Thank you David and Jill, I'm thinking along similar lines as you are and came up with Christian Men's Brigade. It has to be something along these lines. He was listed as an evangelist in one census and Head of Barnados Mission Church in another although in the latter case the census people over-wrote it with "Preacher". FWIW, I thought of the Church Lads Brigade and wondered if there was an equivalent adult organisation: Church Men's Brigade. Haven't found any evidence though.
