    3. Good Morning Listers and Greetings from Queensland Australia, I have a page from the Register of Deaths in the Stepney Union, Bromley Workhouse. Listed on the page is my GG Grandfather Thomas Hawkins. He passed away according to the entry on 17 May 1900. He was taken to Ilford for burial. Try as I may, I can find no Civil Registration of his death. Others on the page are registered in Poplar, not him. I am at a loss as to why this would be. Can anyone please throw some light on this? Kind regards Martin Hawkins

    3. Hi Martin I checked for any 80 year olds registered in the year for Poplar, nothing found remotely like Thomas or HAWKINS (in case it might be registered under the wrong spelling) Nor in Romford which covered Ilford (just in case) The responsibility for registering the death was with the workhouse master, so it looks as if he didn't do that It seems a little belated but it was quite a few years later that they introduced the necessity to produce a certificate of registration before burial or cremation could take place and a disposal certificate was required to be returned to the registrar Have you checked in Ilford for the burial? Just in case there might be a note in the margin Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 02/03/2015 00:13, Martin Hawkins via wrote: > Good Morning Listers and Greetings from Queensland Australia, > > I have a page from the Register of Deaths in the Stepney Union, Bromley > Workhouse.
