    1. [LOONEY-L] Australia Connection to name
    2. Dear List, Here is a searchable website that was sent to me via the root discussion list. It contains a database of Birth, deaths and Marriages in Tasmania, Australia and contains 11 Looney names. One of which shows the birth of a James Looney, 1818, born in Ireland. Interesting to look at and may be a lead for someone's family. I do remember seeing an article in the past about convicts being sent to Australia from area's of the Isle of Man, etc. I can try to find the article again, as I remember it too contained Looney names. http://www.tased.edu.au/archives/ Pam Looney

    1. [LOONEY-L] Research
    2. I've been looking around the Web trying to decide where I can get the best information for my money. I could go to the Clayton Library in Houston but it would be so much easier to research from my computer. Before I go out and join some genealogy site and give them all my money (like I had any), what is the best research site to join. Bettye Looney Bowerman

    2. Bettye, I know what you mean about having a month off work to work on my genealogy.....I may just have that soon. My company was just bought out about 3 weeks ago.....I will probably be there at least until years end....I may have plenty of time after that! LOL Ginny

    1. Re: [LOONEY-L] James "Joe" R. Looney???
    2. I think I agree with you Ginny. Larry came up with a James/Joe that was also born in 1836. They had lost track of the father John and son James/Joe. I think I'm going to start with Larry's info and work forward and see if they tie with my 1870 James/Joe. I sure hope I can put some pieces together soon. I need a month vacation from work (what a joke) so I can spend full time on this. Bettye Looney Bowerman

    1. [LOONEY-L] Joseph M. Looney, Tenn>Louisiana
    2. Larry W Johnson
    3. I've combined data from a couple of messages sent earlier to this group by CSLooney. I believe the Joseph Looney noted in the following data to be Joseph McMinn Looney, said to be born 1808 Stanley Valley, Hawkins Co., Tenn., son of Absalom Looney (d. 1858 Sparta, Bienbille Parish, LA) and Nancy Long, grandson to Benjamin Looney and Mary Johnson, great grandson to Robert Looney Jr. and Margaret Rhea. My record shows Joseph M. Looney to be married twice. First marriage to Amanda Hickey with children: Robert W. (b. 1826) John S. (b. 1831) David A. (b. 1833) Hugh C. (b. 1835) Emaline (b. 1837) Amanda (b. 1842) James K. (b. 1846) Second marriage to Delaney Evans with one child: Delaney Evans Looney To complicate (or should I say simplify) this relationship farther, Absalom Looney, father to this Joseph M. Looney, was also married twice. First to Nancy Long and second to Eleanor Wilson. He had children by both wives, one being Robert Johnson Looney (b. 1823) by the second. Absalom and several of these children were known to be in Louisiana. 3. Go to this address: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ussearch.htm Search on Looney for the state of LA. There is one file that will pop up which outlines the history of Desoto Parish and its early establishment. R. J. Looney is identified as an early judge here. With Mary Jane Sample being born 9 Feb. 1852, I figure she wasn't married until at least age 20 which coincides with the date R. J. Looney was there. Joe R. Looney and Mary had John C. Looney who was born there in Feb 1878. Was there a family relationship between R. J. Looney and Joe? Just a long shot, but worth checking into. 1. Re: [LOONEY-L] James "Joe" R. Looney???
    2. Larry, Unfortunately I have very little information on James Looney. I have documented that he was born 1836 in Lauderdale Co., AL He was 14 @ this time. 1840 Pontotoc Co., MS shows James to be w/his father, David Reasons Looney. I know that he has a sister - older - - (abt. 1833) don't know her given name but she marriage someone named _________Grant before 1850 and lived in TN. Although I have not "proven it" Mr. Tilton says that James was a Pharmacist, then called a druggist in Holly Springs, MS and was married to Norvel Hopkins before 1860. The previous information was only the children of his first family. I have much information on his second family. If I can help further, please let me know. Ginny

Looney Jr. m. Missoura E. Simmons 29 Apr 1875 in Cameron Parish. With James (Joe) R. Looney and Mary Jane Sample (b. Feb. 1852 in Desoto Parish) getting married around this time in this same area, I am wondering if there could be a close family relationship. Their son, John C. Looney was born in Desoto Parish in 1878. Larry

    2. Larry, Robert J. Looney Sr & Jr???? I don't remember seeing that name in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana but I laid down the Looney's about 10 years ago so my memory could be senior-ing. Have you got something online that I can look at? The James (Joe) R. Looney and Mary Jane Sample you mention are my g-Grandparents and the John C Looney is their third son. Bettye Looney Bowerman
