Pat, Elizabeth Looney had a nice fat file for Joseph Samuel Looney. Right in the front of this folder she has a Family Sheet showing his birthday as 21 Feb 1843, Muscle Shoals, Ala. He married Mary Elizabeth Justice 13 Dec. 1866 in Lowell, Ark. Joseph died 13 March 1922 and is buried in Good Springs Cemetery, Lowell, Ark. His parents were George Martin Looney and Lucinda Newton. Joseph had eight children by this marriage with only one son, James Frank Looney surviving to marriage age. James Frank Looney married Minnie Evans. The last submitter (there were others) to the above information was furnished by a great granddaughter, Leona V. Viggers, of Des Moines, IA (April, 1976) I hope this little bit of information helps. I'm still plugging away at this family trying to get Elizabeth's information into a GED format so I can figure out who belongs to who. Another rumor that runs in my family is that Jesse and Frank James are cousins of the Looney's. Also Joe Looney was supposed to have run with Jesse and Frank when they were called Cantril (I think that is a wrong spelling). Does anyone have any information on this rumor? Bettye Looney Bowerman
The Elizabeth Looney everyone keeps referring to - do she live in Washington, DC area. I talked with an Elizabeth several years ago and wondered if it is the same one. Bettye Looney Bowerman
Karen, I agree. It was misleading to me, but I know what it means. Granger is just a nickname, and because there is so many Peters, it was just a way of identifying the Peter's. Pitman is the last name of Peter's wife, and to not get confused with his cousin, who was also Peter, he adopted it for a middle name. He signed records Peter P. Luna. This is what I have read during this past year of research. Hope this helps, Margie Looney Flowers
Hi Folks: I'm very curious to know where the information is coming from which names our Peter Luna as Peter Grancer Luna , Peter Grancer II, III etc. I certainly may be in error, but have always understood that "Grancer" and sometimes "Old Grancer" was a nickname for our Peter (3). Peter (2) didn't live long enough to be called "Old" anything. Did Peter (3) also not go by Peter 'Pitman' Luna some? I always took that to mean he didn't have a middle name or he would have used it and kept the name surname Looney? Speculation on my part, of course. Do any of you all know what Grancer means? I'm thinking someone once told me it was "Grandfather" in Spanish, but since I don't speak Spanish, I don't have a clue as to whether that is correct or not. In any case, if Grancer was indeed his middle name, then we should use it as such, but if not, isn't it going to be misleading to others who come along after us? I would appreciate hearing others views regarding this. Karen Luna Ray
My one continuing question on this line is if there is hard information on the Joseph Samuel Looney (son of George b. 1843) and his marriage. Pat Davis Miller
OK guys, I'm back. My monitor was going out and my mail has piled up to almost 200. Guess CompuServe doesn't put up with mail like AOL did. Anyway what have I missed since the 2nd? Hope everyone is well.

Jackie, You didn't mention any dates, but you may tie in with my Marion County, TN Looneys. I've been working on them for a while, and their a difficult bunch. A Peter Looney Anderson (1820 - 1903) went by wagon train to Mo and is buried in Brookline Cemetery in Green Co, MO. He was born in Marion County, TN and his parents were James and Esther "Hetty" Looney Anderson. His mother, Esther was born abt 1800 in TN, probably to Peter Looney of Marion and Bledsoe County, TN. Some of James and Hetty's other children's names were Sara or Polly, William, Alexander "Alec" (my gggrandfather), Jasper, Josiah, and Martha Jane. Do you know if your Eliza Jane ties in with these mentioned? I am searching for descendants of Eliza Jane Looney (b. TN) of Greene Co., MO. I have a lot of info on the ancestors, by way of other researchers. All these families have her firstborn as Helen. This should be James "Hulen" Alexander. I assume it was difficult to read the microfilms. I need to find info on her husband, Reuben Alexander. Can anyone help? Jackie in Branson, MO
Mozark1 will not tell where he is - he is in the "Witness Protection Program". Wild Bill
I am still trying to get this family straight so I hope you've had better luck than I have had. Please don't take this as factual, but in sifting through all the conflicting information from family members and any one with their own information I have this information I am working on now--A Joseph Looney had at least 3 children--Sons--Joseph b.1812-1818-wife is possibly Nancy E. White--Son--George b. 1802-wife probably Lucinda Newton--And son William Harrison-b. 1815. There may also be a daughter Mary or Molly. Any way I still have lots of old letters, unidentified pictures and other notes to go through. I do know there where too many Joseph's, Lucys and Georges. Keep working [email protected]
Jack - - have you looked up the Tilton Manuscripts online? It is a wealth of history. Ginny Ayers Spann VASPANN @aol.com Houston, TX USA Researching: Ayers, Byrom, Green, Fowler, Kyle, Looney & Seabolt
Hi Jack, The meaning of the word "MANX" is "or or pertaining to the Isle of Man (IOM)or the Manx language". It is a Goidelic language that is almost extinct. If you are not familiar w/the IOM ... go to your search area & type in The Isle of Man; or perhaps Manx. There are several ways you can examine this online. The island is a tiny one in the Irish Sea surrounded by England, Ireland & Scotland. Happy Hunting, Ginny
Where is MOzark1.com located?
can someone tell me the meaning of Manx ? can you tell i`m new at this? thank you . john f. loonie

Steve, You sent in some info posted "as found" on the web. Some of that information is my family. Where on the Web did you find it? All the folks at Bethel Cemetery in Appleby, Nacogdoches County, Texas is my family. I know about these people but I wondered who posted the info to the web and if they might be kin. Thanks Bettye Looney Bowerman
Larry & Vandy: I have just begun to work on "Joe". I t looking more & more like he was married twice. I know without a doubt that his first wife was ELIZABETH LENTZ. They were married 23 Juluy 1837 in Lauderdale County, AL by my gg-granfather, David Reasons Looney, J. P. Who were the parents of William Harrison Looney? It is my thinking that Joe & Elizabeths children were: William Carroll b. 1836; Rebecca Looney b. 1837; Mary P Looney 1847 & James M 1854? Isn't "M" an unusual initial for this period of Looneys? Also, I am wondering if George & Joseph were SONS (instead of brothers) of Wm. H.? Whadda think?
