I think we would all be thrilled if we can document two things -- 1) The parents of our Robert (1) and Elizabeth. 2) How this John and Elizabeth LLewellyn are related. Like many of you, I've seen Robert's parents listed in several places... some say it was John, others Joseph, and a couple of others say Robert Sr. To date, I know of absolutely no evidence to support any of these speculations. However, at least we have some clues to work on ... hopefully something will turn up. Regards, ///Steve Looney//
I wanted to put a big thank you out to Steve for putting the researcher list together and posting them on his website. When I suggested making this list back in December, the Looney list had more or less gone dead. I guess it is either feast or famine. Since then, we seem to get 5-10 messages a day (sometimes more). I have been busy trying to look up some of the lines that people sent in to see if I have questions or material that may help. But, alas, life seems to get in the way, and it is very slow going. My files are on paper, so it takes me a little longer to do things, but every little bit helps. Once again, thank you Steve, for all your hard work. Laura
Nita: Glad you mentioned that. Ever since I first started doing research I have seen her name listed as Elizabeth on various charts, but never any actual documentation. Maybe some will turn up now. Thanks Karen, I have her listed as Elizabeth as well, but nothing that proves it yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I may find something when I visit IOM. I'll let you know if I do. Carol: Sorry to butt in on ya'lls conversation here, but in reference to your letter below, thought I'd mention that I have seen her name listed as Elizabeth Llewellyn several times, on various peoples notes. Of course, I haven't a clue where that name came from since there doesn't seem to be any legal documentation available for reference. I stress again. . .my info came from personal notes, not legal documentation. Just thought it might give you a name to be aware of in case you run across it anywhere. Steve, The names of John Llewellyn, esq. of Peel and Capt. John Llewhellin make me wonder if they might be connected to our mystery woman ? Llewellyn or Llewellyn ? It would seem most likely that Llewellyn would have been her maiden name rather than a first name. Let me know if you have any other thoughts. since my trip to IOM has been set for the end of April rather than July, I'd like to go armed with as many clues as possible. Usually Bill corresponds and responds to the Looney Bin querries but the following information keeps buzzing around in my head and I will pass it on for what it is worth. Probably 10 years ago, while still in Houston, I found a John Looney that married an Elizabeth Llewellyn in London ca 1635/1650. Unfortunately, at the time I did not note the name of the marriage license book. Thought I would have long since gotten back to checking this out further. Has anyone else checked into these early marriages in England? Nita Fry
This really was a very good link to comprehensive Isle of Man information for anyone who is going there or is just interested in any part of the history. Looney names do appear but require a good deal of searching for (try the surnames pages for starters). Even if it doesn't add to the quest for our particular ancestors it must add flavour to any understanding of where and how they lived before arriving in the colonies. The other Isle of Man link sites Steve points us toward are also treats. Thanks, Bill and Steve, for those. Frank [email protected] wrote: > This from Rootsweb 'Missing Link' Vol 5, No 4....

Looney, a popular druggist of St. Francis, Ark., and one of the most successful in the county, was born in Tennessee in 1853, and on account of poor health in youth received but a limited education, although he has in late years made this up to a great extent by observation and study. At the age of seventeen he came, with his father, mother, and brother, James W. (who died in 1873), to Clay County, Ark., and settled near Chalk Bluff on the 10th day of January, 1870. Here he remained until twenty-two years of age, and February 23, 1875, he married Miss Susan E. Leigh, daughter of J. H. and Susan E. (Long) Leigh. After marriage Mr. Looney remained on the farm in Clay County until March, 1881, when he moved to Dunklin County, Mo., and was there engaged in the dry-goods store of Sheldon & Wright Bros., at Malden. Afterward, in June, 1883, he was employed by J. S. Kochtitzky & Co. to run a steam corn-sheller, and on the 20th of November met with a very serious accident. Having been caught in the main shaft of the machinery, his clothing was wound so tightly about him that it dislocated his left arm at the shoulder. He suffered excruciatingly from this, failed to get a night's rest for forty days, and is now a cripple in that arm. Embarking in the grocery business, in partnership with Mr. John Allen, under the firm title of Allen & Looney, six months later he bought Mr. Allen out and continued the business until April, 1886, when he sold out, and came to St. Francis May 19 of that year, then starting a drug and grocery store. One year later he closed out the groceries and now has the finest drug store in the county. The firm name is W. R. Looney & Co., and they enjoy a profitable, legitimate trade. Mr. Looney has been generally identified with the enterprises of the town and county. He is the owner of about 120 acres of land adjoining his father's place, some four miles from St. Francis, and is paying particular attention to the raising of clover, which he thinks is a successful crop and also renews the land. Mr. and Mrs. Looney became the parents of six children, all of whom died in infancy. He is a Democrat in politics. =======================================================
