Nivard, Having followed various exchanges on Dutch genealogy groups on the topic of genealogy mailing lists it is my understanding that the service of groups.io is not free of charge, which may be an issue when choosing an alternative for other similar services that have so far been free of charge. As for Yahoo's decision, messages only IMHO suffice for genealogy in so far as that I can't think of any other functionality that I need for that. As for Rootsweb's decision, who is to say that alternatives such as Facebook or Twitter are going to exist forever? A reduction of services or a usage fee for some or all social media or even the end of one or more platforms maybe unthinkable now, but who knows what the future brings (see e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyves). On at least on occasion I've suggested that in the Netherlands the Central Bureau for Family history, the National Archive or some other similar government institute with an affinity to genealogy would provide a basic service free of charge using a free of charge product like https://www.list.org/. Those who have more advanced needs, such as exchange images and who don't mind the hassle of having to log onto to dozens of forums, social media platforms and what not, then can do so at their leisure, leaving users with less intricate needs with the choice to use one or more email lists, such as this one.
