Better late than never, I guess! Robert and Elizabeth Robert, Jr. and Margaret Rhea d/o Matthew Benjamin and Mary Johnson Robert and ? John (b. 1793) and Margaret Hilliard (b. l799) Martha Mary and Jesse Carlton John Looney and Margaret Hilliard lived in Marion County, TN. Their log cabin still stands as do their headstones. Their daughter, went by Mary--I think Mary Looney sounds like a happy name (as opposed to Psycho Looney, if you get the drift). Mary's husband Jesse was 44 at the on set of the Civil War and their were still about 10 children at home so his son, Joshua who was a mere 14, went in his place. At War's end, five of the youngest were gone.... I was assisted greatly by Euline Harris of the Marion County Genealogy Society in finding out about the Looneys and Hilliards there. CJ Giarratano

I talked with Elizabeth Looney a few weeks ago. She is recovering from her latest ailment. She has both a nurse and a physical therapist visiting her daily. She is getting around with the aid of a walker. Said friends were bringing her more food than she can eat. She can't write much, but can read letters. Said she watches a lot of tv. If anyone has any later news would love to hear it. Mary Lee Murray [email protected]

Thank you so much for this information. I have come across many of these names but was not sure of the connection. How was J.H. Austin related? Thanks again [email protected]

There's also the fictionalized-historical account of Ezekiel Proctor & Ned Christie, 2 of the last Cherokee warriors ... the book was Zeke & Ned by Larry McMurtry and Diana Osanna (1997, Pocket Books). In this book, a John Looney rode with Zeke & Ned as part of their Cherokee Militia. ///Steve Looney///

Yes, more than likely that is the same one. Elizabeth has lived in Washington, D.C. for many years and has been involved in tracing the Looney family for a long time. In fact, she communicated with both my Grandmother (1960s) and my mother (1980s). 5 Feb, Dear Karen, Guess it sometimes pays to be a seasoned citizen! The name "grancer" is seen so often in some of my various family searches. It is a name of respect for the grandfather-Grand Sir. Over time and usage, it just evolves into the easiest family name, Grandsir, or Grancer. Phonics was picturesque back then. Best wishes, Anne Rhea Bruce [email protected] wrote: > Hi Folks: > > I'm very curious to know where the information is coming from which names > our Peter Luna as Peter Grancer Luna , Peter Grancer II, III etc. I > certainly may be in error, but have always understood that "Grancer" and > sometimes "Old Grancer" was a nickname for our Peter (3). Bettye Seems like a very long time ago (maybe 2 or 3 years) there was something that my sister copied off the internet for me to read regarding this. The name that comes to mind was "Doc" Looney, that was supposed to have been involved with the James gang. I don't remember what branch of the family he was with, or if I still have a copy of that info or not. Maybe some of the others on the list will know. Don't know about the rumor, but the spelling I've seen is Quantrill (v. Cantrill); my Looney is a Mary Ann(e?) Looney who married an Alexander Hayes Huston in 1895, 1896 or 1897 in Sacramento CA and I have nothing else on her, unfortunately... She was my father's grandmother. Frankly, I'd find it a kick to be related to the James' -- just for the sheer shock value to some fuddy-duddy family members :) Mary Tebbetts
