We are of the David line through his son David. You can see our line at Steve's (?) site. I think that is where the submitter list was. Laura

    1. [LOONEY-L] IOM questions
    2. Barbara Cathey
    3. I don't know if I am sending this to the proper address. A submission to Looney-L was forwarded to me by my daughter. She sent it because I am going to the Isle of Man in May. Have you received responses to your questions about Ballagilley? I was in the IOM in 1993 and purchased "A History of Kirk Maughold" by W and C Radcliffe. According to land records, Looneys did not own Ballagilley until the generation after Robert. Thomas Looney (1750-1826) purchased part of Ballagilley. His nephew, John Looney, was farming 30 acres of Ballagilley in 1851. Thomas Looney's Parents John Looney and Margaret Kelvin or Kelvie were contemporaries of our Robert. They purchased part of the half quarterland of Crowcreen in 1748. It is near Ballagilley. Looneys prior to this were found on "staff" land in the 17th century and were listed among cottage holders in what is now Ramsey in 1600. John and Margaret were said to have come from Ramsey when they bought their part of Crowcreen. Margaret's family came from Scotland. I feel there is a connection between these early Manx Looneys and our Robert, but there is no documentation. The Ballagilley connection may have come from later generations corresponding with family in the old country or more likely from the visit of M. D. Looney to the Isle of Man in 1927 where he found the Looney homestead, Ballagilley Farm, and assumed that it was owned by Looneys back to the time of Robert's birth. I have heard family traditions that Robert left the IOM because of religious persecution and that an ancestor fought with Marlborough at Flanders. Also a connection to the Derby family that ruled Man for many years (I feel this was most likely from one of our American Looney's habit of saying that something or other made his "Derby blood run cold" which could have been said by a supporter or Derby as well as family). Let me know what else you have found. Barbara Looney Cathey Jacksonville, Fl

    1. [LOONEY-L] Manx Sites (was Intro)
    2. Soheyr Azar
    3. Hi, All: Thank you Steve for your helpful message. I'm sorry to be so long in replying, but have been out of town. I did manage to do some Looney research at the Newberry Library in Chicago. Didn't find much new and nothing new on Robert (1). Message text written by INTERNET:[email protected] >Rather than duplicate what others will send, I would >suggest you pick up of copy of the book >"Most Distinguished Characters On The American Frontier" >by Madge Looney Crane and son Phillip Crane. http://www.robertlooney.com/ >It contains about everything that's been discovered and >documented as "fact" concerning Robert (1) Looney and >wife ELIZABETH. I do plan to buy this book, but don't believe I will receive it before I leave. My e-mail sent to their site was never answered (since the 16th). Wasn't sure I should just send a check off. How do we know that Robert came from Ballagilley on Man? Do we have any other Manx sites we know of to check out? I thought I might search for some of the sites mentioned in the William Cubban notes. I found Ballagilley on a Manx map, but haven't found the other sites yet. Has anyone visited any of the other sites? I have been to Kirk Maughold and plan to return there and well as going to Kirk Lonan. I also plan to go to the Manx Museum (again) and there is a genealogical collection in Peel. > (That's the first hit you'll probably >get notes about. The 2nd is likely to be about >Robert's parents. To date, no one has discovered any >documentation that gives their names. If you've found anything, >please let us know). The LDS site has John Looney and Elizabeth Llewellyn but no documentation. As I said before they have this John born in Augusta Co. VA *before* Jamestown was settled, so definitely not documented. They have Robert's wife as Elizabeth Stover (Barabar)--again no documentation. So who is Robert's real wife? Or do we know her last name? >My wife and I are also planning an IOM journey ... probably around 01 July to coinicide with the week-long Tynwald festival. I will be glad to share with you, and anyone else, whatever I might find--if it is only more pictures. Teresa McVeigh, married to Stephen W. Looney

    1. [LOONEY-L] LOONEY guru
    2. Is there a looney guru? Someone who is the Keeper of Looney information? I have been going through my Looney (and variations thereof) information and would like to send it out -- is it just as easy to do it as a LOONEY-L "broadcast" e-mail or is there someone who may have a fairly complete database? Thank you~! Mary Dee -- presumably descended from George A. Looney who was for several years in Elyria OH -- from late 1860's to about 1872... based on family information-- which is a bit "off" date-wise ;(

    3. Dear Ginny, You have got to be kidding me?! OK I will tell you what I know about them so far and maybe you can help me from there. From what I have been told Robert Looney (David Reasons father) had 14 brothers and Sister. Now my side of the Looney family came from one of those brothers. Do you have any information on any of them? Do you possibly know how Abraham and Elizabeth fit into this? I would love to see what you have! Lisa

    3. Lisa, Hello from another cousin. David Reasons Looney's father was Robert and his mother was Rebecca (KYLES?). Robert's siblings were David (Jr.)(who married Jane Spurgeon), Joseph (who married Lavinia Earnest), Abraham (who married Elizabeth Gammon), Elizabeth (who married John Vaughn), Sarah (married Samuel Gregg), Jane (married Samuel Carruthers), Mary (married Jeremiah Taylor), and Annis (married Hugh Crawford). The parents of these siblings were David and Mary Ann (McClellan) Looney and the parents of David were Robert and Elizabeth Looney. I hope that this helps. Let me know what you have on your line, and I will try to tie you in. Or Ginny or someone else may be able to. Just go back as far as you can and show us that. I am from the David (Jr) line. Laura
