Mike, Baptism records for Wapping show Charles Henry Selvey, son of Joseph and Mary baptised 9 July 1823 at St John of Wapping (birth date given as 25 May 1823). Joseph's occupation is given as mariner. There is a marriage of a Joseph Silvey, of full age, widower, mariner (his father listed as John Silvey, deceased, shoemaker) to Elizabeth Drake, of full age, widow, laundress (father James Higgins, deceased labourer) at St Leonard, Shoreditch on 2 November 1857. (indexed on ancestry as Elizabeth _Drakel_ and Joseph Silvy) It is interesting that there is a marriage at St Leonard Shoreditch between a Joseph Silva, of the Liberty of Norton Folgate, bachelor and Mary Higgins of the same liberty, spinster, a minor (married by banns and with the consent of her parents) on 13 November 1817. (his name clearly Silva on the parish record) However, this does not prove that the Joseph Silvey/Silvy/Silva in each case is the same person, although it seems likely. Marriages pre civil registration do not generally list occupations, ages or names of the father of the consenting parties.
