Hi List, My grandmother Jessie Sarah WILSON (nee SMITH) died in 1916 in Poplar leaving a bunch of abandoned children some of whom, I recently discovered, finished up at the Poplars Schools at Brentwood in Essex which I understand was an sponsored orphanage. I’ve found a general website for the schools but I’m having difficulty finding any records of admissions or discharges. Does A.K.S. have any information about this institution around 1916 and more importantly can anybody point me in the right direction to verifying which of the children might actually have been admitted. Kind regards Brian Wilson – Adelaide South Australia ======= Email scanned by PC Tools - No viruses or spyware found. Brian, >From what you say I'm not entirely sure which institution the children attended, but it may have been the Poplar Training School at Hutton, Brentwood. This was not a sponsored orphanage as such, but a poor law institution run by the Poplar Board of Guardians. Information and pictures are here. http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Poplar/#Post-1834 (halfway down the page) The A&D records are at London Metropolitan Archives, which has a research service. www.lma.gov.uk The records of this institution are not included in Ancestry's online collection of London poor law records, as far as I can see.
