    3. >From time to time we have 'quiet times', on the list, and it's always nice when someone has a particularly difficult 'brick wall' that we can help knock down. I thought, maybe, in this quiet period, we might be able to do that now, knock down a few of those walls. We have some great people on the list, full of knowledge, and they have been willing helpers so many times. Do you have a 'brick wall'. Something about someone you have wanted to find, but haven't' , and it drives you mad, not knowing? If so, let us hear about it! Please remember to keep it London and surrounds focused and mark your posting 'Brick Wall-Surname', replacing 'Surname' with your own particular name. I am fighting with tremendous amounts of spam to the admin address right now, so it would be particularly nice to see some interesting postings. Don't be shy, let us try and help :) Regards Lin List Admin London

    3. In response to Lin's reference to High brick walls I am posting my research details concerning George Hallett born around 1865 in the hope that someone can point me in the right direction as to where to look next. George Hallett married Maria Bradley in St James’ Church Edmonton Middlesex on 10th February 1889. At that time, George was shown as a batchelor aged 24 and his occupation was shown as a butcher. His father, also named George, was deceased but his occupation was shown as a miller. Both bride and groom are shown as living in Trafalgar Place. On the 1891 census George and Maria are living in Dorset Terrace in Peckham, together with their eldest child George who was born in 1889. George’s occupation is still shown as a butcher , but unfortunately the family’s place of birth is just shown simply as England. George and Maria had 3 children. I cannot find a baptism for their eldest child George who was born around 1889/1890 but I have found the birth record on freeBMD, Wandsworth vol 1d pg 535. Their second son Henry (baptised as Harry) was baptised 12 October 1892 in Christ Church, Camberwell. At that time, George’s occupation was listed as Horse keeper and the family are living at 4 Upper Hall. Their third son William was baptised 24 September 1894 in St Peter’s Church, Walworth. This time George’s occupation is listed as Carman and the family are living in Trafalgar Street. By 1901 George and Maria have separated and Maria is now living with William Weekes. I can follow Maria and the three children both through marriages and through the 1911 census, but I cannot track down George Hallett. Through family connections I know that George stayed in the same area and actually had a second family. However it is not known if he actually remarried or whether he simply moved in with someone else and they lived as man and wife. I cannot find George before his marriage living with a father George who was a miller . Nor can I find George after his split with his wife Maria. Not having a specific place of birth just adds to the problem. I am aware that there are Hallett families in Somerset but none seem to fit in with the family I am looking for. Any suggestions would be most gratefully received. 1. [LON] Brick Wall - DANIEL

    3. Hi Listers, My great-grandfather, Francis (Frank) DANIEL, has baffled my family for about 100 years. My grandmother tried and failed to find out about her father, my father tried and failed, so now the job has fallen to me, and I've been trying for about 15 years now. Frank DANIEL, hammerman, appears on the 1881 census as J. Daniel, living in Greenwich, and giving his birth place as Woolverhampton [sic]. Also there are my great-grandmother, Louisa nee MASTERS, my grandmother (also Louisa) and a sister no-one knew about, Susan. My grandmother's 1876 birth certificate does not give a father's name but Susan's names Francis as her father and implies he and my great-grandmother were married. No marriage has ever been found. To cut a long story short, Frank was supposed to have died accidentally when my grandmother was "about 2", ie before Susan was born in 1880. Frank does not appear in the death indexes for that period or at any other time, or the marriage indexes, nor are there any more records of Susan. She was of course his property being named as the father, whereas my grandmother did not being illegitimate. So far I have tracked Frank on the censuses 1841-1881 and it seems fairly certain he was the son of Joseph and Agnes DANIEL of Stone, Staffs, born 1836. I have also found his marriage to Susannah APPLEGARTH in 1863 in Southwark. I cannot find Susannah and her children after 1871. My logic tells me that putting Frank's "death" around 1878 and making no mention of Susan means that my great-grandmother never expected to hear from them again. She married James PRINGLE in 1884 calling herself a widow. Question: where did they go? I suspect they emigrated but the Empire was a huge place. They were not with Frank's brothers in 1891 or 1901. Any leads on Frank and/or Susan would have me leaping with joy. Well, you did ask, Lin! Lesley

    3. Hi Lesley Have you looked in Barbados in the Bahamas for your Daniel family. the only reason I know of the Daniel family there is because a member of my local Family History Society has family who has lived there for generations. If you go to the new familysearch site and scroll down to the left and click on south americ, then scroll again for Bahamas, yu can put Daniel in and up comes hundreds. You may find your missing link there. 3. Thanks for that, Edie. I think I looked at that a while back but nothing rang any bells although I will bear it in mind for the future.
