief diatribe on traditions of the origins of the Looney name. If you have a copy, could you forward it to me at EGLooney@Airmail.Net? I'd certainly appreciate it! Pat's looking for her copy and I HAVE gotten a copy back from my CHILDERS list, but there's some stuff that is particularly LOONEY that I'd like to include in our new one. 2. THANK YOU!!! I just printed the census information and I am hurrying off to check it against my records, you did provide one very important thing that I noticed right away. Jesse Nelson and his wifes birthplace. I did not have this before and have been totally lost on this line of my family. Thank you so very much. I believe there is something there with the Looney's listed too, but need to check my records, will let you know. Thanks, Thanks, Thanks. Thanks Again, S. Smith gabriel@clas.net

    2. Thanks to Diane Croak for saying you would look up the census info I requested, but please don't go to such trouble, I will get them somehow. I can always order them later. I just don't want you to make a special trip. That is so kind of you and if you are going to do some research of your own and have the time and really want to, thanks. Thanks Again, S. 3. Help!!! I found some listings for the 1850 Greene County Tennessee Census which may be my missing link. If anyone out there has these pages from the census and has the time to post them for me, I would be most appreciative, as I do not have access to these census rolls. I am unfortunately unemployed and can't afford to have a researcher go and copy them for me so I will have to ask that if anyone out there has these particular pages, please post them. Thanks So Much: Loony, Catherine Page 170 A Louny, William Page 170 A Luney, Edward W. I am working on families affiliated with my Looney line named: Forney, Gabriel, Abernethy, Humphries, West, Nelson, and others, if anyone else has a Looney connected to these families please let me know and we can compare information to see if there is a link between our families. 3. Hello All, Sorry everyone, the address for Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia, Augusta County Court Records, was type incorrectly. Try this: http://bl-12.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/volume_1/or01_12.htm This should take you to the first page, then scroll down to the bottom of the page to find the option for INDEX. This will lead you to a page which is still under construction, but start searching where you will, you may be surprised what you find there. Sorry for the typing error. Hope this works!!! If not please let me know. Thanks, S. Smith gabriel@clas.net

    3. Hello Everyone, I hope I am posting this correctly, first time doing this on my own, so bear with me. I recently found some information on various Looney's I believe belong to the Robert Looney line. Please search the records in Chronicles of the Scotch Irish Settlement, Augusta County Virginia Court Records at: http://bl-12.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/volume_/or07_95.htm#page95 There is an index but it is currently under construction. I was searching for information on William Robinson when I found mention of Peter Looney the son of Robert Looney being given a guardian. There is mention of other Looneys in these records, but the section on "L" is still under construction, please check various other families and you may find information which will be usefull to you. If anyone has difficulty finding the page, please post here and I will repost this message. I hope this helps someone, there are just bits and pieces of information at the site but who knows! Thanks, S. Smith gabriel@clas.net

I am hoping to get this line traced so I can give it to everyone and hope this makes us feel more connected. If anyone out there is related to William Jesse Looney, I have copies of court documents from the Jackson Riverside Library microfilm, I will be happy to share this information. 3. More information concerning a possible will of John Looney (3), of Robert (2), Robert (1) Looney. Maury County Circuit Court Minute Book, 24 June 1820, pp374,375. THOMAS HOPKINS vs. JOHN LOONEY, Garnishee: "JOHN DERRYBERRY being summoned as Garnishee and duly sworn deposeth.....he is executor of the estate of JOHN LOONEY who was father to the defendant and as executor of the said estate has collected some money that the amount of sales of the estate is $1720........that $70 is to be taken out of said $1720 and that the balance is to be divided into 6 shares to1/6 part of which the defendant is entitled agreeably to the will of John Looney, Sr." A similar statement by JOHN GRAHAM follows. JOHN GRAHAM says he is the executor of JOHN LOONEY, etc. This information is recorded in Leroy Tilton's Manuscripts, Part II, page 9. Elizabeth Looney and I have assumed that Thomas Hopkins, John Derryberry and John Graham married daughters of Capt John Lonney (3) and Elizabeth Renfroe and were protesting the way that John Looney (4) of St Clair Co, AL administered the estate. Does anyone have information on these possible sons-in-law of John Looney (3)? Do any of you have a female Looney who married into the Hopkins Family? Certainly Sarah Looney, daughter of my Robert Looney (4) of Cumberland Co, KY, married a George Washington Hopkins in 1822, but G W was the son of Elijah Hopkins. Robert (4) Looney was the oldest son of John Looney (3) whose will was being contested. Would appreciate information about any connections between the Hopkins, Derryberry, Graham Families and Capt John Looney (3) , who owned the plantation in Warren Co, TN. Thank you. Elizabeth

    3. Searching for a will of John Looney (3), of Robert (2), Robert (1). Tilton recorded the following information. 15 Feb 1819. Warren Co., TN, Deed Book D, p128. John Looney (4) of St Clair Co, AL deeded to Elisha Dodson "the plantation in Warren County, Tennessee, on Barren Fork of Collins River where John Looney, Sr formerly lived". Witnesses were Isaac Martin and Wm Barnes. Does anyone have any information about this plantation or the death of Capt John Looney Sr in Warren Co by 1819? Are there any records in St Clair Co, AL about this transaction or a will of John Looney Sr (3)? Information about this deed is found in Leroy Tilton's Manuscripts, Part II, page 9. Elizabeth

    3. "John and Robert Looney served in American Militia in the Frontier Wars, 1790-1796. on roll of Hugh Beard's Co of Guards at the Treaty of Holston near mouth of the French Broad, May 28-July 11, 1791, as privates." Joyce From my correspondence with Elizabeth Looney for many years, I would identify the John and Robert Looney (above) at the Treaty of Holston as the sons of Capt John Looney and Elizabeth Renfroe. (Capt John Looney, son of Robert 2). They were young men at that time----Robert should have been about 18-19 years, born in Augusta Co, VA c. 1774 (my ggg grandfather). This elusive Robert Looney married Susannah Williams and moved to Cumberland Co, Ky, where he died c. 1820-1821. John Looney moved with his father, Capt John Looney, to Warren Co, TN, then to Maury Co,TN, served as a Sgt. in the War of 1812, then moved to St Clair Co, AL, where he lived with the rest of his family until his death c. 1827. Elizabeth Looney and Tilton believe that Capt John Looney, father of John and Robert in the above record, was the John Looney who signed the Cumberland Pact. Wish we had more records from early Washington Co, TN. The Presbyterian Archives at Montreat could have early church records of East Tn that would give positive identification of these numerous LOONEYS in late 1700 Tennessee. Elizabeth
