I am trying to find a birth record for John GALLEY (or GALLY/GALLI), son of Silvester John (James) GALLY and Mary Ann HARE (or Ayres), who was born about July, 1868 in either Whitechapel or Mile End. I ordered a certified copy of an entry of birth from the GRO, but they can't find any record of the birth. The 1871 census for Tower Hamlets shows a John GALLY, age 29 (which I'm sure is 2 years, 9 months) living at 1 Roberts Place, and the place of birth is Mile End. The 1881 census for Tower Hamlets shows a John GULLEY, age 13 living at 3 Roberts Place, and the place of birth is Whitechapel. The 1891 census for Leytonstone, Essex shows a John GALLEY age 22 living at 14 Burgess Rd., Leyton, Essex and the place of birth is Commercial Rd., London The 1901 census for Leytonstone, Essex shows a John GALLERY age 32 living at 71 Southwell Grove Rd., Leyton and the place of birth is Whitechapel. The 1911 census for Leytonstone, Essex shows a John GALLEY age 43 living at 8 Southwell Grove Rd., Leytonstone and the place of birth is Whitechapel. I believe that part of Commercial Rd lies in Whitechapel, so it would appear that 4 of the 5 census show John as being born @ Whitechapel. Can anyone help? Dennis Galley, Port Elgin, Ontario, Canada

Dennis, I am sure we have corresponded before over the Galley/Gally/Galli surname as fellow Italian researchers! A quick search of FreeBMD http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ reveals two births in the Registration district of Mile End John Galley September Quarter 1863 John Henry Galley March Quater 1868 The obvious choice for London Italians is St Peter's in Clerkenwell which was formed in 1863. The Anglo Italian FHS have been transcribing the records & it might be worth asking the AIFHS.
